The Incredible Wisdom of George Washington in Dealing with All manner of Situations

Contents

    [1] The Wisdom of Washington Deals with a Friend and Neighbor who seems to betray the American cause;

    [2] The Wisdom of Washington Deals with a great American General who is Defeated: General Lincoln, and the Surrender of the British at York Town;

    [3] The Wisdom of Washington Deals with a great English General - Cornwallis - with whom they are engaged in mortal conflict at Yorktown;

    [1] "Washington's Wisdom"

    In Reaching an Obstinate Friend:

    NEW PROVIDENCE UNDERSTANDING BY WASHINGTON:
    In this long letter, Washington Explains Providence, how it relates to human opposed thinking, and how God still carries out through us, that which is against our will.

      [BACKGROUND NOTE: Washington's elderly friend, Bryan Fairfax had just returned to Virginia after attempting to flee to England to live because his political views were so far out of accord with Washington, the American Cause, his Virginia friends and neighbors.

      He had to appeal to Continental Army headquarters to obtain - permission to leave the country and get a Passport from General Washington, to then go to New York and appeal to the British Commander to gain permission to LEAVE the USA and go to England to be with those with whom he agreed and wanted to win this War.

      General Washington graciously granted the old man permission to leave and a U.S. Passport to go with it.

      Please note that General Washington could have easily STOPPED Bryan Fairfax from leaving his country (and his family) and fleeing to England - where he would obviously speak against the American Cause - by a simple nod of Washington's head to a secretary . . . but he didn't:

      Washington granted his angry, old friend a passport to flee to England."

      However, after Mr. Fairfax left his Virginia family and arrived in New York with his American Passport to seek approval from the British Commander to seek refuge in England, he found that the British required him to take certain loyalty oaths to the King, Church of England, renouncing America and all Americans, etc., before allowing him to go to England.

      Mr. Fairfax - though stubbornly wrong and dogmatic to the extreme, was an honest man, and his conscience would not permit him to subscribe to such restrictions in taking the oaths.

      So he returned to Virginia in defeat: fearful of scoffing, rebuke, scorn and perhaps serious persecution. He was bitter, angry, confused, hostile to all, defensive and determined to stand his ground no matter what it cost him.

      Mr. Fairfax was AGAINST the American position, AGAINST his neighbors, AGAINST his family, and especially AGAINST Washington's oft-repeated position that God was on the side of the Patriots and would MAKE them prevail in their just cause.

      Isolated back in Virginia near Washington's own Mt. Vernon, like a scorpion poised to sting, Bryan Fairfax remained throughout the war. His neighbors left him alone and respected the old man for his independence and his long life as a good man.

      George Washington - as busy and pressured as can be imagined - wrote the old man and neighbor a brief kindly letter.

      Mr. Fairfax, when receiving Washington's Letter, was apparently expecting a harsh rebuke from the young General, and a nasty diatribe against an "Old Fool!" as the cliche goes:

        "There's no fool like an OLD FOOL!"

      Thus when he opened the letter and found kind words, respect, genuine care, continued friendship, support for his right to his conscience and opinion, and an offer to assist, if needed in some way . . .

      . . . the angry old man was stunned to say the least, and deeply touched by Washington's kindness and gesture, . . .

      . . . in fact, he declares it the singular most touching incident of his life!

      Thus the hurting old man wrote to the young General as follows:

    Reply of Bryan Fairfax to General George Washington,After his return to Virginia: Letter dated Dec. 8, 1777].

      "There are Times when Favours conferred make a greater Impression than at others; for, tho' I have received many, and hope I have not been unmindful of them,

      yet that, at a Time when your Popularity was at the highest and mine at the lowest,

      and when it is so common for Men's Resentments to run high agst (against) those that differ from them in Opinion,

      that You should act with your wonted Kindness towards me, hath affected me more than any Favour I have received;

      and could not be believed by some in N: York, . . .

      . . . it being above the Run of common Minds."

      [SOURCE: Bryan Fairfax's letter dated Dec. 8, 1777, is in the Washington Papers].

    END OF BACKGROUND:

    Washington's Reply to Bryan Fairfax:

      "The Sentiments you have expressed of me in this Letter are highly flattering — meriting my warmest acknowledgements, as I have too good an opinion of your sincerity and candour, . . .

      . . . . to believe that you are (even) capable of unmeaning professions - & speaking a language foreign from your heart —

      WASHINGTON REAFFIRMS FRIENDSHIP:
      The friendship I ever professed, & felt for you, met with no diminution from the difference in our political sentiments

      I knew the rectitude of my own intentions & believing in the sincerity of yours,

        >> lamented,

        >> though I did not condemn,

        >> your renunciation of the creed I had adopted —

      [N]nor do I think any person, or power ought to do it whilst your conduct is not opposed to the general Interest of the People, & the measures they are pursuing—

    WASHINGTON ON PROVIDENCE:
    [NOTE: Washington writes on Providence in the absolute tense 99.9% of the time, but on this occasion uses the word 'may' instead of 'must'.

    Why?

    Did he have a moment of doubt? Not at all!

    Washington was trying to convince a neighbor, a friend, a wealthy Englishman who was so strongly against the American Cause, that he tried his best to move to England for the duration, even thought it meant leaving his wife and extended family!

    He was Washington's Elder: well-known, a man of previous power and position, proud, stubborn, and rich for decades; . . .

    . . . now criticized by many, and yet still stubbornly believing the opposite of Washington in all things.

    Nursing his deep wounds from seemingly proved to fail in open public discourse . . . the last thing he needs is for young Washington to say: I told you so.

    So Washington approaches him with a whole new worldview, and uses the word 'may' regarding the Providence that directs all of us in all things.

    The brilliant, wise and diplomatic Washington, even uses the Doctrine of Providence to comfort Mr. Fairfax, and provide him a sound reason to have not been accepted into England;

    Washington telling him that GOD WAS IN IT for his good and his family!

    Washington begins by explaining Providence, how it relates to human thinking when such thinking is opposed to God's Plan, and how God's Providence still carries out His Divine Design through us, even when that is against our will.

    We repeat a thought by Washington to get back into the flow of his letter:

      WASHINGTON CONTINUES: "The friendship I ever professed, & felt for you, met with no diminution from the difference in our political sentiments

      I knew the rectitude of my own intentions & believing in the sincerity of yours,

        >> lamented,

        >> though I did not condemn,

        >> your renunciation of the creed I had adopted —

      [N]nor do I think any person, or power, ought to do it whilst your conduct is not opposed to the general Interest of the People, & the measures they are pursuing—

      The latter, that is our actions, depending on ourselves may be controuled, while the powers of thinking originating from higher causes, cannot always be moulded to our wishes.

      The determinations of Providence are always wise — often inscrutable (not fully understood) —

      - and, tho’ its decrees appear to bear hard upon us at times, is, nevertheless meant for gracious purposes —

      WASHINGTON COMFORTS HIM:
      In this light I cannot help viewing your late disappointment; for if you had been permitted to have gone to England, unrestrained even by the rigid Oaths which are administered upon those occasions' -

      - your feelings as a husband, parent, &ca (etc.,) must have been considerable (and) would in the prospect of a long — perhaps lasting separation (to possibly never to see his wife, children, grandchildren again) from your nearest relatives —

      - what then must they have been if the obligation of an Oath had left you without a Will? (choice or power to change the situation, once in England)

The Incredible Wisdom of George Washington in Dealing with All manner of Situations

[2] "Washington's Wisdom"

When A Faithful General is Defeated:

One of General Washington's best and most faithful under-generals was General Lincoln.

In April 1777 he was defeated at the Battle of Bound Brook by a much larger force under the command of Lord Cornwallis.

In September 1777, Lincoln joined Horatio Gates's camp near Saratoga to take part in the great victorious Battles of Saratoga. Lincoln and forces won, but he was permanently injured.

His ankle was shattered by a musket ball during the Second Battle of Saratoga, permanently leaving him with one leg shorter than the other, causing pain in every step.Later he was put in charge of the "Southern Theatre", where he met with disaster.

Sadly, General Lincoln got trapped by the British forces at Chraleston South Carolina, and General Lincoln suffered a horrible and embarrassing defeat.

The city was surrounded by a sizable British force dispatched from the northern colonies. After a relatively brief siege Lincoln was forced to surrender to Lieutenant General Henry Clinton on May 12, 1780.

Lincoln, desperate for more troops, had pleaded with the South Carolina legislature to arm 1,000 enslaved African Americans to ward off the approaching British.

Rather than see armed slaves, the S.C. legislature began negotiations with the British commanders to allow the British forces to pass through South Carolina.

[The British subsequently sought to enlist large numbers of black soldiers].

Rather than have his greatly outnumbered men get slaughtered like sheep, Lincoln surrendered. This was one of the worst Continental defeats of the war.

British Clinton was so arrogant, that he denied Lincoln any honors of war in surrendering, which deeply offended General; Lincoln.

At the time, Lincoln was taken capture and held by the British, after a most humiliating public ceremony as follows, dictated by British Officer Clinton:

His articles of Surrender provided as follows:

    >> the troops were to surrender themselves prisoners of war,

    >> the troops were to remain prisoners to the United States;

    >> Officers were to retain their side arms and private papers and property.

    >> General Lincoln was to be denied honors of War, and was to go on parole to his Commander, George Washington (and could have been court martialed, but all his men knew him to be a tremendous patriot and leader, and in the court of inquiry no charges were ever brought against him).

    >> At noon on the day of surrender, the troops of Charleston were to be delivered;

    >> The surrender of Lincoln's army was provided for in the following terms:

      ** The garrison of Charleston will march out to a place to be appointed in front of the posts, at two o'clock precisely,

      ** With shouldered arms, colours cased, and drums beating a British march.

      ** They are then to ground their arms,

      ** And return to their encampments, where they will remain until they are dispatched to the places of their destination as prisoners of war.

      ** The garrison will march out at three o'clock in the afternoon;

      ** The Cavalry with their swords drawn, trumpets sounding, and the infantry in the manner prescribed for the garrison of Charleston;

      ** They are likewise to return to their encampments until they can be finally marched off as prisoners;

    >> Then General Lincoln was to surrender his sword to Officer Clinton, then be taken into custody as a Prisoner of war.

All of Charleston South Carolina looked on.

LINCOLN REJOINS WASHINGTON:

Later Lincoln was exchanged for the British Major General William Phillips in November 1780, Lincoln returned to Washington's main army, led it south to Virginia and played a major role in the Yorktown surrender on October 19, 1781.

Here is the great WISDOM of GENERAL WASHINGTON:

Washington hurt so bad for his dedicated General Lincoln, that he was determined to do all he could to lift General Lincoln back to the elevated status in American History he deserved!

When Washington and Lincoln defeated Lord Cornwallis - who had defeated Lincoln in his first battle years ago, General Washington did as follows:

Washington made the requirements of Lord Cornwallis' surrender EXACTLY as Officer Clinton had mad required of General Lincoln:

      [Skim through the requirements again, and get to the SURPRISE PUNCH LINE!}.

      >> the troops, seamen, and marines were to surrender themselves prisoners of war,

      >> "the land troops to remain prisoners to the United States;

      >> the (British) navy to the (French) naval army of his Most Christian Majesty."

      >> Officers were to retain their side arms and private papers and property.

      >> The soldiers were to be kept in Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania.

      >> General Cornwallis and certain other officers were to be permitted to go on parole to New York or to Europe.

      >> The sloop of war Bonetta was to be left at the disposal of the British commander to carry dispatches to Sir Henry Clinton, and on her return she was to be turned over to the Count de Grasse.

      >> At noon on the 19th two redoubts on the left flank of Yorktown were to be delivered, one to a detachment of American infantry, the other to a detachment of French grenadiers.

      >> The surrender of the army was provided for in the following terms:

        ** The garrison of York will march out to a place to be appointed in front of the posts, at two o'clock precisely,

        ** with shouldered arms, colours cased, and drums beating a British or German march.

        ** They are then to ground their arms,

        ** and return to their encampments, where they will remain until they are dispatched to the places of their destination.

        ** Two works on the Gloucester side will be delivered at one o'clock to a detachment of French and American troops appointed to possess them.

        ** The garrison will march out at three o'clock in the afternoon;

        ** the cavalry with their swords drawn, trumpets sounding, and the infantry in the manner prescribed for the garrison of York.

        ** They are likewise to return to their encampments until they can be finally marched off.

    THE SURRENDER OF CORNWALLIS'S ARMY AT YORKTOWN

    PLANS CARRIED OUT:

      In the afternoon of the 19th of October, 1781, the allied armies were formed in lines about a mile long on opposite sides of the road leading to Hampton.

      The Americans were on the right of the formation, facing west, with the right of their line resting on the second parallel.

      The French were on the left of the formation, facing east, their left resting on the second parallel.

      Washington and Rochambeau, with their staffs, were in front of the flanks of their respective lines, in the vicinity of this parallel.

      The British troops marched out through the horn work about 2 o'clock.

      Lord Cornwallis, being too much distressed mentally and physically to engage in the ceremony, . . .

      . . . sent his sword by General O'Hara, second in command.

    WASHINGTON'S AMAZING LAST BLOW:

      When O'Hara reached the flank of the allied armies he asked the French aide who accompanied him where General Rochambeau was. The French commander being pointed out, O'Hara approached him and offered the sword.

      General Rochambeau informed the British general that the person to receive the surrender was General Washington.

      General O'Hara then approached General Washington and offered Lord Cornwallis's sword in surrender.

      WASHINGTON DECREES CORNWALLIS MUST SURRENDER TO GENERAL LINCOLN!:

      Washington told Officer O'hara that General Lincoln would receive the surrender.

      General O'Hara then handed the sword of Lord Cornwallis to General Lincoln.

      The British troops marched down the Hampton Road between the two lines of victors, and just before reaching the road to Warwick passed into a field bordered by the two roads and laid down their arms.

      General Washington and General Lincoln when home in victory. The soldiers cheered! Lincoln could not believe Washington would go to such lengths to RESTORE HIS HONOR AND DIGNITY!

      WASHINGTON In His WISDOM Wasn't Done Honoring LINCOLN!

      With the score settle between Major General Lincoln and Cornwallis, and General Lincoln and the British, Washington then had a last surprise.

      He was instrumental in getting Major General Benjamin Lincoln appointed as the First Secretary of War of the United States of America, a position he held until the end of the Revolutionary War!

      From 1781 to late 1783, Lincoln served as the first "Secretary of War," also called the "Secretary at War" - under the Articles of Confederation.

      AMAZINGLY!

      From then on for two years, whenever Washington wrote or spoke to Benjamin Lincoln as the Secretary of War, he ALWAYS:

        >> Addressed him as Honorable Secretary at War;

        >> Dear Sir:

        >> Signed off as "Your most obedient Servant"

      To see a letter, see FOOTNOTE [1] (Note the wisdom in the letter on

      If this is not the ultimate in class, then this author is incapable of recognizing such!

      Thus the slogan for centuries was formulated of Washington:

        >> FIRST in WAR!

        >> FIRST is PEACE!

        >> FIRST in the HEARTS of His COUNTRYMEN!

      And so it was: by the WISDOM of WASHINGTON! FOOTNOTE [1]

        TRANSCRIPT GLC 2437.52.134

        George Washington. Letter copy: Head Quarters, to General Benjamin Lincoln, 1783 June 6. 2 p. + doc.

        Washington to Hon. Sec. at War

        Head Quarters

        6 June 1783.

        Dear Sir,

        Having attentively perused the letter from Major Genl Knox to you, respecting extra allowances to him, which you committed to my consideration, I can with great truth and justice say, that the requests made by Gen Knox appear to me to be perfectly reasonable and well founded.

        In the first instance, the duties of his command from the time of his first entering the Service have been arduous and important – and if it was necessary to make the Observation to you I could add, they have been executed with the greatest attention, ability and satisfaction, as well as with great prudence and oeconomy for the public.

        If therefore Congress should be pleased to give him the allowances for the time mentioned, for his extra Services as Master of the Ordnance, I think it would be no more than what justice demands for his particular merits, and will involve no disagreeable Consequences.

        ...General Knox’s situation has been very peculiar for the time he has commanded at West Point; particulary last year, while the French Army was in the Neighborhood, Curiosity led many of their most respectable officers to visit that post, which circumstance alone led him, for the honor of our Country as well as his own, into many unavoidable [2] expences, beyond what any other Situation would have subjected him to.

        Independent of this particular reason, West Point, being a post of great importance and much famed for the peculiarity of its Situation and Strength, is at all time subject to much company, many of whom are so respectable as to claim the attention of the Commandant.

        In this view, exclusive of his particular merits at that post, I think the request of General Knox is extremely reasonable and just.

        And if Congress should be pleased to grant him some extra allowance therefor, it would be exceedingly grateful to me and perfectly conformable to my Wishes.

        With great regard,

        I am, dear Sir,

        Your most obedient Servant

        (signed) Go: Washington

        Hon. Secretary at War
