George Washington:

The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived?'

Greatest Christian Outside the Biblical Heroes?

George Washington - from his earliest days - studied, understood, believed, and instructed others in Divine Providence, more than any other human being who ever lived, including Christ, Apostle Paul, Moses and David!

George Washington on Providence: His Foundation

What did George Washington mean by his constant, life-long speaking of 'Providence'?

The answer is simple, and utterly amazing to the point of disbelief, for all modern historians, military men, presidents, politicians, secularist-atheist-agnostics, scientists, etc., all who discount the supernatural in favor of the seen-rational-humanistic:

    [1] "A Superintending Providence is ordering every thing for the best and that, in due time, all will end well." That it may do so, and soon, is the most fervent wish of…

    [SOURCE: George Washington to old friend Landon Carter, 10/27/1777, The Writings of George Washington, 9:453-454)].

A decade later his faith in Divine Superintending Providence working all things after the counsel of His Own Will had not wavered!

    [2] "But I trust in that 'Providence, Which Has Saved Us', in six troubles yea in seven, (SCRIPTURE)to rescue us again from any imminent, though unseen, dangers.

    Nothing, however, on our part ought to be left undone."

    [SOURCE: George Washington Letter to Benjamin Lincoln, August 28, 1788].

Washington looked neither to his wisdom and wiles of his Military Leadership for victory, nor the superior force of American Soldiers, neither the assistance of the French Forces, nor the 'luck of the dice'!

Rather, General Washington's FIRM faith and resolution was that HEAVEN would bless his brave men as they fought and by Heaven Blessing ONLY, could the country be saved!

    [3] "...every man with Firmness and Resolution, in time of action,...ever remembering that 'Upon The Blessing of Heaven, and The Bravery of the Men, our Country Only Can be Saved'..."

    [SOURCE: George Washington, General Orders, 9/3/1776, The Writings of George Washington, 6:9)].

Thus General Washington RELIED upon, and trusted, with a FIRM RESOLUTION as stated above (and hundreds of other quotes!) that the Great Providence from the God of Heaven, was the PRINCIPAL THING!

    [4] "...'Providence Has Heretofore Saved Us in a Remarkable Manner', and 'on This We Must Principally Rely'..."

    [SOURCE: George Washington to his step-son, John Parke Custis, 1/22/1777, The Writings of George Washington, 7:53)].

Read and BE AMAZED, at the great faith, and most incredible understanding George Washington had of God's Will prevailing in all things, without fail!

    [5] "We MUST, however, place a confidence in 'That Providence Who Rules Great Events',

    trusting that "Out of Confusion HE Will Produce Order', and, notwithstanding the dark clouds, which may threaten at present, that right will ultimately be established."

    [SOURCE: George Washington - Letter to the Marquis de Lafayette, July 28, 1791].

    [NOTE: This great quote seems based on the Works Of Jonathan Edwards - contemporary of Washington (a generation older), President of Princeton University, and one of the Reformed Theologians of all times, and perhaps having the greatest long-term influence on the USA:

      Jonathan's Edwards's biographer George Marsden notes that "the Edwards' family produced scores of clergymen, a Vice President, many politicians and judges, thirteen presidents of higher institution of learning, sixty-five college professors, and many other persons of notable achievements."

      [SOURCE: George Marsden, Jonathan Edwards: A Life (New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 2003), pg. 500–501]

    Edwards was one of the all-time great theologians on Providence who wrote:

      "And how glorious doth the wisdom of God appear in that long course and series of great changes in the world, in bringing such order out of confusion,. . . [SOURCE: Jonathan Edwards, A Most Brilliant USA Intellect on PROVIDENCE; ].

What Is Providence?

    You must comprehend first of all, what The Holy Bible; and from the great Augustine to Martin Luther, John Knox, John Calvin and John Harvard (Harvard founder), Matthew Henry, Adam Clarke, Charles Spurgeon, etc. -

    - with Washington's contemporaries of Jonathan Edwards, Johnathan Witherspoon, George Whitefield - and many others - that:

      [I] "Providence" is God and His Will;

      [II] "Providence" is not "luck", not an "impersonal force", not an "inanimate substance, not a "what", not a "nebulous power", not a "thing", and - not an "unknown entity".

      [III] Providence is a "WHO" - an advanced and higher understanding of God, the most complex and deepest Doctrine and Theology possible that truly boggles the minds of almost all whoever attempt to explore its unsearchable depths.

    Truthfully - and technically - the word "Providence" alone - could apply to any 'god' a person believed in, . . .

    . . . but Jehovah, Father God, manifest as His Son Jesus Christ: the Lord, the Author of the Christian Religion, the God of Israel - and over 900 more such lofty titles - is the only God George Washington ever mentioned.

      FACT: George Washington never mentioned Buddha or quoted him;

      FACT: George Washington never mentioned Confucius or quoted him;

      FACT: George Washington never mentioned Hindu beliefs or quoted their dogma;

      FACT: George Washington never mentioned Allah or quoted him;

      FACT: George Washington did write on two occasions, that Mohammetans (spelled differently in those days) should be "exterminated!"

      FACT: George Washington never mentioned "Deism" - EXCEPT to "criticize Deism!

What Washington meant by the Theology he used:

[5] Let's use George Washington's quote from above and break it down.

    "We must, however, place a confidence (faith) in:

      [A] That Providence,

      [B] 'Who' rules great events,

      [C] Trusting that out of confusion 'He' will produce order,

      [D] and, notwithstanding the dark clouds, which may threaten at present,

      [E] That 'Right' will ultimately be established."

    [SOURCE: George Washington - Letter to the Marquis de Lafayette, July 28, 1791].

George Washington personally claimed to be a 'Teacher of the Doctrine and Providence of God's Sovereignty', and claimed that he would become "a Preacher of the Doctrine of the Providence of God after the war" . . . when there would be time, after he finished his "present appointment. . . . (Quote and source below)

Apparently, it was not the Providence of God for George Washington to become a Preacher of Providence, but rather, to become a "President of the USA 'BY' Providence" and to 'live Providence in front of an observing world; teaching by "Deeds, not words" (Washington's Motto) what Divine Providence is all about.

FACT: No leader of the Protestant Reformation - neither Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, John Wesley nor Jacobus Arminius wrote more about Providence than George Washington;

FACT: No one who ever lived, wrote more about Providence than George Washington; not Moses, not Apostle Paul, not Augustine, not even Jesus Himself!

FACT: No one who ever lived (a) spoke of it more constantly, (b) lived it more consistently, (c) and wrote of it more affirmingly - or lived it better, longer, or on a larger stage than George Washington.

George Washington was a profound scholar, a deep thinker, an excellent theologian - not of Greek and Hebrew, but of understanding how the Doctrine of Providence was carried out in real life, in business, in War, in life and death, in politics, in government and nation building.

Outside the Bible, George Washington is the greatest man who ever lived, and there are really none to compare to him, apart from that which commendeth martyrs and their sacrifice. Where Lincoln, Jefferson and Franklin all traveled a theological journey - from disbelief and skepticism to one ending in deep faith;

George Washington maintained every decade and every year of every decade of his life, that deep faith with which he started life, taught at his father's knee (George Washington was home schooled, and from extant readings, seems to have had an "Andy-&-Opie-Father-&-Son relationship (From the Angy Griffith Show), that ended suddenly: his aged father died when George was 11.

His understanding of Providence helped him accept his father's death, even at age 11.

    > George Washington wrote a prayer on Christmas day at age 12;

    > George Washington wrote 110 Rules for living at age 15;

    > George Washington was responsible enough top be appointed to public office at age 17;

    > George Washington was responsible enough top be appointed Military Officer commanding men age 23;

George Washington, Apostle of Providence

    George Washington believed that anyone could - or should (even the unregenerate!) - be able to 'see God clearly orchestrating world events, so 'conspicuously', . . .

    . . . "working all things after 'the Counsel of His own will":

      > 'Bringing forth His Purposes in the world'

      > 'Conducting (directing) the affairs of men and nations',

      > 'Ruling Nations as the Supreme Arbiter',

      > 'Ruling the whole universe. . .',

      > Washington declaring that 'it is the Duty of All Nations to obey Him, the Supreme Being, the Creator, The Glorious Redeemer, Our Lord, . . .

      > Washington concluding that whosoever did not observe this Divine Duty was a terrible person!

        [6] George Washington believed in Providence so strongly; he declared harshly, that 'anyone who could not see God clearly orchestrating world events, so conspicuously', clearly is 'worse than an infidel', 'lacks faith', 'is wicked, 'full of ingratitude', and 'will not acknowledge his obligations' . . . to the Hand of Providence.

      [SOURCE: George Washington, Letter to Brigadier General Thomas Nelson, August 20, 1778].

    George Washington wrote and spoke over 2,000 references to Providence in his life, using the exact word 'Providence hundreds of times, with hundreds of corresponding words and statements;

    In addition, George Washington created over 900 titles and names for "God and His Attributes" - extensively using terminology from Scripture - with many of them claiming and/or declaring Providence.

      NOTE! George Washington's 900 Names and Titles for Deity is a literary work equal to Shakespeare's, Augustine's, Noah Webster's Great American Dictionary, Matthew Henry's and Adam Clarke's Commentaries, John Locke on Government, and Adam Smith on Wealth of Nations, etc.,

    This immense and major factor regarding George Washington - the magnum opus of his life, nominates him as perhaps the greatest Theologian, greatest Christian Apostle (Authoritative Leader), and the most-blessed person outside the pages of the Holy Bible!

    Why has George Washington never been known?

George Washington:

The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived?'

Greatest Christian Outside the Biblical Heroes?

George Washington - from his earliest days - studied, understood, believed, and instructed others in Divine Providence, more than any other human being who ever lived, including Christ, Apostle Paul, Moses and David!

George Washington has NOT been fully known BECAUSE:

    (1) BECAUSE atheists, agnostics, secularists and modernists are not fully comprehensive of the Great and Complex Doctrine of Providence - also known as Augustinianism, Calvinism, Divine Election, The Counsel of God, and by the common name: Predestination;

    (2) BECAUSE even among Christians who have written about George Washington, Providence is not nearly the prevalent doctrine in AD 1900-2000 that it was from AD-400 to 1800, as it does not lend itself to shallow interpretation of Scripture, and with modern entertainmment-based Churches - with "one-verse to one-chapter devotionals" and "20 minute sermonettes" - shallow is all there is.

    (3) BECAUSE those who do understand this deep-but-grand doctrine of Providence, have neither the time nor inclination to research George Washington's 10,000 letters, 40 years of dairies, 60,000 pages of documents and memos, with a decade of "several-a-day" General Military Orders, covering a span of 30 years (1753 - 1783), with a total of over 100,000 relevant pages and letters, to and from Washington!

FACT! George Washington - from his earliest days - studied, understood, believed, and instructed others in Divine Providence, more than any other human being who ever lived, including Christ (as His public service was only three years compared to Washington's 51 years), Apostle Paul, Moses and David, etc.

Thus the greatest man who ever lived outside the Holy Scripture is not known. His true personage is hardly understood regarding the 'whats' and 'hows' and 'whys' of Washington that should be known.

Let us hasten to say - George Washington was not perfect - but even though he was:

    > a sinner-needing-to-be-saved like the rest of us,

    >> but so far above most of us . . .

    >>> that ALL of us, . . .

    >>>> can learn from the best of us!

George Washington: The Greatest Christian Example:

George Washington is the best detailed example of living Christianity in all phases of life: of marriage, children, grandchildren, in-laws, neighbors, friends' community, Church, local-state-and federal government; in poverty-&-prosperity, in war-&-peace - with 100,000 pages of documents to him and by him, covering 50 years of adult life . . . currently extant.

George Washington lived a real, full life in society, and was not a one-in-history anomaly as were the following:

    > Adam . . . the only one created and walking in the Garden with God;

    > Noah . . . the only one set to build an ark as his life's work;

    > Enoch . . . the first great prophet, who was translated that he should not see death;

    > Abraham . . . called to leave family, city, nation, and all things to wander in the desert as God led, then to sacrifice his son;

    > Moses . . . living in the desert 40 years, after the Exodus and Red Sea;

    > David . . . started by killing a Giant, then killed 200 men bare handed to provide their foreskins as dowery, engaged war with many nation, and spent his years "inventing instruments of musick" and writing the largest book of Scripture: Psalms.

    > Great Prophets - as Jeremiah forbidden to marry - and Ezekiel's wife taken to free him for intense ministry;

    > John the Baptist . . . not married, and full ministry lasted approximately 6-months, seemingly ignored by the Christ He proclaimed as he awaited martyrdom in prison;

    > Apostle Paul . . . with Road to Damascus appearance of Christ - AFTER murdering Christians, and his missionary life afterward to many nations, writing half the documents of the Christian Covenant, ending life with martyrdom;

Washington was NOT like these 'once-in-history-supernatural-anomalies' Washington was a normal person not experiencing the supernatural as the just-named did, Washington, who lived in relatively modern times:

. . . who struggled to learn on his own - home schooled - never attending a regular school; his father dying while George was still a child,his mother struggling, he lived some with a step-brother, began working at a very early age, and became a soldier - fleeing home also at an early age;

. . . he eventually married a widow, raised step-children and adopted step-grandchildren, buried a precious daughter, fought tremendously difficult wars;

. . . who farmed as a "Great Shepherd" with over 1,000 sheep regularly in his flock; who was a surveyor, a soldier, a general, a Mason, a Congressional Representative, and President of the USA;

. . . who was desperately ill in young manhood, could never father children, lost his teeth early in life, got sick soon after the presidency, and died before ever reaching age 70;

. . . he never parted the Red Sea, never called down plagues on the British as Moses did Pharaoh, never walked on water as Peter, nor had a Damascus encounter with Christ as did Paul;

COMPARATIVELY:

Comparatively, what do we really know about the daily lives of the twelve Disciples?

Of Jesus Himself outside of Ministry?

Or the Apostle Paul, Timothy, Titus, James, Jude, etc., regarding daily life: wife, children, grandchildren, neighbors, parents, siblings, and extended relatives?

Most of the New Testament leaders were not married - from John the Baptist through Jesus and Paul - Timothy and Titus! None were soldiers that we know of, few were previously in government, and if some were married - we don't know the name of a single New Testament Leader's spouse or children.

We don't know what most did before becoming Apostles, or what they did after Christ ascended. We don't know how they handled life, marriage, children, blended families, step-children, in-laws, financial difficulties (Washington had to borrow $600 to go to his own Inaugural as President of the USA!)

In the New Testament, if they were not martyred, we don't know how they handled war, aging, death, intense ministry with marriage and family, legal problems with foreign occupation and missionary work in other lands.

Much of what we do not know about ANY of the New Testament's great leaders . . . God has blessed us in allowing us to know ALL OF THESE THINGS in the life of George Washington!

George Washington's Example

Thus there is no better record - neither in all of history, nor in all of Christendom - of what Bible Christianity looks like, lived out in the real world:

. . . as "Deeds, not Words!"

The "Father of Our Country", the "Victor of valley Forge", - First in War! First in Peace! First in the Hearts of His Countrymen! This author would add "First with a Heart for God" among All Americans!

George Washington: American Patriot, Bible Scholar, Apostle of Providence, Teacher of Sovereignty, Preacher of Providence, Theologian, and Disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ!

BUT FIRST: You must understand Providence;

AND SECOND: Then you can re-attempt to understand the great one: George Washington, Father of Our Country!

WASHINGTON LONGS TO BE PREACHER

    but it will be time enough for me to turn preacher when my present appointment ceases; and therefore I shall add no more on the Doctrine of Providence..."

    [SOURCE: George Washington in a Letter to Thomas Nelson Jr. on 20 August 1778].

NEWTONSTEIN NOTE: George Washington's spelling, grammatical errors, etc., and 1700's century spellings are retained in his quotes as he made them.

However, 'Single Quote Marks' or apostrophes (as you wish to call them ' ' ') within George Washington's quotes, are added to call attention to significant words and phrases - mostly missed, often ignored, little understood, and seldom, if ever, written about . . . mostly those words and phrases of Reformed Theology.

Why do we add these single quotes within Washington's quotes? this?

    FACT: For any scholar, historian, theologian, philosopher or researcher who does not understand "Reformed Theology", it is not possible for them to understand the beliefs, philosophy, behaviour and statements of George Washington, regardless how many Ph.D.'s

    For example of the pervasiveness of Washington's Doctrine of Providence in all phases of life, George Washington declares without reservation, hesitation, or equivocation:

[8] "There is no such thing 'as coincidence'. God 'wills the world' according to 'His Design'."

[SOURCE: George Washington, From His Personal Diaries, (1773)].

Again . . .

George Washington's Reformed Theology:

Unless one fully comprehends these short and seemingly simple statements - as almost all writers we have researched blithely 'gloss over and/or ignore without comment upon their importance - it is impossible to understand George Washington's many, many deeper statements of Providence (near 300 uses of the word Providence and over 2,000 references);

George Washington wrote and spoke continuously over 40 years of God's Divine Will of Providence carried out in the lives of men, armies and nations, that George Washington constantly "preaches about" (his choice of words) in his speeches, diaries and letters.

You must understand, that in Washington's 'Reformed Theological Worldview', there is no such thing as 'coincidence', and obviously, neither is there 'luck', 'fortune', 'fate' or even 'chance' in an ultimate sense - much less that which is random!

George Washington, and others of "Reformed Theology" (partial and full), both in history - such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, Thomas Hooker, and John Locke, all as 'Full-Reformed theologians;

Jacobus Arminius & John Wesley as partially Reformed;

George Whitefield, the Puritans, Harvard Founder John Harvard and many Harvard Presidents such as Cotton & Increase Mathers; the Great Missionary David Brainard, Princeton Presidents Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan Witherspoon, Timothy Dwight of Yale, John Gano of Browns University - and theologians in the modern world from D. James Kennedy to John MacArthur - all as 'Full-Reformed theologians;

Some of these Reformed Leaders may use the words 'fate', 'fortune' and 'destiny' - and to a lesser degree 'chance' - and rarely 'luck' (usually the word 'luck' is avoided except for the most youthful and/or frivolous occasions), but they don't mean them to be understood as they would be in a modern newspaper or magazine article in the USA in the 21st century.

To the men named above, and in their writings - along with George Washington - 'fate', 'fortune' and 'destiny' are simply common words describing the 'providence', the 'will', . . .the 'sovereignty' and the 'council' . . . the design' and the 'plan', . . .the 'decree and 'the predestination of God' for any person, plan, place, matter or situation;

In their Reformed Worldview, God "Conducts the affairs of men" as Washington says (see below);

With God in Divine Providence, designing, decreeing, directing, determining and using men and armies - such as Washington - simply as "Instruments" of His Divine Will, they see the world and all events much differently than most people in the world today.

This Reformed Worldview of absolute Divine Sovereignty and Providence will surly seem impossible to those of liberal ilk no doctrine and Ivy League Schools, but truthfully, Washington's writings are as full of his devout Reformed Doctrine as can be.

    NOTE: we are not asking you to believe Reformed Doctrine or accept it for your own. Rather, we are seeking to help modern readers - the non-familiar and non-religious - understand it . . . SO THAT you may better understand George Washington.

    All of the Founding Fathers believed this was to some degree, though Washington had the deepest belief in Reformed Doctrine personally, exceeding almost all ministers of his day, or any day].

Washington: No Separation between 'Church-&-Life'!

    If you want to understand Washington, and try to grasp how he became the most successful person who ever lived, and the most beloved world leader of all time - as esteemed by followers, peers, opponents and enemies alike - you must understand George Washington's beliefs, and how that George Washington saw himself as follows:

    George Washington saw Himself:

      > Called and Chosen by God; [19] [24] [29-30] [See Quotes below]

      > Predestined to great purpose; [10][22-b] [25] [29-30]

      > Blessed by the greatest acts of Divine blessing and Providence; [12-13][20] [23] below

      > "Indestructible!" as a Instrument in God's Hand; [9] [12-13] [19] [20] [25] [30] below

      > "Undefeatable!" in carrying out God's Will; [9] [12-13] [19] [20] [25] below

    Thus George Washington had the most unshakable confidence and faith, he NEVER quit, he NEVER gave up, and he ALWAYS knew victory was certain, "IF" - "IF" - "IF" he and his army and nation stayed dedicated to God, His Providence, His Charge, and Calling', upon him as 'God's Instrument'.

    Thus George Washington also took everything in stride.

    He did his best to fulfill God's Will upon his life, and took everything that happened - wonderful or tragic - as part of God's EXACT plan for his life: carefully designed, necessarily, important, and absolutely immutable.

    By believing God was the SUPREME ARCHITECT: Inherently "BLUE-PRINTING" - designing, decreeing, directing, conducting, ruling, predestinating, and working all things after the Counsel of His Own Will, there was never any reason to 'feel sorry' about, whine about, blame others, give up, or lose faith.

    This resolve and "acquiescence to God's Will" (See quote [11] below) - Washington amazingly applied to the soldiers he killed as well as the soldiers trying to kill him!

    Washington absolutely believed he could NOT die until God's purpose for him was complete! And he was correct! George Washington could not die any more than Noah could have fallen off the Ark and broken his neck!

    Thus George Washington made what seemed to many as very rash and arrogant statements in his fearless attitude toward death:

      [10] "I heard the bullets whistle and believe me, there is something charming in the sound."

      [SOURCE: George Washington in a letter to his brother John Augustine Washington on 31 May 1754].

    Look at a single paragraph from his First Inaugural Address to see his comprehensive, Reformed Worldview, absolutely based on Divine Will of Providence:

      [11] "... it would be peculiarly improper to omit in this first official Act, my fervent supplications

      > To that 'Almighty Being'

      > Who 'Rules Over the Universe',

      > Who 'Presides in the Councils of Nations',

      > and Whose 'Providential aids' can supply every human defect,

      > that 'His Benediction may Consecrate'

      > to the liberties and happiness of the People of the United States, 'a Government' instituted by themselves for these essential purposes:

      > and may enable 'Every Instrument' employed in its administration',

      > to execute with success,

      > the functions allotted to 'His Charge' (God's Calling and Mandate upon their lives).

      > [That is 'Every Instrument', which 'His Benediction Consecrates' to 'A Government instituted for these purposes' - being Consecrated by His Benediction enables each Instrument to keep 'His Charge' successfully! (Charge - The word used all through the Bible for bring given by God a 'Divine Duty, a Divine Task, a Heavenly Responsibility)]

      > In tendering this homage (worship)to

      > The 'Great Author of Every Public and Private Good'

      > I assure myself, that it expresses 'your sentiments not less than my own'; nor those of my fellow-citizens at large, less than either.

      > No People can be 'Bound' to acknowledge and adore 'The Invisible Hand',

      > which 'Conducts the Affairs of Men' MORE than the People of the United States.

      > 'Every step', by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation,

      > seems to have been distinguished by some 'token (Divine sign) of Providential Agency..."

      END OF QUOTE:

    Is not this small portion of Washington's First Inaugural Address amazing and profound?

    Is this not unbelievable, that any world leader outside of Scripture could so believe?

George Washington Continues:

    [12] "The ways of Providence being inscrutable (not totally understood as to what and why - see Dictionary Footnote 10);

    and the justice of it not to be scanned (evaluated) by the shallow eye of humanity, nor to be counteracted by the utmost efforts of human power or wisdom'

    Resignation, and as far as the strength of our 'Reason and Religion' can carry us, a cheerful acquiescence to the Divine Will, is what we are to aim."

    [SOURCE: George Washington Letter to Col. Burwell Bassett, April 25, 1773].

      [13] "As I have heard since my arriv'l at this place, a circumstantial account of my death and dying speech, I take this early oppertunity of contradicting both, and of assuring you that

      I now exist and appear in the land of the living by the 'miraculous care of Providence', that protected me 'beyond all human expectation';

      I had 4 Bullets through my Coat, and two Horses shot under me, and yet escaped unhurt..."

    Washington also worded the same event this way at a little later date:

      [14] "By the 'All-powerful Dispensations of Providence', I have been protected beyond all human probability and expectation; for I had four bullets through my coat, and two horses shot under me, yet escaped unhurt, altho' death was levelling my companions on every side."

Washington Serious at an Early Age:

[NEWTONSTEIN NOTE: Washington had a deep understanding of Reformed Doctrine from an early age, as the above quote was made at age 23.

    See that he was also against all forms of gambling from an early age:

      [15]"I have always, so far as it was in my power, endeavored to discourage gaming in the camp; and always shall, so long as I have the honor to preside there."

      [SOURCE: George Washington Letter to Governor Robert Dinwiddie, February 2, 1756 (age 23)].

      It was Washington the young Officer - not an old man - who had strict rules of decency in gaming, playing cards, cussing, swearing, lying, indecent dress, attending to Worship, daily hour of prayer, etc.,

      [I]in which Washington decreed that men be given lashes for offending in these matters - and even court martial - if the cursing, card-playing, blasphemy and swearing were of a deliberate and careless manner. Homosexuals were driven from the Army with a degrading public ceremony.

      Washington was always a serious person, writing at age 15:

        [16] "When you speak of God, or His attributes, let it be seriously and with reverence."

      This he believed as a teen-ager and never deviated all through his life.

      Thus many people, from Thomas Jefferson to John Jay spoke of his 'perfection' as a human being, and even Napoleon and King George-III (his embittered enemy whom he defeated) spoke of him as being the greatest person ever.

      For Example:

        [17] "Never did nature and fortune combine more perfectly to make a man great, and to place him in the same constellation with whatever worthies have merited from man an everlasting remembrance."

        "He was, indeed, in every sense of the words, a wise, a good, and a great man."

        So said Thomas Jefferson, himself, one of the greatest minds and goodliest men who ever graced this Earth! See briefly in one page, what World-Leaders said of George Washington:

        What World-Leaders said of George Washington

        [18] Henry Muhlenberg (A Lutheran Missionary from Germany to Pennsylvania) said

        For great men to praise a living peer - especially from many lands - Washington is almost without comparison! Even Jesus Christ was hated by His own countrymen and put to a criminal's death! Paul was stoned and imprisoned. Lincoln was hated by many and mocked in numerous ways by his own countrymen.

        With Washington being seen as so different, so good, and so great, we ask you to consider very carefully and very cautiously, any one speaking against him - which were extremely few:

          > from an embittered servant,

          > to an ignorant, rude, completely-failed Minister such as the immature, and arrogant Rev. Abercrombie; (the forever dubious 'ministerial assistant') who is quoted by every atheist, agnostic and non-Christian who writes on Washington.

        The dufless Abercrombie, minister of the Church of England, was ANGRY that General Washington left the hight-&-mighty Church of England when the War broke out!

        Though Washington had been a member from birth - as had his father and grandfather before him - after 42 years he did as follows:

          > Washington never resumed his Church of England (COE) membership;

          > Never resumed his office in the COE as vestryman;

          > Never again received communion from their table;

          > Never again paid tithes, 'church dues' or gave large offerings to them; (possible the main reason Ministers Abercrombie and White were so obstinate against Washington!!!)

          > Never again faithfully attending meetings;

After the Church of England:

Instead, Washington attended most often the Lutheran, Baptist, Quakers, Congregationalists, and Catholics - ALL of whom supported him in the Revolutionary War, were his Chaplains, prayed for and with him, provided food and supplies (many Quakers) and fought by his side.

Contrastingly, every Church of England Minister in the whole 13 Colonies - EXCEPT for two - returned to England during the War: AGAINST AMERICA, supporting, praying for, and many serving as Military Chaplains FOR ENGLAND!

One exception was the smug, self-important and crass opportunist Bishop White (who thought a patriot - started a new Denomination, seeking to draw American Churches of England to join his American movement of the same religion with a different name: Episcopalian,

. . . Bishop White was also consistently demeaning to President Washington because he would not become a join his movement whole-heartedly!

However, many American churches did become Episcopalians, including the one George and Martha had been members of!

MASON "PARSON" WEEMS:
The other exception was his Beloved Minister, neighbor, friend, and fellow-soldier Mason 'Parson' Weems, who left the COE and became a Frontier Methodist-like evangelist (before writing the great book on George Washington, the best seller for the next 150 years!).

The dim-witted Abercrombie - being was so ignorant and so rude as to rebuke President Washington, personally and publicly - simply for not embracing the Anglican Church, (which Church had turned their backs completely upon the American Cause and stood loyal to the Crown of England!).

How rude can one be to publicly rebuke a current president over Church Participation who is sitting in attendance!

Even with Ordained Ministers always in demand in the growing American colonies, it is little wonder, that the crude, crass and slow-witted Abercrombie could never get a Church of his own, and was destind (by Providence!) to never being more than a 'minister's assistant' - a glorified altar-boy if you will - for forty years!

Keeping George Washington's serious nature in mind, and his deeply and well-thought out Reformed Theology - which is primarily about the 'Predestination and Determination of God' "ruling all nations to whom it is their duty to obey" says Washington, let us proceed to some of his more than 300 quotes on this his favorite Doctrine:

George Washington on the Providence of God:

[19] "... The Hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in all this

that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith, and more than wicked that has not gratitude enough to acknowledge his obligations,

but it will be time enough for me to 'turn preacher' when my present appointment ceases;

and therefore I shall add no more on the Doctrine of Providence..."

George Washington Prophesies for 'Evidence of God':

[23-a] "I have often thought how much happier I should have been, if, instead of accepting of a command under such circumstances, I had taken my musket on my shoulder and entered the ranks, or, if I could have justified the measure to posterity and my own conscience, had retired to the back country, and lived in a wigwam.

[23-b] If I shall be able to rise superior to these and many other difficulties, which might be enumerated, I shall most religiously believe, that 'The Finger of Providence' is in it, to blind the eyes of our enemies."

The Purposes of God

[27] "The determinations of Providence are always wise, often inscrutable; and, though its decrees appear to bear hard upon us at times, is nevertheless meant for gracious purposes."

[SOURCE: George Washington - Letter to Bryan Fairfax, March 1, 1778].

[28] "My friends therefore may believe me sincere in my professions of attachment to them, whilst 'Providence has a joint claim' to my humble and grateful thanks, for its 'protection and direction' of me, through the many difficult and intricate scenes, which this contest hath produced;

and for the constant interposition in our behalf, when the clouds were heaviest and seemed ready to burst upon us.

To paint the distresses and perilous situation of this army in the course of last winter, for want of cloaths, provisions, and almost every other necessary, essential to the well-being, I may say existence, of an army, would require more time and an abler pen than mine;

[29] nor, since our prospects have so miraculously brightened, shall I attempt it, or even bear it in remembrance, further than as a memento of what is Due to 'The Great Author of All the Care and Good', that have been extended in relieving us in difficulties and distress."

[SOURCE: George Washington - Letter to Landon Carter, May 30, 1778].

The Rev. Samuel Davies, at that time a clergyman in Hanover County, preached a sermon to one of these companies on August 17, which was printed in Philadelphia and London, and entitled Religion and Patriotism the Constituents of a Good Soldier.

[30] After applauding the patriotic spirit and military ardor, which had begun to manifest themselves, the preacher Samuel Davies adds:

    "As a remarkable instance of this, I may point out to the public that heroic youth, Colonel Washington, whom I cannot but hope Providence has has hitherto preserved in so signal a manner for some important service to his country."

In this long letter, Washington Explains Providence, how it relates to human opposed thinking, and how God still carries out through us, that which is against our will.

    [BACKGROUND NOTE: Washington's elderly friend, Bryan Fairfax had just returned to Virginia after attempting to flee to England to live because his political views were so far out of accord with Washington, the American Cause, his Virginia friends and neighbors.

    He had to appeal to Continental Army headquarters to obtain - permission to leave the country and get a Passport from General Washington, to then go to New York and appeal to the British Commander to gain permission to LEAVE the USA and go to England to be with those with whom he agreed and wanted to win this War.

    General Washington graciously granted the old man permission to leave and a U.S. Passport to go with it.

    Please note that General Washington could have easily STOPPED Bryan Fairfax from leaving his country (and his family) and fleeing to England - where he would obviously speak against the American Cause - by a simple nod of Washington's head to a secretary . . . but he didn't:

    Washington granted his angry, old friend a passport to flee to England."

    However, after Mr. Fairfax left his Virginia family and arrived in New York with his American Passport to seek approval from the British Commander to seek refuge in England, he found that the British required him to take certain loyalty oaths to the King, Church of England, renouncing America and all Americans, etc., before allowing him to go to England.

    Mr. Fairfax - though stubbornly wrong and dogmatic to the extreme, was an honest man, and his conscience would not permit him to subscribe to such restrictions in taking the oaths.

    So he returned to Virginia in defeat: fearful of scoffing, rebuke, scorn and perhaps serious persecution. He was bitter, angry, confused, hostile to all, defensive and determined to stand his ground no matter what it cost him.

    Mr. Fairfax was AGAINST the American position, AGAINST his neighbors, AGAINST his family, and especially AGAINST Washington's oft-repeated position that God was on the side of the Patriots and would MAKE them prevail in their just cause.

    Isolated back in Virginia near Washington's own Mt. Vernon, like a scorpion poised to sting, Bryan Fairfax remained throughout the war. His neighbors left him alone and respected the old man for his independence and his long life as a good man.

    George Washington - as busy and pressured as can be imagined - wrote the old man and neighbor a brief kindly letter.

    Mr. Fairfax, when receiving Washington's Letter, was apparently expecting a harsh rebuke from the young General, and a nasty diatribe against an "Old Fool!" as the cliche goes:

      "There's no fool like an OLD FOOL!"

    Thus when he opened the letter and found kind words, respect, genuine care, continued friendship, support for his right to his conscience and opinion, and an offer to assist, if needed in some way . . .

    . . . the angry old man was stunned to say the least, and deeply touched by Washington's kindness and gesture, . . .

    . . . in fact, he declares it the singular most touching incident of his life!

    Thus the hurting old man wrote to the young General as follows:

Reply of Bryan Fairfax to General George Washington,After his return to Virginia: Letter dated Dec. 8, 1777].

    "There are Times when Favours conferred make a greater Impression than at others; for, tho' I have received many, and hope I have not been unmindful of them,

    yet that, at a Time when your Popularity was at the highest and mine at the lowest,

    and when it is so common for Men's Resentments to run high agst (against) those that differ from them in Opinion,

    that You should act with your wonted Kindness towards me, hath affected me more than any Favour I have received;

    and could not be believed by some in N: York, . . .

    . . . it being above the Run of common Minds."

END OF BACKGROUND:

Washington's Reply to Bryan Fairfax:

    "The Sentiments you have expressed of me in this Letter are highly flattering — meriting my warmest acknowledgements, as I have too good an opinion of your sincerity and candour, . . .

    . . . . to believe that you are (even) capable of unmeaning professions - & speaking a language foreign from your heart —

    WASHINGTON REAFFIRMS FRIENDSHIP:
    The friendship I ever professed, & felt for you, met with no diminution from the difference in our political sentiments

    I knew the rectitude of my own intentions & believing in the sincerity of yours,

      >> lamented,

      >> though I did not condemn,

      >> your renunciation of the creed I had adopted —

    [N]nor do I think any person, or power ought to do it whilst your conduct is not opposed to the general Interest of the People, & the measures they are pursuing—

WASHINGTON ON PROVIDENCE:
[NOTE: Washington writes on Providence in the absolute tense 99.9% of the time, but on this occasion uses the word 'may' instead of 'must'.

Why?

Did he have a moment of doubt? Not at all!

Washington was trying to convince a neighbor, a friend, a wealthy Englishman who was so strongly against the American Cause, that he tried his best to move to England for the duration, even thought it meant leaving his wife and extended family!

He was Washington's Elder: well-known, a man of previous power and position, proud, stubborn, and rich for decades; . . .

. . . now criticized by many, and yet still stubbornly believing the opposite of Washington in all things.

Nursing his deep wounds from seemingly proved to fail in open public discourse . . . the last thing he needs is for young Washington to say: I told you so.

So Washington approaches him with a whole new worldview, and uses the word 'may' regarding the Providence that directs all of us in all things.

The brilliant, wise and diplomatic Washington, even uses the Doctrine of Providence to comfort Mr. Fairfax, and provide him a sound reason to have not been accepted into England;

Washington telling him that GOD WAS IN IT for his good and his family!

Washington begins by explaining Providence, how it relates to human thinking when such thinking is opposed to God's Plan, and how God's Providence still carries out His Divine Design through us, even when that is against our will.

We repeat a thought by Washington to get back into the flow of his letter:

    WASHINGTON CONTINUES: "The friendship I ever professed, & felt for you, met with no diminution from the difference in our political sentiments

    I knew the rectitude of my own intentions & believing in the sincerity of yours,

      >> lamented,

      >> though I did not condemn,

      >> your renunciation of the creed I had adopted —

    [N]nor do I think any person, or power, ought to do it whilst your conduct is not opposed to the general Interest of the People, & the measures they are pursuing—

    The latter, that is our actions, depending on ourselves may be controuled, while the powers of thinking originating from higher causes, cannot always be moulded to our wishes.

    The determinations of Providence are always wise — often inscrutable (not fully understood) —

    - and, tho’ its decrees appear to bear hard upon us at times, is, nevertheless meant for gracious purposes —

    WASHINGTON COMFORTS HIM:
    In this light I cannot help viewing your late disappointment; for if you had been permitted to have gone to England, unrestrained even by the rigid Oaths which are administered upon those occasions' -

    - your feelings as a husband, parent, &ca (etc.,) must have been considerable (and) would in the prospect of a long — perhaps lasting separation (to possibly never to see his wife, children, grandchildren again) from your nearest relatives —

    - what then must they have been if the obligation of an Oath had left you without a Will? (choice or power to change the situation, once in England)

George Washington - from his earliest days - studied, understood, believed, and instructed others in Divine Providence, more than any other human being who ever lived, including Christ, Apostle Paul, Moses and David! 23. From Fort Trial on Smith’s River, I returned to Fort William on the Catawba, where I met Colonel Buchanan with about thirty men, (chiefly officers,) to conduct me up Jackson’s River, along the range of forts. With this small company of irregulars, with whom order, regularity, circumspection, and vigilance were matters of derision and contempt,

we set out, and, by 'The Protection of *Providence', reached Augusta Court-House in seven days, without meeting the enemy; otherwise we must have fallen a sacrifice, through the indiscretion of these whooping, hallooing gentlemen soldiers!…

To His Mother - MRS. MARY WASHINGTON [Fort Cumberland, July 18, 1755.] Honour'd Mad'm: As I doubt not but you have heard of our defeat, ... we were attack'd by a Body of French and Indns. whose number, (I am certain) did not exceed 300 Men; our's consisted of abt. 1,300 well arm'd Troops; chiefly of the English Soldiers, who were struck with such a panick, that they behav'd with more cowardice than it is possible to conceive;

The Officers behav'd Gallantly in order to encourage their Men, for which they suffer'd greatly; there being near 60 kill'd and wounded; a large proportion out of the number we had!

The Virginia Troops shew'd a good deal of Bravery, and were near all kill'd; for I believe out of 3 Companys that were there, there is scarce 30 Men left alive;

Capt. Peyrouny and all his Officer's down to a Corporal was kill'd; Capt. Polson shar'd near as hard a Fate; for only one of his was left: In short the dastardly behaviour of those they call regular's expos'd all others that were inclin'd to do their duty to almost certain death; and at last, in dispight of all the efforts of the Officer's to the Contrary, they broke and run as Sheep pursued by dogs; and it was impossible to rally them.

The Genl. was wounded; of w'ch he died 3 Days after; Sir Peter Halket was kill'd in the Field where died many other brave Officer's; I escap'd with't a wound, tho' I had four Bullets through my Coat, and two Horses shot under me;

Captns. Orme and Morris two of the Genls. Aids de Camp, were wounded early in the Engagem't, which render'd the duty hard upon me, as I was the only person then left to distribute the Genl's. Orders

which I was scarcely able to do, as I was not half recover'd from a violent illness, that confin'd me to my Bed, and a Waggon, for above 10 Days;

"Our own Country's Honor, all call upon us for a vigorous and manly exertion, and if we now shamefully fail, we shall become infamous to the whole world. Let us therefore rely upon The Goodness of the Cause, and the aid of The Supreme Being, in whose hands Victory is,

to animate and encourage us to great and noble Actions -

The Eyes of all our Countrymen are now upon us, and we shall have their blessings, and praises, if happily we are the instruments of saving them from the Tyranny mediated against them.

Let us therefore animate and encourage each other, and shew the whole world, that a Freeman contending for Liberty on his own ground is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth."

"My friends therefore may believe me sincere in my professions of attachment to them, whilst Providence has a joint claim to my humble and grateful thanks, for its protection and direction of me, through the many difficult and intricate scenes, which this contest hath produced;

To paint the distresses and perilous situation of this army in the course of last winter, for want of cloaths, provisions, and almost every other necessary, essential to the well-being, I may say existence, of an army, would require more time and an abler pen than mine;

nor, since our prospects have so miraculously brightened, shall I attempt it, or even bear it in remembrance, further than as

"Observe good faith and justice towards all Nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all. Religion and Morality enjoin this conduct; and can it be, that good policy does not equally enjoin it? It will be worthy of a free, enlightened, and, at no distant period, a great Nation, to give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence. Who can doubt, that, in the course of time and things, the fruits of such a plan would richly repay any temporary advantages, which might be lost by a steady adherence to it? Indeed, I do not believe, that Providence has done so much for nothing.

It has always been my creed that we should not be left as an awful monument to prove, "that Mankind, under the most favourable circumstances for civil liberty and happiness, are unequal to the task of Governing themselves, and therefore made for a Master."

==== Or at least we may, with a kind of grateful and pious exultation, trace the finger of Providence through those dark and mysterious events, which first induced the States to appoint a general Convention and then led them one after another (by such steps as were best calculated to effect the object) into an adoption of the system recommended by that general Convention; thereby, in all human probability, laying a lasting foundation for tranquillity and happiness; when we had but too much reason to fear that confusion and misery were coming rapidly upon us. That the same good Providence may still continue to protect us and prevent us from dashing the cup of national felicity just as it has been lifted to our lips, is the earnest prayer of My Dear Sir, your faithful friend, &c. 22

CAMBRIDGE BOTTOM PAGE To MRS. MARY WASHINGTON [Fort Cumberland, July 18, 1755.]

Honour'd Mad'm: As I doubt not but you have heard of our defeat, ... we were attack'd by a Body of French and Indns. whose number, (I am certain) did not exceed 300 Men; our's consisted of abt. 1,300 well arm'd Troops; chiefly of the English Soldiers, who were struck with such a panick, that they behav'd with more cowardice than it is possible to conceive;

The Officers behav'd Gallantly in order to encourage their Men, for which they suffer'd greatly; there being near 60 kill'd and wounded; a large proportion out of the number we had!

The Virginia Troops shew'd a good deal of Bravery, and were near all kill'd; for I believe out of 3 Companys that were there, there is scarce 30 Men left alive;

Capt. Peyrouny and all his Officer's down to a Corporal was kill'd;

Capt. Polson shar'd near as hard a Fate; for only one of his was left:

In short the dastardly behaviour of those they call regular's expos'd all others that were inclin'd to do their duty to almost certain death; and at last, in dispight of all the efforts of the Officer's to the Contrary, they broke and run as Sheep pursued by dogs; and it was impossible to rally them.

The Genl. was wounded; of w'ch he died 3 Days after; Sir Peter Halket was kill'd in the Field where died many other brave Officer's; I escap'd with't a wound, tho' I had four Bullets through my Coat, and two Horses shot under me; Captns.

Orme and Morris two of the Genls. Aids de Camp, were wounded early in the Engagem't, which render'd the duty hard upon me, as I was the only person then left to distribute the Genl's. Orders which I was scarcely able to do, as I was not half recover'd from a violent illness, that confin'd me to my Bed, and a Waggon, for above 10 Days;

... I am, Hon'd Madam Yr. most dutiful Son

Victory was their smallest expectation, but see the wondrous works of Providence!

Washington's commission from Dinwiddie, dated Aug. 14, 1755, appointed him

    >> Colonel of the Virginia Regiment and

    >> Commander in Chief of All the Forces:

      ** now raised;

      ** and to be raised;

      ** for the defense of his Majesty's colony;

      ** and for repelling the unjust and hostile invasions of the French;

      ** and their Indian allies.

    o "Colonel Washington" at this time was age 23!

A peculiar sense of economy inspired Dinwiddie to specially note that Washington's pay commenced September 1.

In the instructions accompanying the commission the French are accused of unjustly invading his Majesty's lands on the Ohio;

    >> the Virginia Regiment is to consist of 16 companies;

    >> goods and presents were to be purchased for the Indians:

    >> morality and virtue were to be inculcated among the troops

    >> and drunkenness and swearing were to be punished.

    The text of Washington's commission and instructions are printed as follows:
