Abraham Lincoln: Faith Journey, In His Own Words!

Abraham Lincoln, Many Points of Faith;

They ALL are correct, the record shows! How can this be? because Abraham Lincoln traveled a 'Gerrymandering Journey of Faith' almost like none other, and a far longer journey than 99.99% who have ever lived!


THE BEGINNING: Abraham Lincoln began as 'Angry-&-Bitter-Young-Atheist': His father was harsh to the point of cruelty, not allowing young Abe to go to school and working him like a slave. Abe worked for his father from darkest-dawn to noon-day, then was hired-out to the neighbors who worked him like a pack-mule from noon-day to darkest evening.

As you learned in grammar school, Abe taught himself to read, and then read every time he had opportunity: which was only when Moon was bright, and then by taking chinking from between the logs of his loft, letting soft and silvery Moonbeams stream onto the pages of his borrowed-books: in the middle of night when his tired body competed with his mind for the right to rest.

His childhood thirst to read never was never quenched, but only whetted, creating in him a perpetual thirsting for knowledge that burned like a fire: infinitely insatiable and ultimately unmitigated. That Lincoln became the 'Literary Genius of American Statesman' is without dispute.

Lincoln - unschooled but not uneducated - somehow achieved literary profundity with power, conquering the mysterious magic that is 'reason-&-rationale intricately woven into rhythm-&-rhyme - carried by invincible cadence - whose ebb and flow forcefully transported readers from deepest ravines to highest echelons of imagery: by the way of dark depressing tunnels that writhed serpentine-like through solid rock: suddenly bursting with brilliant rays of light - that pierced the coldest calloused soul.

Lincoln lacked erudition but not enigma, and enticed his listeners into a seductive state of on mind - his way with words a wonder of wonders, inviting and inducing deepest contemplation in the hearts of hearers then and now; exceeding all perhaps - except for once again: the Deity that is Christ.

Amazing firstly for the prohibitive probabilities are 'Lincoln the Rail-Splitter' and 'Christ the Carpenter' from Galilee: how could such calloused hands pen such wondrous words: stupendous for sublime simplicity.

His mother - a Queen whose throne was a straight-backed-homemade-chair resting on a dirt floor, and whose palace was a log cabin, where neither windows allowed sunlight to pour into the drab-&-dreary room, nor poured light into her heavy heart.

    >> However, she poured the light of her soul into the son so-named Abe.

    >> So very sadly, her candle was 'snuffed-out' when young Abe was only nine.

    Abraham Lincoln's father was a strict-believer in "Providence!" as his faith (as was George Washington) - meaning EVERYTHING that happens is EXACTLY what God caused to happen; that ALL THINGS - not just earthquakes and hurricanes, are ACTS of GOD!

    So little Abe was harshly told in so many words and actions:

      'This is God's will, Boy! God made your mother die on purpose because this is best for you in the long run. You must deserve it or it wouldn't happen. Now don't question God, Boy, and don't be sorrowin' none - it don't help none no how: just keep workin' like I tells ya'!"

      But Little Abe - honest broken heart that he had - DID QUESTION . . . GOD, in greatest sincerity.

      A dozen years later young Lincoln fell deeply in love with the young beauty Ann Rutledge describing as charming, graceful feminine by one and all. She was engaged at the time to another. . . but was so attracted irresistibly to young Abe:

      Though censuses considered Lincoln neither handsome nor winsome, beautiful Ann was drawn to the fire of Lincoln's words as the proverbial moth to the flame: the power-&-passion of his logic for all-things-judicial, the courage which he challenged all debaters and destroyed them easily and equally with a trinity of logic, reason and ridicule, mocking as they floundered at his challenges a fish-out-of-water.

      Suddenly and so unexpectedly, the young and beautiful Ann attracted not only Abe, by typhoid: dying in the midst of wedding plans, leaving fianceé Lincoln lost without hope and longing for suicide.

      Young Abe - honest soul that he was - DID QUESTION . . . GOD, incessantly.

      With greatest power of will, he slung suicide to the side of the road, and traveled on . . . soon met another, married, and made a baby: a son - who lived just long enough to develop a complete strangle-hold on the heart of Papa Abe - and when he had his dad in a 'full-nelson of love' - he went to be with Ann, escaping reality of life for dreams of the other world.

      Mature Abe - honest soul that he was - DID QUESTION . . . GOD, in angry tones & tomes.

      Thus we find his bitter heart, unable to bury his pain with his loved ones - boils with rage. The void left by his Mother, his Sweetheart, and his Son was as vast as the cosmos - just dark, just as cold, and just as empty. Lincoln roared at the only one whom he could 'hurt-as-he-had-been-hurt'.

      Thus Lincoln lived by God's Golden Rule' - turned inside out.

      Thus begin his earliest quotes, and imperceptibly slow, he begins to climb step-by-step from this 'Dark and Dirty Dungeon of Doom', to the very mountain-top of Fervent-&-Fundamental-Faith declaring to one and all with prudent passion: "I DO LOVE JESUS CHRIST!"

      “There was the strangest combination of church influence against me. Baker is a Campbellite; and therefore, as I suppose with few exceptions, got all of that Church. My wife had some relations in the Presbyterian churches, and some in the Episcopal churches; and therefore, wherever it would tell, I was set down as either one or the other,

      while it was everywhere contended that no Christian ought to vote for me because I belonged to no Church, and was suspected of being a Deist and had talked of fighting a duel.”

      ." She wrote,“With very great sorrow & natural indignation have I read of Mr Herndon, placing words in my mouth--never once uttered. I remember the call he made on me for a few minutes at the [St. Nicholas] hotel as he mentions, your welcome entrance a quarter of an hour afterward, naturally prevented a further interview with him. Mr Herndon, had always been an utter stranger to me, he was not considered an habitué, at our house”

      In 1846, when Lincoln ran for congress against Peter Cartwright, the noted evangelist, Cartwright tried to make Lincoln's religion or lack of it a major issue of the campaign. Responding to accusations that he was an "infidel", Lincoln defended himself, without denying that specific charge, by publishing a hand-bill in which he stated:

      That I am not a member of any Christian church is true; but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures; and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular... I do not think I could myself be brought to support a man for office whom I knew to be an open enemy of, or scoffer at, religion.

      Abraham Lincoln Searches for Answers During the Civil War & Son Willie's Death




      An even closer individual to President Lincoln, Lincoln's wife and widow, wrote exactly the opposite testimony of her husband's faith:

        "From the time of the death of our little Edward, I believe my husband's heart was directed towards religion & as time passed on - when Mr. Lincoln became elevated to Office - with the care of a great Nation, upon his shoulders - when devastating war was upon us then indeed to my knowledge - did his great heart go up daily, hourly, in prayer to God - for his sustaining power.

        When too - the overwhelming sorrow came upon us, our beautiful bright angelic boy, Willie was called away from us, to his Heavenly Home, with God's chastising hand upon us - he turned his heart to Christ.[5]

        While Lincoln never joined any church, there is disagreement about whether he experienced a conversion to Christianity later in life, particularly during his tenure as president. His close personal friend, bodyguard, and biographer Ward Hill Lamon said:

        Lincoln's wife and widow, responded to another who criticized Lincoln for not being a member of a church: Mrs. Lincoln said:

        "… As my husband was known to be the most loving and devoted husband & father we will allow these falsehoods a place where they deserve.

        We all — the whole world have been greatly shocked — at the fearful ideas — Herndon — has advanced regarding Mr. Lincoln's religious views. [NOTE: He accused Lincoln of not being a devout believer]

        You, who knew him so well & held so many conversations with him, as far back as twenty years since, know what they were.

        [He was] A man, who

          * never took the name of the Maker in vain,

          * who always read his Bible diligently,

          * who never failed to rely on God's promises

          * & looked upon Him for protection,

          * surely such a man as this, could not have been a disbeliever, or any other than what he was,

          * a true Christian gentleman.

        No one, but such a man as Herndon could venture — to suggest such an idea. From the time of the death of our little Edward, I believe my husband's heart was directed towards religion & as time passed on - when Mr. Lincoln became elevated to Office - with the care of a great Nation, upon his shoulders - when devastating war was upon us then indeed to my knowledge - did his great heart go up daily, hourly, in prayer to God - for his sustaining power.         1862On Thursday, February 20, 1862, at 5:00 P.M. Lincoln's eleven year old son, William Wallace Lincoln (Willie) died in the White House. Historians suggest that this may have been the most difficult personal crisis in his life. Willie had often remarked that he wanted to be a minister someday.[10]

        When he died, Lincoln reportedly said, "My poor boy. He was too good for this earth. God has called him home. I know that he is much better off in heaven."[11]

        After the funeral, Lincoln attempted a return to his routine, but he was unable. One week after the funeral, he isolated himself in his office and wept all day. Several people report that Lincoln told them that his feelings about religion changed at this time.[12]

        Ronald White, Lincoln's Greatest Speech (Simon & Schuster, 2002), p. 134, writes,

        "After Willie's death, he talked more frequently about God than he had before."

        Stephen Oates, With Malice Toward None: A Life of Abraham Lincoln (Harper & Row, 1977), p. 70, writes,

        Lincoln's views in relation to spiritual things seemed changed from that hour [viz., Willie's death]."

        Sandburg, Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, III:379-380, recounts a report that "Mr.

        "Speaking to me of the change which had come upon him, he said, while he could not fix any definite time, yet it was after he came here, and I am very positive that in his own mind he identified it with about the time of Willie's death."

        Noah Brooks to J.A. Reed, December 31, 1872, in "The Later Life and Religious Sentiments of Abraham Lincoln," Scribner's Monthly; Jul 1873; VOL. VI., No. 3.; pg. 340, wrote,

        At the same time, the War was not going well for the Union. General George McClellan's failure in the Peninsula Campaign came about within months after Willie's death. Next came Robert E. Lee's impressive victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run, after which he said, "I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go."[15][16]

        According to Salmon Chase, Lincoln said,

          "I made a solemn vow before God, that if General Lee was driven back from Maryland I would crown the result by the declaration of freedom to the slaves."[17]

          So, Lincoln died a Presbyterian, and was a devout, albeit nontraditional, Christian, throughout his life.
