BILL IS STILL REPENTING TELLS PRAYER MEET OF SPIRITUAL COUNSELING WASHINGTON: Years after his tearful apology for having sinned with Monica Lewinsky, President Clinton revealed yesterday that he was still receiving spiritual counseling and thanked his wife, his daughter, the nation and God for their "unmerited forgiveness." "I have been profoundly moved, as few people have, by the pure power of grace," Clinton told a gathering of religious leaders. Clinton said he was grateful "most of all to my wife and daughter, but [also] to the people I work with, to the legions of American people and to the God in whom I believe." Watching him, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton began blinking rapidly, but showed no other reaction. Other audience members nodded in approval at the President's comments. "That year was one of the most difficult years in my life," Clinton said, thanking the three clergymen who have met regularly with him "both to help me and to hold me accountable." One of Clinton's spiritual counselors, the Rev. Philip Wogaman of Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, who said the three meet routinely with the President. "We met once a week, quite regular. When he was out of town, it was by telephone," Wogaman said, calling the process "open-ended." Clinton did close one aspect of the scandal yesterday, by paying off fines levied by a judge who held him in contempt for lying about the affair in a deposition taken by lawyers for sex accuser Paula Jones. Clinton's lawyer filed copies of letters notifying Jones' lawyers and the judge, along with copies of three certified checks totaling $90,686.05. "A lot of these people especially this is true of men, I think are still really hung up about asking for help. I know about that; that's a hard thing for men to do," Clinton said. Despite his gratitude, not all Americans have forgiven him. Since admitting he had lied about his affair and begged for the nation's mercy when his approval ratings soared polls have found growing discontent with Clinton.
