in Kampala, Uganda, Africa. We have about 400 adult members, have just started our website ministry, and we'd love to have you visit us at our website . . .
However, it is actually much bigger than the title, and it is much more than about "Building a Church-house" . . . it is
I highly recommend it to every minister in the world - from Billy Graham and Paul David Yonggi Cho to Benny Hinn and Joel Osteen, especially ministers who lack money and resources!
No minister in the world, is ready to "Rise-up and Build!" until they have read Dr. Hanning most excellent Book!

1 - INTRODUCTION
After seeing a giant structure – our Church building standing tall, the Lord spoke to me. He told me that this is just the beginning; that He wants to do greater things elsewhere using the same principles. So He told me to call men of God from around and testify to them of God's goodness.
I Tim. 2:2 : “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men…”
Immediately, I thought of the name to call such meetings. I came up with ‘FELLOWSHIP OF PASTORS WITHOUT SUPPORT FROM ABROAD’ Oh! It was a wonder. I called these men of God and they responded. God helped me to put together the points I wanted to share with them: How God can use very few people to build such a gigantic structure.
The first day of fellowship, these men of God confessed and said that it was so wonderful and they wanted another day!
The second day of fellowship, we had Pastors from distant places coming to attend this meeting. I simply continued with the points I believed caused such a great victory. I did not have the third meeting – it was time to build the House of the Lord!
The book you are holding contains the very information I passed onto them, plus more. This is God’s teachings! He wants to do a work in your Church, and even in your life, which will astound the onlookers!
" ...for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.” Habak. 1:56
I encourage you to read through to the end and be blessed. If it has worked for me, it will work for you. Welcome.
PASTOR & BISHOR DR. HANNING MUTUKIRIZA, D.Div.
TESTIMONY Kampala Bible Revelation Church
“Moreover, I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will place them and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for ever more.”
My tabernacle also shall be with them; yea, I will be their God and they shall be my people. And the heathen shall know that I the Lord do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for ever more.” Ezek iel 37:26-28
This is our covenant for ministry. So far we have seen it fulfilled in many ways. We have enjoyed peace, God has placed us and is multiplying us every day that comes.
On Sunday 8th January, 1995, about 25 people converged at Makerere University Faculty of Arts’ Lecture Hall for the first service of Kampala Bible Revelation Church. It was a great day. We made it a day of prayer and also covenanted with God to serve Him from that day forward.
God started increasing us gradually and in March 1995 we took the ‘New-Ministry Offering’ and in July 1995, we purchased land at Makerere I, Mukubira Zone. The land cost 7m/= (Seven Million Shillings). In October, 1995 we constructed a temporary shelter and shifted to our premises in December, 1995.
In March, 1996 we started building our first office-building. This was completed in November, 1996 and was dedicated by Pastor Charles Majwega who was then at Victory Christian Centre-Ndeeba.
In October, before we dedicated the offices, we started on the main Church-building – a 1000 seater. Church membership then was less than 100 people. This giant building was roofed in December, 1997. We broke down the temporary shelter, and entered our sanctuary.
Now we are glad to let every one know that the work that began, in only 3 years it was completed. This was done by less than 100 Christians. We have never held a single fund-raising, nor a music gala, nor a church-market nor borrowed from anywhere. We have never received a single donation from anywhere.
There is no dollar, nor pound, nor any other currency that has gone to that building. We have had no single support from abroad!!
In this book, I have prayerfully laid down some of the keys, which I believe have triggered this success or progress.Building a church building (a thing, which has failed so many churches,) is not in the anointing only: It's in money also!!!
As you read this giant-little book, I believe the same revelation, which flowed to us, will flow to you – God bless you.
3 - GOD’S FAITHFULNESS
Many visitors and Pastors have come to us and asked how we have been able to build such a giant structure and yet we have less than 100 believers.
Always my first answer has been “God is faithful”.
“Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it”. 1Thessalonians 5:24.
He can’t call you and not support you! If you are His - it will show! Every commission has a provision!
But this sounds rather ambiguous to some people. Because how can you explain some ministries which have wonderful men of God who appear to have been sent and yet seriously lack provisions? But sincerely speaking, when God sends a man or woman, He becomes the source.
Always the problem is that most men and women of God don’t really trust, depend and wholly rely on God’s promises for provisions.
In this Ministry, we wholly rely on God’s provisions. We teach believers to be faithful to God, to love Him as He loved us. These buildings have come from the Tithes, Offerings and pledges made by members of our Church. Man of God, I know you are highly anointed – so just tell the brethren what to do.
TELL THE MEMBERS
In the Bible – in Exodus 25:1-8 after God had given Moses and the children of Israel all the laws, He told Moses to speak to the children of Israel, that they bring an offering to the Lord, of every man that was WILLING. So it was not under duress nor pressure.
And what people were bringing, was going to be used according to the instructions of the Lord from chapter 25 up to chapter 31. Here, the Bible clearly states that the people brought more than enough and all these things were made, Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant and others.
You can see, God is faithful. He will command the people to bring. Just be bold and speak as He has instructed you. And David the King did the same. After He, himself had given abundantly towards the building of the temple – he spoke to the children of Israel and their leaders in
I Chronicles 29:5 and asked:
“And who is then WILLING to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?”
In verse 6 of the same chapter says:
“… they offered willingly, and gave for the house of God … vs 9 “then the people rejoiced for that they offered willingly…”
I remember the day we took the offering of the foundation of the Church.
> > I surrendered the best in my home and I was the first to pledge.
> > They were a T.V and a Refrigerator.
> > I gladly surrendered them, then a spirit of giving gripped everyone there.
> > Brethren gave plots of land, others fridges, while others gave their clothes and others cash.
> > Within 20 days the foundation was completed at a cost of 5 million shillings.
So the same will happen to you. Change your focus. Look up to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Your help does not come from Europe or America. You do not need any connection. Your help comes from above.
“My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth!” Psa. 121:2
Let’s change the trend that has been because so far it has not produced sufficiently. God’s faithfulness is what you need to wholly depend upon. You do not need to be pitied, instead you will be envied.
4 PASTOR’S STEWARDSHIP
Now talking about the Pastor is not something light. It should be done with a lot of caution. Leaders must be respected. They are God’s representatives – Amen.
But the development of the ministry is squarely on the shoulders of the Pastor. He is the vision bearer. He is the communicator of this vision and consequently the ultimate implemetor.
Why stewardship? Because a building is built by money.
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful”. 1 Corinthian 4:2
How money is handled is entirely upon the leader of that ministry. From church to church money is handled differently. I am talking about church money: from tithes, offerings to pledges plus financial miracles which happen to ministries at different occasions.
As a Pastor of this church I DON’T "EAT" (waste consume) THE TITHE!! Meaning I don't spend it as I want, for my own personal things.
In fact, when church offerings come in, they are recorded and distributed by the Treasury according to the priorities of Ministry. I live on allowances only, not the tithe!!! Now that we have been building, that has been the priority. So we project most of the funds to it.
Secondly, here is where stewardship comes in. I am transparent on how I spend money on this building project. I record every expenditure. I do most purchases by myself. I make sure every coin is recorded in the book. From the first day of the ministry to date every coin has been recorded.
If you are God’s servant and have a problem with the way you spend money, that’s the reason your ministry is not rising. The problem is not preaching fasting or prayer; it is stewardship. You need to prove your trust-worthiness with money. People or your church members have to trust you with money.
That is stewardship.
There are some pastors who do not pay their tithes, and then eat (Consume) the tithes that people bring! They lock up their destiny in a few shillings and blow up their ministry. That’s why the devourer comes and steals and kills and destroys.
Simply be a good steward – abundance will flow into your ministry. "He that is faithful in small things will also be faithful in much!"
At church many people bring money to my office during week days when I am alone. I record it all and forward it to the Treasurers. As a pastor I could divert these funds to serve other purposes, but this would deadly to my integrity.
God Himself would not and the people may not trust me anymore. I therefore do not divert funds. That is why all these years we have not had a single financial scandal! We have never lost money. No, not one crisis!!
I do not dress well . . . yet! My wife is not putting on the best dresses . . . yet, . . . and neither are my children – but this is very temporary. I make sure I live within the budget.
We are so happy because we are pursuing something very exciting – that’s building the house of the Lord! Be a good steward from day one and you will not need to beg.
Be a good bag (treasurer's money bag)you will not beg.
5 - PASTOR’S CHARACTER
“Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? And I will restore it you.” 1 Sam. 12:3
People wonder whether it is possible to go for years without conflict in then church with brethren. Since this ministry began, we have never had conflicted with any brother or sister. Yes, I have had to correct a brother or a sister, but I have never had a single personal conflict with a brother or a sister.
The Pastor’s character is crucial in building a ministry. Do people really trust you? Well, all may not. But there must be people to whom you appear like an angel of God.
A leader must develop a godly character. He must be trusted in these most sensitive areas:
> > the ‘Gold' (Money)
> > the ‘Girls’
> > the ‘Glory’ (power & Pride)
Most members of my church trust me with money. I have been careful and transparent. I have accounted for all the money I use. I am accountable to all men and to God. Money is very tempting if you are not disciplined in your spending.
In my church, money does not come in millions at once but from 100 Shillings (American nickel) to 1,000,000 Shillings (just under $500 American dollars), as the Lord blesses his people. It is easy to eat it as it comes in.
A pastor who has disciplined himself will keep this money and appropriate it according to priority.
We all know the story of Samson, how such a booming ministry came to a halt in the laps of a woman. It is not because he was not anointed, it is because he had no character. If rumours still go around you as a pastor involving girls and women better fight hard against it.
Now if they are false rumours – it has little effect on you spiritually – but if they are true rumours – man of God – you are blowing up your ministry. It is one thing I guard against with all my might.
> > I do not spend time just chatting with sisters
> > I do not give a ride here or there even if I am going right by their destination
> > I do not escort them to lunch or walk anywhere
> > I spiritually select the words I speak to them carefully.
I do not want to fall into the devil’s snare.
Dark hours are dangerous hours!
If you are not married, make sure you marry at the right time to the right person and cherish only that one - for life!
During counseling hours in my office - I am very cautious how I counsel a woman. Someone can say – what has that to do with building a church? Well, character is the rock of the ministry. Without character, ministry has no tomorrow.
Now how about ‘power’? I discovered from the scriptures that God brought everyone that came to our church for a purpose. So everyone has an assignment. My leadership therefore is to let each of these people lead in their gifts. I do not do everything.
I make sure I train every leader to lead maturely. Everyone almost has something to do. I am not power hungry. I do not seek the top – to be above everybody. Instead, I want to see everyone rise to the top.
Churches split because of putting premature leaders in authoritative positions.
Give a young boy car-keys – and yes, he will drive it - and soon they will call you to collect him – dead!!
To be like the leaders you need exactly, you must grow your own leaders. Train your leaders to have the character of God. This has a lot to do with building a church (if you didn’t know, you do now!).
A church where the ministers have not developed a Godly character will always have problems: some with the gold, some with the girls and some with the glory and a few with all three. It doesn't have to be you.
6 - HOW SAINTS FLOOD MINISTRY WITH MONEY
I used to think just like most do think that you need so many people to do a big thing for God like building a church. But I discovered lately that victory or success of a ministry has never been based on how big the multitude is! This is very encouraging.
“And the Lord said unto Gideon, the people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me…” Judges 7:2
Now, how do saints flood ministry with money?
Bishop David Oyedepo says [Pastor of "Winner's Chapel" - the largest Worship center in the world, almost 15 times as large as the Crystal Cathedral in Los Angeles, California, and almost 4-times as big as Joel Osteen's Church in Houston. It is in Lagos Nigeria]
“If you want money, raise men.”
This is true. I have noticed people who come to church with nothing, now possessing something. God is raising them up. My work as a pastor is to lift them higher, to feed them with knowledge and understanding.
In so doing, they respond to the ministry needs. I have no more compelled people to give than to love their God. The secret is not giving. It is loving the Lord.
So I have embarked on teachings which lead people to a closer relationship with God. I tell you, saints at our church love the Lord. You can give without loving. But you can not love without giving.
You wonder why you have taught your people about giving but they have not responded; teach them to love the Lord – it will work.Love is the main factor. Love is the platform. Love is the standard. How can people give so much from the little they have except that they love so much?
At our church only 100 faithful Christians have built a 1000 seat cathedral in just 3 years - DEBT FREE! That’s a miracle in Africa! There was no stage in the building program that we arrived at through struggle – none.
Do you know that most of my time I am in my office busy studying the word of God?
I have no time to move around to solicit funds for the building of the Lord’s house. Millions of shillings have found me in my office. I have never gone out for a single coin.
Now many brethren accuse us and say we must have foreign sources – but God and Him only knows this is not true.
You see the problem is – so very few have been able to build without getting some support from abroad, so the general opinion is that without support from abroad – you can not do anything.
These are lies of the devil.
Where do Americans get their help from? Why should God bless the Americans so that they give Ugandans?
If this were true, then he is a wicked God . . . a respecter of persons!!
However, God is NOT a respecter of persons, but rather He is faithful to all . He will supply all your needs right where you are.
Yes, there are some wonderful projects not founded from abroad, which took off well, but somewhere they slowed down and eventually halted. I do not think the problem is with the source and the people who give.
All these things concerning God's supplies are covenanted and they work just like the sun rises from the east and sets in the west. It does so everyday.
So is our source – God. He is supplying every need every day, everyday, but how we handle our resources determines whether the flow will be continuous.
Also at church, every time I meet the brethren it is my opportunity to bless them. You know that ‘blessings’ are simply commanded. These blessings bring in money.
So I always command blessings upon the works of their hands and their lives as well. This is a very powerful secret, if you will use it. Don’t condemn them just bless them.
Now when brethren bring in money and then later see what that money has done, they will bring more. The more they bring, the more things happen. If you start that chain – you will find that great achievements are registered in your ministry.
So bless your people everyday, every time. Just lift them higher. Just love them more. . . . and it will work. Have no conflict with the brethren. If you create conflict with the brethren, you will be like a man who cuts a limb on which he is standing. Don't do it.
6 - PASTOR’S READING CULTURE
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou has rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me….” Hosea 4:6
Once in a Pastors’ meeting I heard a man of God talk about this point. He said there is an old African proverb:
“If you want to hide a thing from a black man (African especially), put it in writing”.
He was trying to say that black people (including Christians) alike do not read books. So a lot has been hidden from them.
Now I, as a black Pastor in the heart of Africa, believe all this is true and it is generally due to low education of the general population. But as a man of God, you should not succumb to such prejudices.
Personally, I never read much as a youth and I never got to the University. But I got this revelation from God that information means influence.
If you lack knowledge – you are doomed - however anointed you may be.
So, I radically started reading the word of God, I went and bought books – of great men like Br. Kenneth Hagin, Br. David Oyedepo, T.L. Osborne, and Pastor Paul David Cho, plus others.
I bought big Bible concordances and started searching the word of God for truth. These books are found here in the bookshops. I am glad I have not been disappointed, nut rathr been rewarded.
A great bank of revelations flows through my spirit. Because of much study and reading the name of our ministry - ‘Bible Revelation Centre’ - is manifested, and I am so glad. How tragic it would be if no revelations flowed at all!
Through reading books of great men, I have discovered the keys that made them great. I have discovered secrets that God communicated to them. There are things you will never know until you open some pages of certain books to read.
If you are not a reader, all your teachings will be shallow. Remember, you are feeding sheep. Soon and very soon they will relocate . . . if they are starving.
Every Sunday, saints come to church with their Bibles, note-books and pens, very expectant of jotting down keys for godly life. A pastor who is not a reader will come up with the same old stuff.
In fact other men of God take up celebrities into the pulpit to tell stories because they have nothing to say. A sister or brother becomes the sermon. Such a thing has never happened to me and I vowed never to preach a sister or a brother: just the gospel!!.
That is why I do not have much time to loiter around visiting so and so. They can come to my office if they want but most of the time – almost 70% is devoted to reading. Praise God it pays.
"Now what does this has to do with building a church?" someone may ask. Well, your reading culture will produce the Holy Ghost inspired material for teaching the body of Christ, which will yield astonishing financial results all around.
People will put what you teach into practice. They will become like those great men.
7 - ASSOCIATIONS
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend”. Proverbs 27:17
“I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators”.1 Corinthians 5:9
Brethren, let me share with you about association or the company that you need. I can not overemphasize the fact that you need a good company. A company of people that will edify you, with whom you can share your dreams, people who can believe in you and can understand you.
Now there are two main promoters of a minister. ‘Books and friends’. This, I heard a man of God, Dr. David Oyedepo declare.
In my life I have taken time to select friends. I have painfully removed some friends from my life. These are people who are not edifying me. Most of the time they criticize others, they are full of gossiping. They talk negative and some of them tell lies.
The moment I find that someone has lied to me and pretends to be my friend – that’s the end of our friendship.
Also, as a Man of God, I do not have women-friends since I am a man and a minister. I have daughters in Christ, do not misunderstand me – and I love all of my people, but I have men friends.
I have chosen people and ministers who are on the move to be my friends: people who talk faith. I seek-out people who understand me, and people who have no ulterior motives -especially financial motives: i.e. they want to get money from me.
The first day I saw Pastor Offiong Uwem of the Living Faith World Outreach Centre I said: "I must befriend this man." You see I heard words which lifted me proceed from his mouth. And I tell you ever since I became a friend to the Living Faith World Outreach Centre, my life has been greatly affected.
Friends are very important. I have seen people falling into sin because of friends. I have seen pastors go wrong because they have been wrongly advised.
A friend who can not (will not) build you up is unnecessary.
I am not given money from the Living Faith World Outreach Centre, but the counsel I get from there is much more than money. Here are people (the Living Faith World Outreach Centre) who are on the move. They are powerful in the word, people of high integrity, and mean what they say.
When you walk with the wise you become wise. Also iron sharpens iron. I have found myself doing the same things those pastors do.
They say they do not eat (consume) the tithe, and so do I say this. They do not fall sick and so do I walk in health. They are not poor and so am I prospering in my labors for the Lord.
I have been sharpened by these brethren.
Recently I befriended Bishop Obokech. He is a wonderful man of God. I also have others like Pastor Charles Majwega, Pastor Serwadda and Pastor Wantaate Fred.
If you want to build a church without support from abroad, come and learn from me. I tell you it can be done. Your association with me - since I have gone through it - will guarantee you free information.
Archbishop Idahosa said one time that, if you want a hankie – you can start by planting cotton, then wait for a whole year for it to mature, then take it to the ginnery and finally to the Textile Industry. Now this takes too much time!
If you need a hankie, just go to the shop and buy it. They have been made already. You do not need to plant cotton. So it is with building a church. Come and learn the easiest way. You don't have to spend painful days in the bushes trying to figure out which principles to use to build a church.
9. UNDERSTANDING TEMPORARY SHELTERS:
What authority do I have to begin writing to the body of Christ about something that’s highly regarded almost everywhere? Big and small ministries alike of late have been so quiet about it. We normally, say, well, God sees the spiritual part of us. He’s little concerned with what goes on in the physical.
However, that statement is too general and on;y partially true. Have you ever wondered why we give a spiritual God physical money? Is it true that it’s to God we give? Yes. If you don’t believe this, check out those people who don’t pay their tithes, and see what financial crises they are going through. They are there in your Church.
I have the authority to write to you after handling this TRUTH. I have seen it, I have handled it, and now I declare it to you. It will transform your whole life, and your ministry or church. You will never be the same again in Jesus Name.
Right now as I write to you, our ministry possesses a 1000 seat church auditorium, fully builtm and finished "DEBT-FREE!" We officially opened it on Saturday 11th December, 1999. About 100 believers only built this great structure.
We did not have a single fund-raising event, no church markets, not even a single musical gala in pursuit of money. However, there are secrets we discovered from God’s word concerning building God’s sanctuary, you can call it Zion, God’s dwelling place.
From the foundation to finishing. it took us 3 years only, and great things are now happening, miracles have become the order of the day. Salvation of souls is on the increase. Heaven’s goods have invaded us. Now, in this book, get the understanding about temporary shelters.
Over the years, the gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached, proclaimed and demonstrated through signs and wonders. In our country, God has been so gracious to us in that, He has blessed us with mighty men and women who have hazarded their lives, families and even careers for the sake of the gospel.
There’s no doubt, Jesus has been lifted up. This book however, is coming from a heart that has been touched by God to emit light in a certain direction, may be that only dark spot in our ministry.
That spot is very subtly dark and quite so in disguise a very good excuse - ‘the Temporary Shelter’. All these years you had had such a wonderful ministry operating from a Temporary Shelter.
You erected that Temporary structure with an intention and a desire to build a permanent one. That’s why it’s called a temporary shelter. It means: lasting for a short time only. But what was made to serve for a short time only, has now become a ‘permanent - temporary’ thing.
What’s happening? The sole reason for all this is found in this book and much more. How shall we stand on the eternal, permanent truth when the very temporal structures are betraying us? Temporary shelters are for a short time and belong to short-term plans.
As long as the ‘temporary’ is in place, everything else remains short-term and temporary!
I have therefore prayerfully written down these few lines, with the passion for our church leaders, great men and women of God, who serve the great God. Could He have left his servants in things which are temporary? Never! That which was a shadow of things to come? In Hebrews 10:9 its written:
“Then said he, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.”
So praise God for the temporary shelter you have, but God’s plan is to establish a permanent building for your ministry, just like He did with the covenants.
Someone is wondering! What’s the big deal in Temporary shelters? Well, that’s why this book is in your hands. That you may discover the significance of building God a permanent home. Or else, even naturally, very few businesses operate from temporary shelters.
A great man of God said, “We are ambassadors of Christ, and our churches are heavenly embassies.” This means that if someone ever looks at our church buildings is able to see from the outside, the kind of God we serve.
Also,if I am to deal with a certain company or factory, normally I will have to go by myself to check out what kind of office, and machinery these people have. So when I do that I can easily tell whether these people are serious or not.
Yes, and that’s how most ministries appear to the world. As long as we operate from the temporary premises, we are simply advertising to everyone that we are here for a short time. Well, in this book I have gone deep to dig up this truth with very strong scriptural backing. I beg you to read all the way to the end.
THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND-TEMPORARY SHELTERS
10 - WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Friend, everything has a beginning. Thank God, it also has an end. Someone wonders where did these temporary shelters begin? Temporary shelters began way back in the Genesis world. In Gen. 4:20 it says:
“And Adah bare Jabel: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and of such as have cattle.”
So notice that temporary shelters are not of yesterday. They are built not because people don’t have money, or that people can’t build a permanent shelter afterwards. Jabel still in Genesis decided to start living in tents while keeping cattle.
For us we keep the sheep of the Lord. We are sheep-keepers: What a big difference? Do we need tents? Nevertheless, God appreciates tents and temporary shelters. He says through the prophet Balaam in Numbers 24:5 that,
“How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel. “
Wow! God deeply appreciated the children of Israel while in Exodus on exit from slavery. This prophet’s tongue was turned because a mad King wanted to curse Israel. The prophet simply released blessings. Israel was then living in tents, in temporary shelters because they were on their way to the promised land, where God had said in
“And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildest not, vs11:
“And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggest not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt heave eaten and be full; vs12: Then be ware lest thou
forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”
So it goes without question, on our way from Egypt, the house of bondage, tents or temporary shelters are inevitable. This is true with every successful ministry on planet today. Temporary shelters serve a wonderful purpose.
God ordained a rest for the children of Israel. This is called, the Feast of Tabernacles or Booths, from 15th to 22nd of their seventh month (October) as a thanksgiving for the harvest.
During this feast the people of Israel dwelt in booths to commemorate life in the wilderness. You can read from Levictus 2:34; Numbers 29:12 and Deut. 16:13 just for your references.
So when we talk of tents, temporary shelters or booths, God sees something temporary indeed. Something typical of the life in the wilderness. The children of Israel needed these temporary shelters because they were moving from one place to another, proceeding to the promised land.
Your temporary shelter tells you that you are yet to get to God’s precious promises. Now let’s check out God’s Tabernacles. This is God’s house in Exodus 5:1-8, God commanded the children of Israel to bring him an offering: of every man that give it willingly with his heart, offerings of blue, purple, fine linen and others precious textile and jewels in order to make a sanctuary, that God may dwell among them.
Because they were in the desert, in the wilderness. God suffered them to make a temporary shelter. It’s even logical that these people were on the move, so they needed a tabernacle they could carry from place to place. So, now, we are establishing a truth that temporary shelters are associated with people moving towards the promised land.
In the meantime, of course, the temporary shelter they made was gorgeous and elegant - but it was a temporary one still typical of a desert condition. I will come back to this point in later stage.
But God had promised these people that they would inherit great and goodly cities which they built not, and houses full of all good things (Deut. 6:10). God’s plan therefore was not to leave these people in temporary things.
Now let me bring in the point I didn’t want to begin with. We see in creation that God made man. And that this man was naked together with his wife. (Gen. 2:26)
“And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
It must be because they had been covered with God’s glory. And this glory was on condition that they kept themselves blameless and this glory was external. But in Genesis 3 when Adam and Even had fallen, in vs 7 it says:
“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked: and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”
So we gather from this scripture that the garments Adam and Eve put on immediately after the fall were temporary - leaves which dry in a matter of hours. to them, these aprons represented their fallen nature.
They were on exit from God’s goodies, abundance and security into sweating, curses and failures which have plagued the world since. Am sure you now begin to understand temporary shelter, tents and temporary garments.
They represent periods of falling like Adam they represent the period of the deserts - when the children of Israel were in transit. So these temporary structures cannot take the place of permanent structures. It’s a reflection of great compromise, if the ministry lingers on for years in make-shifts.
However beautiful they appear, the truth is: temporary shelters are temporary for a temporary purpose. From this time on, get this truth clear: that temporary shelters began a long time ago, and they will always be here. But it’s very important to note that they are structures designed for a short time indeed. So, they are no substitutes for permanent buildings.
Let me close this point with Abram who later became Abraham. He’s a man who lived in tents all his life. At the beginning of his call, he was told to go to a land of God’s choice, God promised him great blessings: to be made a great nation of him, to bless him and make his name great, and to make him a blessing plus many other guarantees, (Gen. 12:3). In Gen. 12:18 it says:
“And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the East of Betheland pitched his tent (his temporary shelter)...”
So we discover that our father of faith lived in tents. Now, let’s establish the reason for it, lest we copy him ignorantly. In Heb.11:9 it says:
“By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac, Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.”
vs.10 “For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
So Abraham was not having any problem in building permanent structure. But the one who called him, told him to walk through the land, He promised to give Abraham’s seed. Amazingly, Abraham’s mind was focused on a city built with foundations, not tents or tabernacles.
You see! That’s incredible! God never allowed Abraham to build or buy pieces of land in the promised land. If God allowed him, he would build cities because he had the capacity to do so. Abraham was not comfortable in tents.
For 100 years, he had to trust God for the safety of his wealth in tabernacles. God did so to Abraham because he had to move from place to place through the promised land. The only piece of land Abraham bought was for burying in his well-beloved wife Sarah.
Now going back to the other very important point I left off somewhere, Moses and the children build a very elegant structure to the Lord. It was made of gold, silver and very precious gems (jewels and purple textiles). Inside, the tabernacle, there was great and precious decorations which made the place look real gorgeous.
I believe we can learn something from here. That, God wants us to build real good houses of God. That, He wants to be worshipped in very good looking structures. The same truth applies for Solomon’s temple.
It’s written of it in
I Chronicles 22:5 part b ‘… and the house that’s to be builded for the Lord must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries.’
This is the reason why we have to begin disciplining our appetites and make budgets and begin building the house of God.
So friend, your future is very bright. Try and obey God this time. Declare the building project. Be courageous and very strong. Refuse to fear. Don’t give in to dream-killers and dreamer-killers.
You are too strong for them. Kill that temporary shelter mentality and move into God’s permanent blessings, which you will contact the moment you begin to build.
Let me be very clear on this point. God can’t tell a Pastor to go out and spend money in outreaches by millions, when His people are in dust. He’s not the one who gave you that mansion you are living in, when His Church is congregating in shanty structures.
That’s not prosperity.
A man of God called Leonard Ravenhill said, that revival fails to occur, because evangelism is commercialized, that the tithes of widows and of the poor are spent in luxury living by many evangelists.
The poor who think they do God service are simply keeping a big-reputationed small hearted preacher living in Hollywood style.
If God ever tells you to go out for evangelism then release the congregation to go into God’s well built places. If you need that congregation, then prepare well for it, build a structure. The days of ignorance are over.
Begin to build God’s house and He’ll take pleasure in it. A church building is God’s heavenly embassy on the earth. May be you need to seek Him on this point. It could be He wants an evangelist to have just offices for outreaches.
Even then, those offices must reflect the God of glory. They shouldn’t be shanty. Am not being materialistic but spiritually realistic. Whatever is of God is good and glorious.
11 - SOLOMON’S TEMPLE & DESERT TEMPORARY SHELTER
In Exodus 25:1-8, God commanded Moses to tell the children of Israel to offer willingly for the sanctuary which Moses was going to make, so that God would dwell among his people. This was so great.
How can such a big God dwell in such a house? Today people are so bothered by this truth. They say, God cannot be in a house, but God himself decided to dwell in a box, an ark of the covenant - amazing!!
So, back to the point - a temporary structure was erected. Call it a tabernacle or sanctuary. It was made of curtains, poles, staves, and gold and silver covered most of the wood. God instructed Moses on its size, the materials he had to use and the pictures to put in the curtains.
This great work was completed. Moses erected the Tabernacle and dedicated it to God.
In Exodus 40:32 it says:
“And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate.” So Moses finished the work. vs. 3 “Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”
vs. 35 “And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”
Amazing!! What glory!! Actually, this is a clear demonstration that God took pleasure in that sanctuary. Moses had truly followed God’s instructions. At this point, Israel was in the desert going to the promised land. And this cloud of glory hung over this tent all day and all night.
In vs 36 it says:
“And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys:” vs 37 “But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up”.
So this clearly shows us that this tabernacle was the guide to Israelites as they journeyed towards the promised land. This was for the people on the move. Now, so many children of God have erected tents which is a clear sign that they are in the desert and they are going somewhere.
Unfortunately, soon they forget that they are on a journey, they relax, they begin to renovate the temporary, they begin to think- well, this is all that God has for us. But Moses was not so. He was looking for the promised land. He was never satisfied with that glory.
He knew there was a greater glory. So he spoke about the promised land from time to time. As long as they were with that tabernacle, they kept moving. Thank God, they reached the promised land.
While in the desert people became so rebellious, from time to time revolts against Moses broke out. Many were bitten by snakes to death, fire killed some, the earth broke open and swallowed some, eventually Moses himself lost his destiny by hitting the eternal rock twice.
Why? They were in a desert. This is why children of God, you shouldn’t spend long in the temporary shelter. Moses and Israel spent 40 years in that temporary thing. Until all those above 20 years when they left Egypt perished.
Have you of late got some problems and rebellions? Well, it happened in the earliest temporary shelter. Its not that temporary shelter are bad, but when we consider what happened to those of the past, we need to take heed.
Anything temporary is temporary.
They used to carry it from place to place. It’s because they were on the move. As long as you are in a temporary shelter you are telling God that you are not settled yet. Can you expect him to release permanent blessings?
People say they build temporary structures because they have no money.
> > Then whose ministry is that?
> > If it’s God’s, then He has to provide.
> > Can He give a vision without provision?
> > Can He call you and not supply you?
> > Children of God better wake up. We have upgraded, renovated, reconditioned temporary shelters enough. Now is the time to move out of the temporary.
While in the desert, whatever they had was just enough. Everyday, they got food from heaven. They loathed the
manna , they grumbled and murmured. They wanted meat, they thirsted all because they were in the desert. You see even in your ministry, people are complaining. They are walking in lack. What they have is not sufficient. They would be provoking God’s anger.
There is no single Church in a temporary shelter that’s enjoying abundance! It’s time to rise up and move into a permanent structure. Yes, they enjoyed God’s presence, but the plagues killed so many. Yes, there are miracles but not abundance. God in the tabernacle was always angered by people’s grumbling. They were not cries of salvation but of depravation.
Now, let’s compare this Temporary shelter of Moses with Solomon’s Temple. As you know, the children of Israel finally made it to the promised land. After some good years, a man David, the great king, got an idea. It was to build a Temple - a permanent structure for God’s dwelling place. God was so happy.
In II Samuel 7:5 it says:
“Go and tell my servant David, “Thus saith the Lord, shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in”. vs 6: “Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.”
In vs 10, we see God giving David a great promise which said:
“Moreover, I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them anymore, as before time, vs 11. “And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies.”
Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. vs 16
“And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established forever before thee; thy throne shall be established forever.”
Incredible!! God was extremely delighted. Somebody shout hallelujah! So when David got an idea of building a house for God, little did he know that he was releasing blessings upon his life and his entire family plus the entire Israel which blessings could establish them forever.
God explained that He had been living in tents for a very long time!! God wondered how David got that thought! Then God released new blessings - to place and plant the people of Israel permanently. Why? Because of David’s idea to build a permanent home. God also released permanent blessings.
God said in vs 10, moreover, I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more to ‘move no more’ means to be permanent. You see this is a blessing that God had held back until they thought of building a permanent structure for God. Listen Sir, there are certain blessings you will never enjoy until you build a house of God.
God promised to plant them to move no more. God promised to plant them permanently. That meant stability, successful business, no retrenchments and failures in academics. You see! For the people of the Church to be placed permanently, a permanent building has to be in place, or else rebellions of the desert abound.
When David decided to build a house for God, God made David a house. David became an everlasting institution. God established his house and his throne. Isn’t this wonderful? Can you compare it with the desert blessings?
Brother or sister, your time for shining has come.
Begin to build God’s house.
Start building a permanent house.
After those great blessings and promises were released, God told David that his son Solomon would be the one to build this temple. Now, let’s discover what happened when Solomon built the temple of God, the first of its kind, and what glory really manifested.
In 1Kings 8:10-11 it says: “And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord."
Unbelievable!! Again we see what happened during Moses’ time in Exodus 40:34. God’s great glory was manifested. So God took pleasure in his house which Solomon had built.
Now in II Chronicles 7:1 it says:
“Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. “
Now, all this confirms the truth that God takes pleasure in his house. That glory and that fire from heaven are signs that God’s presence has surely come down. Now, someone is already saying, that there’s no difference in the manifestation of God’s glory during the time of the tabernacle of Moses and the Temple of Solomon.
I also want to discuss that very question. There's a big difference. Have you noted that apart from the glory that filled the Home, also fire from heaven fell and burnt the sacrifices of Isreal?
The glory fell double in Solomon's time. Glory and fire. Now after Solomon had built the temple, it’s written in
1 Kings 10:23:
“ So King Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom."
Aha... I believe that was not mentioned of Moses. Those people in the desert just had enough. Their shoes never grew old, nor their clothes.
In 10:27 it says:
“And the King made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycamore trees that are in the vale, for abundance."
After the building of the Temple, abundance became the vocabulary of that time.
Can you imagine silver to be made as common stones? What kind of wealth is that? The secret is in the permanent building. That wealth can’t be handled in a temporary shelter.
No wonder, not much progress is seen in tents. God has reserved special breakthroughs for those who will breakdown that which is temporary. Now, this blessing from a permanent structure, an idea which David got, made him to be the grandfather of Jesus. David, God called him a man after his own heart.
I tell you David is a "Spiritual Star!" He is the first man to get the idea of building a permanent structure (The Temple of God).
I want to share this testimony with you to show you how powerful it is to build God a sanctuary.
Our ministry had began about two years. From the beginning, I had an idea to build God a sanctuary and to spend very little time in a temporary shelter.
But at the beginning, I saw that it could not be possible since we were so few and most people were poor. So, I thought, well - in about 3 years we would begin building a church, when we have increased, when we have saved some money, when we have gathered enough strength.
I am sure the devil was laughing at me. So one Sunday of 26th October, 1996, this was our second year in ministry, a man of God was preaching in our church and said, ‘Tomorrow begin the construction of the sanctuary’. I felt literally my hair run off my head. I could not believe my ears!
The sanctuary I wanted to build was to seat 1000 people! And then we were less than 100 people!
But I believed, it was the voice of God. So, after his preaching, I told the brethren that I was surrendering my best in my house - a TV Afterwards, we decided with my wife that the refrigerator should go also. And like a wind that blew through the congregation, everyone rose up to give to God. People gave their best.
And that week we had on our account cash about 25-American cents. The work began immediately.
In 20 days, the foundation was completed. From foundation to roofing it took us 1 year. Now after three years, the work was completed, a 1000 seat, being built by 100 believers! Hallelujah!
This building which has consumed millions of shillings has been built with a modern style. This large sum of money has come solely from about 100 believers. We have never borrowed, or ever gone for a loan. We have no single support from abroad, no dollar from anywhere.
God has been faithful to his word. And God’s people have prospered, increased and peace reigns in our Church. If we have done it, you also can.
12 - GOD’S ULTIMATE PLAN FOR YOUR MINISTRY
Now Friend, I want to share with you about God’s ultimate plan. His perfect will. Something that He will look at and say, ‘It’s very good!' I doubt it’s a temporary shelter.
At the beginning of creation, God said, and there was a manifestation of that thing He said. He always saw that it was good. Check out Gen. 1:4, 10,12, 18,21,25,31. All these verses end with “.... it was good”.
When God created light, He saw it that it was good in verse 4.
“Then God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he seas; and God saw that it was good. “
This is verse 10. Let me go to verse 31. It says, 'And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold it was very good.'
Now this shows God’s very powerful principle. It is: ALL THAT GOD MAKES IS GOOD. That’s a very powerful principle. A principle is a law that can’t be broken forever.
Now, I know that Temporary shelters are good to start with. But God’s will is that you move from the Temporary to the Permanent.
God’s other principle is in Job 8:7 - it says,
“Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase”.
You see, this means no matter how that temporary shelter looks like, your latter end God expects you to increase. That’s a very great principle. God has designed every ministry like this.
You may be small now, with very few people, but in that ministry there are seeds of greatness.
Your ministry will increase. Now, let me go on to the truth concerning God’s ultimate plan for your ministry. I want you to know that the scriptures are very clear about it. If God’s principle is that whatever He does is good, then every God ordained ministry will manifest in this principle as well. In Isaiah 2:2 it says ;
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills , and all the nations shall flow into it.”
Look at God’s plan here. He has determined to exalt the mountain of the Lord’s House above everything. Notice God says ‘the Lord’s House’ not ‘the Lord’s Temporary Shelter’. Clearly, God sees a permanent building, a House that’s permanent.
In Ps. 125:1 it’s written that mount Zion abides forever, so a House that cannot be moved is not a temporary one . God wants to see a permanent House for your ministry. And that’s what He has spoken. But now God is wondering why in the world his House is not manifesting as He has spoken.
In Genesis, whatever He commanded appeared forthwith, but now the story appears to be different. God help us in this rebellion!!! So, according to God’s plan, his House and the mountain on which it is, shall be exalted above everything.
Another scripture that reveals His plan for your ministry is Matt. 16:18. Jesus said,
“... and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Now, this is great.
Of course, He’s talking about His church of a body of believers, and not a building. But in this very scripture we discover that if He can build a body of believers so strong for the devil to handle, then building a permanent structure is very easy. Don’t you see that? These believers are those who hear and do what Jesus says. In Matt. 7:24 he said, such people are like a wise man who built his home on the rock and the floods, the wind could not break down the house.
Now notice in all these scriptures that the word house - permanent building is underscored. Jesus has no vision for temporary things at all. The very words He spoke are forever. He said that heaven and earth will pass away but His words will never pass away. Jesus loves permanent things. So God’s ultimate plan for your ministry is for you to move from temporary things into permanent ones.
Let’s check out in the book of
Mark chapter 14 verse 13 to 15 it says:
“And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. and wheresoever he shall go in, say he to the goodman of the house, the master saith, where is the guest chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.”
Now this scripture confirms the fact that Jesus wants good things. Have you seen that LARGE UPPER ROOM FURNISHED AND PREPARED? Now, why didn’t they go to a Kiosk on the suburbs of Jerusalem? He told his disciples to go to the city where there are beautiful buildings.
So Jesus loves good buildings not temporary shelters, and His glory is ready to manifest in wonderfully built places of his children. Now, someone will say, that for Jesus to manifest his glory in wonderfully built places it means that in these religious cathedrals his glory is greatly manifested.
No, I didn’t just generalize. He has to build a spiritual church first like He said to Peter, and then the physical one follows. I think that is logical.
God has beautiful things.
In Psalm 48:2 it says: Beautiful for situation, the Joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
Here God is not talking about heaven. His talking about a place here on earth, where His home was built. He looked at it and said, beautiful for situation. It means people - those vision bearers took time to build it wonderfully for God to dwell in.
Now, you know that God is the same, He never changes. Even today, He wants to see your church and say, beautiful for situation.
In the same Psalm of 48, verse 12 to 13 it says:
“Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof. Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces: that ye may tell it to the generation following, so they do the same thing.”
So it’s more than convenience it’s a commandment. You see that! Till today, we remember how wonderfully decorated Solomon’s Temple was.
We remember David’s very gorgeous tabernacle. The fact is there were towers and great buildings not just a temporary shelter.
So because it was so beautiful.
God said in Ps. 50:2 - 3 that ,
“Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.”
Glory to God!! Look at that manifestation of God’s glory. When your ministry begin to manifest the beauty, for the Lord, He will begin to shine from that ministry in a very special way. He will come and shine in it as the scripture has confirmed.
Also in Psa. 87:2 God says,
“The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee.”
You see because it was wonderfully built, it’s beautiful. God came to dwell in it. All I am labouring to do is to show you that no matter what, God’s ultimate objective for your ministry is to have wonderfully built buildings and that temporary structures are not his best desire.
Now, in Psalm 78:9 it says,
“And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established forever.”
So God, is committed to build his church, if you only let him. He is going to build it like high palaces - tremendous!!
Can you imagine a church looking like a palace?
That’s what pleases God. His sanctuary to be like a palace!! Then his children will be Kings and Queens, princes and princesses, in Gods palace.
I would like you to know that God has no less than a high palace for you. It’s time to do all it takes to build for the Lord a House. One that looks like a high palace according to the Holy Scriptures.
I would like to close with this scripture of
Isaiah 28:16, it says:
“Therefore, thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”
Now, this is a very powerful scripture. It’s telling about Christ. He’s the stone laid in Zion for a foundation. He’s the cornerstone, he’s our standard. If we are to do anything, we have to consult him. Just like builders consult architectural plans, and lay up cornerstones for the building, so have we Christ Jesus.
Jesus is the sure foundation.
So, whatever you need to do, the work has been made easy. Laying a foundation is the hardest, tidiest work ever. But now we have Christ as our foundation. I see you begin to build in a powerful way. Since He’s the foundation, he’ll take care of the expenses. You don’t need to borrow, you don’t need to make a church market.
People will come to eat those things and then fail to pay at the end of the day. Just tell God’s people of the project so persuasively that they get convinced. God will take care of the rest. I have written this book in which I have disclosed some secrets about building.
Read it and see how it’s very possible to build a church building without any support from abroad. Jesus our cornerstone is just enough to build. He doesn’t need any abroad support. May the Lord bless you as you begin to understand God’s ultimate plan for your ministry.
It’s not enough to dress well.
We should build our churches and make them very beautiful. Then God will begin to shine from them and He will win the whole world to himself.
Let me end with this powerful fact. Have you ever asked yourself a question why almost all shrines are constructed with temporary material, reeds and grass or papyrus?
Everywhere you go, shrines (masabo) are in temporary shelters. So they are typically temporal. Let’s make a difference now. Our churches are not shrines.
Arise and build a house for the Lord. In Haggai 2:9 it says;
“The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, SAITH THE LORD OF HOSTS: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.”
In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ!
