FIGURES of SPEECH in BIBLE:

(MOST COMMON ONES)

How does God Express Himself to His Humanity?

Symbolism, Idioms and Figures of Speech in the Bible!

[How to read an “Ancient Near-Eastern Book” with a “Modern Western Mind”]

ALL MUST REALIZE: GOD MEANS WHAT HE MEANS!

Words almost never "carry or communicate" their technical definition, the "denotation" only. It is almost impossible to find s SINGLE PARAGRAPH in any newspaper or magazine - or hear commentary on a news broadcast - that does not make use of "nuance" and or "connotation".

 1. God does NOT say TECHNICALLY what He means!
 2. God does NOT mean TECHNICALLY what He says!
 3. God DOES COMMUNICATE in common language of people to whom He is addressing!
 4. THUS... God MEANS, EXACTLY WHAT HE MEANS!

SIMPLE EXAMPLES:

[1] "Do not strain at gnats and swallow camels"

 • is neither about gnats nor camels.

[2] "Don't cast your pearls before swine"

 • is not about pigs or pearls either one!

[3] "Get the log out of your eye before getting the speck in someone else's eye!

 • is not about speck and logs!

[4] "Being as wise as serpents and harmless as doves,

 • is not about serpents and doves!

[5] Behold! you shall tread upon serpents and scorpions!

 • is not about serpents or scorpions!

[6] Jesus separating the sheep from the goats,

 • is not about sheep or goats!

[7] When Jesus said: “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; John 6:51

 • He was not talking about making literal bread out of His dried, ground up flesh!

[8] So Jesus said “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh,

[9] and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.

 • is neither about literal flesh, blood or human life!

[10] Jesus said: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

 • is neither about consuming Christ's literal flesh, blood to have eternal life,
 • OR... to make the resurrection!

BONUS!

The wall, around the New Jerusalem, is it really a WALL? And if so, is it really 1500 miles high? (Our breathable atmosphere is barely 5 miles!!!),

And you may want to ask yourself: WHY DOES THE ETERNAL CITY HAVE A WALL AT ALL? . . . This is Revelation 22! The great White Throne Judgment is over, the SAVED are with Christ in the Eternal City forever, and the DAMNED are cat across the GREAT GULF FIXED that NO ONE CAN PASS FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER! (Luke 16)

 • [A] Is the WALL . . . keeping the RESURRECTING SAINTS from escaping Heaven to proceed to HELL-FIRE, bored to infinity with all the floating on clouds singing Amazing Grace after millions of years?
 • OR . . . just in case people do escape from the LAKE OF FIRE,
 • [B] IIs the WALL . . . to make sure the VILEST OF SINNERS don't sneak over the wall and into the HOLY CITY in case they do find a way to CROSS THE GREAT GULF after a few million years???

Consider just a couple of a multitude of English examples, . . . and IMAGINE a person in ANY NATION in the world, learning English, . . . and interpreting the following EXACTLY as the dictionaries define them to be!

 • >> I'm happy and gay!
 • >> I'm happy but not gay at all!

Consider the insanity,

 • >> Till and UNtil mean the same, the UN changes nothing.
 • >> To and UNto mean the same, the UN changes nothing.
 • >> But tie and UNTie are opposites, the UN changes everything!

Imagine using a standard dictionary of the last 200 years to define

 • >> Knocked up!
 • >> Knocked down!
 • >>> Wondering why 'knocked up' is NOT the opposite of 'knocked down'?

Consider:

 • The phrase "it's all down hill from there"
 • It Can have Opposite meanings:
 • It all got easier after that: had it made, etc;
 • or, It all fell apart after that,]

Consider:

 • Are you a "reckless" driver or "wreckless" driver?

Consider:

 • >> House burned up!
 • >> House burned down!
 • >>> Why do opposite words carry the same meaning?

Consider:

 • >> She's really hot!
 • >> She's really cool!
 • >> She's really tuff!
 • >> She's really bad!
 • >> She's really fine
 • >>> All meaning about the same thing, but NONE of them meaning as the etymology, derivation, usage over time, and dictionaries SAY they should mean.

Consider:

 • >> Her face makes time stand still!
 • >> Her face would stop a clock!
 • >>> How can one be a compliment and the other an insult when literally and literary speaking they are EXACTLY the same!

Consider:

 • >> "I'm gonna take her out!"
 • >>> This can be a "term of endearment, meaning of true love!"
 • >>> This can equally be a threat, and assault on one's life!
 • >>>> Yet they are the EXACT same words and same sentence structure!

For all of them above and hundreds below - NONE of them mean as the etymology, derivation, usage over time, and dictionaries SAY they should mean.

Dear Bible Christian friend!

Much of our understanding of spiritual things comes from a "titled expert" (who knows much, but NOT nearly enough) who tells people over and over: "JUST INTERPRET THE BIBLE LITERALLY!"

Scan quickly through the following cliches and IMAGINE a person in ANY NATION in the world, learning English, and interpreting the following EXACTLY as the dictionaries define them to be!

Then realize ALL languages and cultures have multitudes of sayings, cliches, proverbs and "figures of Speech" - and that includes HEBREW and GREEK having

 1. >> connotation and nuance,
 2. >> proverb and cliche,
 3. >> symbolism and slang,
 4. >> hyperbole and rhetoric,
 5. >> euphemism and simile,'
 6. >> and a host of other literary constructs that will only complicate the issue for most!

Here's the GREAT MYSTERY!

We all easily and without thinking recognize the following as "figures of speech, not being literal, but having a much deeper meaning that is REAL, SERIOUS an TRUE!

Even Jesus did not SAY what he meant nor MEAN what He said!

 1. [1] "Do not strain at gnats and swallow camels" - is neither about gnats nor camels.
 2. [2] "Don't cast your pearls before swine" - is not about pigs or pearls either one!
 3. [3] "Get the log out of your eye before getting the speck in someone else's eye! - is not about speck and logs!
 4. [4] "Being as wise as serpents and harmless as doves" - is not about serpents and doves!
 5. [5] Behold! you shall tread upon serpents and scorpions! - is not about serpents or scorpions!
 6. [6] Jesus separating the sheep from the goats, - is not about sheep or goats!
 7. [7] When Jesus said: “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; John 6:51 - He was not talking about making literal bread out of His dried, ground up flesh!
 8. [8] So Jesus said “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh, is neither about literal flesh nor human life and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you - is neither about literal flesh, blood or human life!
 9. [9] Jesus said: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day - is neither about consuming Christ's literal flesh, blood to have eternal life, OR... to make the resurrection!
 10. A camel going through a needle's eye compared to a a rich man entering into heaven, has nothing to do with camels or needles!

Consider the following:

 1. Wolf in sheep's clothing
 2. Satan as a Red Dragon
 3. God holding us in His Hand
 4. He that has ears to hear, let him hear; is not about "real ears"
 5. If the blind lead the blind is not ONLY for the literally sight-blind!
 6. Moon will not turn to literal blood,
 7. Moon will not cease to shine, as it doesn't shine anyway, it only reflects.
 8. Sun with not turn into literal sack cloth
 9. Satan as roaring lion
 10. Jesus as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah,

Absolute Cliches not as Common as those Mentioned:

We recognize these without even thinking about it for a second, and interpret them just as easily! However, many other "figures of speech of Scripture are NOT so easy to recognize . . . and NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE . . . every one in the whole Bible.

Here are just a few ABSOLUTE BIBLE CLICHES as sure as "straining gnats and swallowing camels" . . . that you may NOT recognize (with hundreds more examples below);

 1. "coming with clouds" - literally meant the coming storm of judgement like dark storm clouds in the desert Middle East where it seldom rains, and there is seldom a cloud in the sky. Coming with clouds has NOTHING to do with literal clouds, and has everything to do with judgement!)
 2. "high as the horses bit" - simply a phrase they used like English use "higher a kite!" or "sky-high!"
 3. "ten-thousand times ten-thousands" - not EXACTLY 10,000 x 10,000, but a phrase meaning almost unlimited, like we English use "must a been a zillion of them!")
 4. Don't let the Sun go down on your wrath is not about Sun going down upon a thing.
 5. A drop in the bucket, (Isa 40:15) is not literally, but meaning almost nothing by comparison! (We English still use this one!)
 6. A sodomite (Gen 19) doesn't mean someone from Sodom but a homosexual male!
 7. A dog, (Deut 23:18) does not always mean a "four-legged human canine companion", but can be a but a male homosexual prostitute! [SOURCE: Strong's Lexicon #H3611 - "keleb" used 32 times in KJV]
 8. When the Moon turns to blood" or
 9. The Sun turns to sackclothe" or both at the same time. Jews used this phrase as a day or event of great sorrow or hopelessness.
 10. The Stars Jesus holds in His Right hand are not stars we see in the sky as centers of solar systems!
 11. Neither do literal stars fall to the Earth when Christ returns!
 12. Neither doe John the Revelator literally eat a scroll...
 13. ... that is tasty in his mouth...
 14. ... and nasty in his stomach!
 15. The wall, around the New Jerusalem, is not 1500 miles high (Our breathable atmosphere is barely 5 miles!!!), and you may want to ask yourself: WHY DOES THE ETERNAL CITY HAVE A WALL AT ALL? . . . [A] Is it keeping the RESURRECTING SAINTS from escaping, OR . . . [B] just in case people do escape from the LAKE OF FIRE, is it to make sure the VILEST OF SINNERS don't sneak over the wall and into the HOLY CITY???

MAJOR IMPORTANCE!

Consider the following as prophesied to occur by the ministry of Jesus.

***** Your understanding of what these mean, determine your view of the success or failure of Christianity . . . and your Christian World View . . . as well as how you see the future of the entire world and consummation of history!

 1. Every mountain shall be made low (not about mountains!)
 2. Every hill shall be made low (not about hills!)
 3. Every valley shall be filled (not about valleys!)
 4. Every crooked way shall be made straight, (not about crooked roads!)
 5. Every rough shall be made smooth (not about rough terrain or roads!)

The five statements above above have NOTHING to do with mountains, valleys, crooked or rough roads! Since these thing are what Jesus was prophesied to do . . .you really need to know what they mean!

Consider also:

 1. >> The house of the Lord is NOT a building!
 2. >> The sanctuary of the Lord is NOT a building!
 3. >> The Church Jesus is building (constructing) is NOT a building!
 4. >> Christians are not lights!
 5. >> We Christians are not a real city on a hill (mountain in the Greek), so what does this mean?
 6. >> That the "Gates of Hell" shall not prevail against the Church is not about REAL Gates in a CITY WALLS . . . so what is it! (ALL that is evil and sinful - from Governments to Terrorist SHALL NOT withstand the ONSLAUGHT of the Gospel!)
 7. >> The Sword in Christ's mouth is NOT a metal sword you could use to cut corn with!
 8. >> The Word of God as the Sword of the Lord is also NOT a corn cutter!
 9. >> So when Christ "slays" the nations with the "sword" that cometh out of His mouth . . . This is the POWER of HIS SPIRIT-ANOINTED GOSPEL - HIS INFALLIBLE WORD . . . absolutely BREAKING DOWN ALL of Hell's Gates and Walls and CONQUERING ALL!

Consider also!

>> Is there any symbolism in hell-fire? Why did King David - the Greatest King - of whom Jesus is his Son and said David had a Heart after His own: - why did David go to hell?

"For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." Psalm 16:10

"For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell." Psalm 86:13

(David Actually made six references to his soul not STAYING in hell!)

 • >> The supreme example is that of Jesus, whose "soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption" (Acts 2:31)

MASTER LIST

BIBLICAL TASK AT HAND:

How does Almighty God communicate “Divine Thoughts and Heavenly Concepts” to human minds of dust and ashes?

GOD! The ultimate in logic and reasoning of His Supreme Intelligence, to incredibly biased, stubbornly proud & willfully blind Ignorant, finite, human minds, using ONLY Humanities’ faulty language, vocabulary, grammar and concepts?

Most Evangelical, Fundamental, Pentecostal; Bible-Believing, Old-Fashioned, Born-Again, Heaven & Hell, Sin & Salvation, Repentance & Righteousness, No-Nonsense Christians . . . take great pride in claiming they believe the Bible literally.

They claim they believe:

 • The Bible means exactly what it says, and says exactly what it means!
 • So don’t add anything to it . . .
 • . . . and don’t take anything away from it. . .
 • Therefore, take the Bible Literally, for EXACTLY what it says, is EXACTLY how it is!

This all seems good and sounds well, but as you may expect, a complex God, whose intelligence is as far above our intelligence as the heavens are above the Earth, presents some rather awesomely divine, and eternally complex concepts, and is forced by human limitations in language and vocabulary to use many similes, allegories, metaphors & hyperbole,

- including animal traits and instincts comparing Believers to sheep, non-believers to goats, enemies of the church as wolves, with “hogs-returning to the mire" and “dogs returning to their vomit”, to be s shrewd as serpents, harmless as doves, etc., - and even examples from the plant life, the business world, nature, farming, human nature, familial behaviors and cultural universals.

God Does Mean EXACTLY What HE Says!

 1. However, He Didn’t SAY in the Least what You THOUGHT He MEANT.
 2. You only thought what He said, is what He meant.
 3. It’s NOT about what He SAID, . . . it’s ALL about what He MEANT by what He said!

Consider the Jewish Phrase: "To wash your feet in the blood of your enemies!"

So before you continually telling everyone you interpret and believe the WORD OF GOD LITERALLY, answer the following questions:

 9. and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you - is neither about literal flesh, blood or human life![9] Jesus said:

[] David Psalm 18 - "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

"The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears" (verses 4-6).

"The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry.

Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him — the dark rain clouds of the sky" (verses 7-11).

"The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of breath from your nostrils. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.

They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me" (verses 15-18).

Hosea 12:10 says some of the prophecies were given as parables, that is, in figurative language:

"I spoke to the prophets, gave them many visions and told parables through them."
