The object of "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" was to give a brief history of persecution from the New Testament to the preset time.

He began with martyrdom of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth in the Gospels; Deacon Stephen and Apostle James in the Book of Acts, then followed the recorded events to the current age.

Please know that in greatest probability, that the vast majority of Martyrs are unknown except to God, and are not recorded in history as Jesus stated in declaring their "Righteous Blood from Abel to His Own.

John Foxe recorded the History of martyrs to his age of 1830, . . . which was the "BIRTH of the SECOND GREAT AWAKENING" in the English-Speaking world.

It is not known, whether Foxes Book of Martyrs inspired "The SECOND GREAT AWAKENING" or the "The SECOND GREAT AWAKENING" inspired Foxe to write the history of the martyrs . . .

. . . but surely they are connected!

It seems, Foxes Book of Martyrs inspired "The SECOND GREAT AWAKENING"

. . . Which Great Peace-&-Prosperity produces "LUKEWARMNESS - that is LOSS of FIRST LOVE, LOSS of URGENCY-&-FERVENCY, LOSS of Willingness to SACRIFICE, LOSS of EVANGELISM . . .

When this historian was young (1950's) it was not known of any Baptist Church but what trained Soul-Winners and went Soul-Winning every week as faithfully as Sunday Morning Preaching!

By AD-2,000, one was doing well to find one Baptist Church within 100 miles that still trained Soul-Winners and went out Two-by-Two as faithfully as their Sunday Morning "Sermonette."

(Many female martyrs were abused sexually before being killed. Such practice caused evil men to gravitate toward the very young Christians. Some were killed with nursing babies in their arms!)

CHAPTER 1 - CHRISTIAN MARTYRS FIRST CENTURY:

The history of the church may almost be said to be a history of martyrs and persecution experienced at the hands of wicked men.

At one time, persecution as waged against the friends of Christ, was confined to those without; at another, divisions have arrayed brethren of the same name against each other, and scenes of cruelty and woe have been exhibited within the sanctuary, rivaling in horror the direst cruelties ever inflicted by pagan or barbarian fanaticism.

This, however, instead of implying any defect in the gospel system, which breathes peace and love only portrays in bolder colors the deep and universal depravity of the human heart.

Pure and unsophisticated morality, especially when attempted to be inculcated on mankind, as essential to their pre-serving an interest with their Creator, have constantly met with opposition.

It was this which produced the premature death of John the Baptist. It was the cutting charge of adultery and incest, which excited the resentment of Herodias, who never ceased to persecute him, until she had accomplished his destruction.

The same observation is equally applicable to the Jewish doctors, in their treatment of our blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In the sudden martyr of John the Baptist, and the crucifixion of our Lord, the history of Christian martyrdom must be admitted to commence.

From that as a basis for the subsequent occurrences, we now fairly trace the origin of that hostility, which produced a lavish an effusion of Christian blood, and led to so much slaughter of the progressive state of Christianity.

As it is not our business to enlarge upon our 8aviour's history, either before or after his crucifixion, we shall only find it necessary to remind our readers of the discomfiture of the Jews by his subsequent resurrection.

Though one apostle had betrayed him; though another had denied him, under the solemn sanction of an oath; and though the rest had forsaken him, unless we may except "the disciple who was known unto the high-priest;" the history of his resurrection gave a new direction to all their hearts, and, after the mission of the Holy Spirit, imparted new confidence to their minds.

The power with which they were endued emboldened them to proclaim His name, to the confusion of the Jewish rulers, and the astonishment of Gentiles proselytes.

Deacon #1, Stephen, Martyr:

Deacon Stephen suffered the next in order. His death occasioned by the faithful manner in which he preached the gospel to the betrayers and murderers of Christ.
[He preached at the Temple that Christ would return to destroy the Temple and Jerusalem very soon, within that generation!]

To such a degree of madness were they excited, that they cast him out of the city and stoned him to death. T

he time when he suffered is generally supposed to have been at the passover a year after our Lord's crucifixion and ascension, the following spring.

Upon this a great persecution was raised against all who professed their belief in Christ as the Messiah, or as a prophet.

We are immediately told by Luke that ''there was a great persecution against the church, which was at Jerusalem;" and that "they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.'' (Acts 8:1-4),

2,000 with Deacon Nicanor:

About two thousand Christians, with Nicanor, one of the seven Deacons, suffered martyrdom during the "persecution which arose about Stephen."

James Brother of John:

The next martyr we meet in Acts was James son of Zebedee, elder brother of John, a relative of our Lord through his mother Salome who was cousin to Mother Mary, [thought to be about ten years after the death of Stephen, that the second martyrdom took place].

No sooner had King Herod Agrippa been appointed governor of Judea, than, with a view to ingratiate himself with them, he raised a sharp persecution against the Christians, and determined to make an effectual blow, by striking at their leaders.

The account given us by an eminent primitive writer, Clemens Alexandrinus, ought not to be overlooked;

that, as James was led to the place of martyrdom, his accuser was brought to repent of his conduct by the apostle's extraordinary courage and undauntedness,. . .

. . . and fell down at his feet to request his pardon, professing himself a Christian, and resolving that James should not receive the crown of martyrdom alone.

Hence they were both beheaded at the same time. Thus did the first apostolic martyr cheerfully and resolutely receive that cup, which he had prophesied by our Saviour he was ready to drink.




Deacons #2 & #3: Timon and Parmenas:

Timon and Parmenas suffered martyrdom about the same time; the one at Philippi, and the other in Macedonia. These events took place A. D. 44.

Apostle Phillip:

Philip--Was born at Bethsaida, in Galilee and was first called by the name of "Disciple." He labored diligently in Upper Asia, and suffered martyrdom at Heliopolis, in Phrygia. He was scourged, thrown into prison, and afterwards crucified, A.D. 54. Philip also preached in Syria).

Matthew:

Whose occupation was that of a toll-gatherer, was born at Nazareth. He wrote his gospel in Hebrew, which was afterwards translated into Greek by James the Leas.

The scene of his labors was Parthia, and Ethiopia, in which latter country he suffered martyrdom, being slain with a halberd in the city of Nadabah, A. D. 60.

James the Just:

This James was the half-brother of our Lord, who wrote the first document of the New Testament - "James" - and led the Church at Jerusalem until his terrible death in the days of Caesar Nero.
***[A MOST IMPORTANT NOTE ASIDE BELOW: Please see that "bishops" (in this case James the Just) were elected by the pastors and elders with any prophets and apostles of the city, and voted upon by the whole church, . . .

. . .just as the decisions of Acts 15 regarding Circumcision, making the law mandatory for salvation, etc.; Acts 15:22]

James the Just was elected to the oversight of the churches of Jerusalem; and was the author of the epistle ascribed to James in the sacred canon. At the age of ninety-four he was beat and stoned by the Jews; and finally had his brains dashed out with a fuller's club.

[A further note says James was first taken to the pinnacle of the Temple and cast off to plunge to the stone pavement below.

It did not kill him.

Batted, bleeding and dying, James began crawling into the Temple that he might die praying at the Holy Altar. The killers did not allow.

They beat James in the head with a "hammer" (fuller's club) literally dashing his brains on the Temple floor:

Thus Christ's Matthew 24 prophecy was being fulfilled that they would beat, stone and kill . . . THINKING they were doing God a service!]

Matthias;

Matthias, of whom less is known than of most of the other disciples, was elected to fill the vacant place of Judas.

Matthias was martyred - stoned at Jerusalem and then beheaded - after preaching the Gospel in Ethiopia.

Andrew:

Andrew--Was the brother of Peter. Andrew preached the gospel to many Asiatic nations; but on his arrival at Edessa he was taken and crucified on a cross, the two ends of which were fixed transversely in the ground.

Hence the derivation of the term, St. Andrew's Cross.

Andrew labored in the Gospel Ministry in Sythia, North of the Red Sea, what is today called Russia.

Mark

Mark--Was born of Jewish parents of the tribe of Levi. He is supposed to have been converted to Christianity by Peter, whom he served as a disciple, and under whose instruction he wrote his Gospel in the Greek language.

Mark established a great, great Ministry center at Alexandria - which stood the test of time better than Jerusalem, Antioch, Ephesus, Rome or any Corinthian city. Sadly, however, that did not prevent persecution by Caesars.

Mark was dragged by horse (or camel) through the city streets until his body was torn to pieces. Yet barely alive, the people of Alexandria with great solemnity, ending his life at the monument of Serapis their idol!

Peter:

Peter--Among many other saints, the blessed apostle Peter was condemned to death, and crucified upside down, as some do write, at Rome.

Albeit some others, and not without cause, do doubt the place of his crucifixion.

Hegesippus saith that Nero sought matter against Peter to put him to death; which, when the people perceived, they entreated Peter with much ado that he would flee the city.

Peter, through their importunity at length persuaded, prepared himself to flee, but, coming to the gate of the city, . . .

. . . Peter saw the Lord Christ come to meet him, to whom Peter, while worshiping, said: "Lord, whither dost Thou go?"

To whom Jesus answered and said, "I am come again to be crucified."

By this, Peter, perceiving his suffering to be understood, returned into the city to his own crucifixion.




Historian and celebrated Church Scholar Jerome saith that he was crucified, his head being down and his feet upward, himself so requiring, because he was (he said) unworthy to be crucified after the same form and manner as the Lord was.

Apostle Paul;

PauPaul, the apostle, who before was called Saul, after his great travail and unspeakable labors in promoting the Gospel of Christ, suffered also in this first persecution under Nero.

Abdias, declareth that under his execution Nero sent two of his esquires, Ferega and Parthemius, to bring him word of his death.

They, coming to Paul, found him instructing the people, desired him to pray for them, that they might believe. Paul told them that shortly after they should believe and be baptized at His sepulcher.

This done, the soldiers came and led him out of the city to the place of execution, where he, after his prayers made, gave his neck to the sword.

Jude:

Jude - The full brother of James and half brother of Christ, was commonly called Thaddeus. Thaddeus-Jude was crucified at Edessa, A.D. 72, after having preached the gospel in Egypt for decades.

Bartholomew

Bartholomew--Preached in several countries, and having translated the Gospel of Matthew into the language of India, he propagated it in that country.

He was at length cruelly beaten and then crucified by the impatient idolaters. Barthomew also preached in Armenia, the first full nation to become a Christian nation.

Thomas

Thomas--Called Didymus, preached the Gospel in Parthia and India, where exciting the rage of the pagan priests, he was martyred by being thrust through with a spear. Thomas had also preached in Persia and the East Indies.

Luke:

LuketThe evangelist, was the author of the Gospel which goes under his name, as the Gospel of Paul and Barnabas. Luke traveled with Paul through various countries, and is said to have been hanged to death on an olive tree, by the idolatrous priests of Greece.

Simon the Zealot:

Simon - Surnamed Zelotes (Zealot), preached the Gospel in Mauritania Africa, (far-west Africa, west of Lybia and Algiers, and south thereof).

Mauritiana being a sea coast nation involved in slave trading, Simon the Zealot even went to Britain (some records say before AD-50), in which latter country Simon was crucified, A.D. 74.

Apostle John;

John the disciple was brother to James the Great.

The churches of

(1) Ephesus where he was Bishop, the rest he founded and they were under his "bishopric" (the geographic area where a Bishop is elected to have authority - See Acts 1:20-22)

(2) Smyrna,

(3) Pergamos,

(4) Thyatira,

(5) Sardis,

(6) Philadelphia,

(7) Laodicea;

These seven churches were the seven John addressed in the Revelation; were founded by him. From Ephesus where he was Bishop - he was ordered to be sent to Rome, where it is affirmed he was cast into a cauldron of boiling oil.

He escaped by miracle, without injury. Since he did not die, it was perceived 'the gods' were with him and he was set free, upon which he returned to Ephesus as Bishop.

At least one time, John preached the Gospel of Christ in an evangelistic "crusade" at a little Island off the coast and took them the Word of God. (As we read in the Revelation 1: 10-12).

It was during one of these crusades - no doubt while he was i much prayer and fasting - that God gave him the Revelation of Jesus Christ to SHOW HIM things that must SHORTLY COME TO PASS!

He was the only apostle who escaped a violent death.

Barnabas;

Barnabas was of the Island of Cyprus, but of Jewish descent, his death is supposed to have taken place about A.D. 73. Barnabas was stoned to death by Jews in Salonia.

Sadly, it was never recorded that he and Apostle Paul ever saw each other, spoke, or communicated by letter after their dispute in Acts 17.




Several of Paul's Converts - Aristarchus, Trophimus, etc., were martyred in a later persecution covered in the next chapter.
