Standing in the delivery room, the neonatologist and I awaited the birth of a preemie. Soon a little girl entered the world without a cry. Unlike most of the deliveries I attended, which required intensive-care intervention, she needed only to be kept warm---for little Rachel had no brain.

Her parents had been told early in the pregnancy that there was nothing that could be done. For two days after her birth, she never left their arms. She died a peaceful death.

That was ten years ago, and I will never forget how touched I was by the love of Rachel's parents and others like them. For several years I worked as a registered nurse and dealt with many painful situations. I never dreamed one day I would have to face the silent birth of a child of my own.

I am married to United States Senator Rick Santorum, who in 1996 led the debate on a bill to ban partial-birth abortion---which even several pro-choice senators refer to as "infanticide".

The procedure is justified by its advocates as necessary in cases of fetal abnormalities detected late in pregnancy. They implied that Rick had no right to speak on the issue because it had not not touched his life.

One week later at a routine sonogram, the 20 week old baby in my womb was diagnosed with a defect that is always fatal without surgery. Through our immense heartache came the most basic of parental emotions: We had to save our child.

After many tests it was determined our son was eligible for the operation that could save his life. It was a success, but an infection developed in the amniotic sac, and I was rushed to the hospital with a high fever, having contractions.

I begged the doctors to stop my labor, but they said it would be malpractice, for I would surely die since these infections are untreatable.

Gabriel Michael Santorum was born at 12:45 AM on Friday, October 11, 1996. He was a beautiful boy. He did not give a cry or open his tiny eyes. We baptized him, bundled him, and held him ever so close.

We sang to him, held his little hands and kissed him. Gabriel lived for two hours. In those two hours something simple but profound happened. Rick and I became parents to a newborn baby and welcomed him into our family.

That was all....but it was everything. His life was so brief, yet his impact so great. In two hours we experienced a lifetime of emotions.

Love, sorrow, regret, joy----all were packed into that brief span. To have rejected that experience would have been to reject life itself.

Throughout the debate in Congress, a single compelling scenario emerged: a very sick infant destined to die and the anguished parents who thought they had no choice but to end their baby's life.

I wish I could take that picture and replace it with the images of Rachel and Gabriel. I wish that everyone who will face the circumstances we did might know how much that time with our baby meant to us.

If parents are blessed with the life of a child, how could they give up an opportunity for love in exchange for such violence? Everything inside us cries out for a different solution---for a better way. There is another way. We know because we chose it.

It was to deliver a living infant and allow him to die a natural and peaceful death in the loving arms of his parents. To suggest there are no options is to reject our own humanity. It is to take what is profound and mysterious and cut it off.

A Well-known media person says: [NOTE: This is POWERFUL SATIRE!]
"I know Rick Santorum. I've often been in his company.

He appears regularly on my radio show. We've ridden the train to Washington together. He once gave me a ride in his Jeep. And, at a campaign rally, he introduced my son to the President.

Yes, you could say that Rick Santorum has been a friend of mine.

But now I'm second-guessing the relationship. What choice do I have, really, in light of last week's expose of his finances linked right here on Huffington Post?

Frankly, until I read the full article from The American Prospect, I didn't appreciate what rises to the level of political scandal these days.

But if that which was covered in the reportage meets the mark - and it must, given the word choice (unorthodox, unconventional, improper), then I must be sitting on a powder keg of information.

The story featured the Senator's smug mug and included some shocking claims concerning his personal finances.

Like many who read it, I was appalled to learn that Senator Santorum owns a home, subject to some nefarious lending scheme called "a mortgage," which obligates him to repay borrowed money to a bank at a competitive interest rate.

[In other words he didn't get in by "nefarious means" - check out how Obama's got their home and their benefactor Resnik now in jail!]

What skullduggery!

That wicked revelation would alone justify support for his electoral challenger, but for the Philadelphia Inquirer's cutting-edge follow-up, which revealed that Bob Casey Jr. also employs the same method to finance his home.

In fact, both Casey and Santorum have been known to actually make an extra payment every so often as part of a clever means of reducing their outstanding principle.

The chutzpah of these men!

But, as reported, Santorum's personal and financial transgressions go beyond the clever "mortgage" used to buy his home.

The man, it turns out, drinks Starbucks coffee while holding court with political supporters and may once have enjoyed a $4.48 Ben and Jerry's ice-cream cone.

(If forensics confirms that it was Cherry Garcia, I intend to use this column space to call for an investigation led by the likes of Plamegate inquisitor Patrick Fitzgerald.)

And there's reason to believe we may have seen just the tip of the iceberg.

On the heels of the revelation that Santorum has a mortgage at market rate and that he does not himself pay for work-related expenses . . .

. . .comes the news that he established a charity that pays out money to the needy, which is clearly a malversation.

The Senator's efforts yielded only $501,000 in donations to the homeless and those with AIDS from 2001 to 2004.

The gall of the man, giving only a half-million to the less fortunate!

Enough already! I'm pushed over the edge. In the name of my children, I must come clean about the Rick Santorum I've known.

As a public servant, he's no George Smathers. The junior senator from Pennsylvania has baggage of the worst kind:

• For starters, Rick Santorum is a shameless extrovert. Indeed, this man who is a self-proclaimed defender of the American family has actually practiced nepotism with his sister-in- law.

And it gets worse.

• At last year's ballyhooed Pennsylvania Society gathering, I personally overheard Rick Santorum express his fondness for the work of a New York City-based thespian!

Do I have your attention yet? Because here comes the mother-lode.

• Rick Santorum might currently be married to Karen Santorum, but before that heterosexual matrimony, he was known to practice celibacy. And not just once. We're talking habitually!

A surprise? Not when you know the rest.

• See, while it has been an acknowledged part of his biography that Rick Santorum graduated from Penn State, few are aware that he once matriculated with Happy Valley coeds.

The Senator is just not the high-binder you may have imagined.

It's an ugly story, all right. What relief that the truth is out!"]
