Cambridge: The "Greatest Name in Chaplaincy!"

LESSON-4 Chaplaincy vs Pastorate

The Pastorate is quite distinct from the Chaplaincy, and Pastoring has the following very natural - though non-scriptural - and very negative tendencies:

[1] The Pastor's livelihood superficially depends upon the size, giving, and faithfulness, of his specific membership, and local congregation. Therefore it is very natural for a Pastor to want to build his personal-Church-income-base, just like any business person in any town promotes their own business - and hopes their competitors - go out of business!

[2] The Kingdom of God does not lose anything if a faithful tithing member of the Baptist Church leaves, and joins the Full-Gospel Church up the road because of the Music Program, Youth Program, etc., but the Baptist Church loses, according to the Pastor's support, income base, and ability to pay their "local Church bills".

[3] For the local pastor whose income depends on the members (customers?), he cannot afford to lose very many members, or he will lose his income, perhaps the building where they meet, and eventually, even his job.

Thus it is very natural and common for pastors to be as follows:

> > Very denominational and sectarian

> > Very jealous & critical of other preachers

> > Very jealous & critical of other Churches

> > Easy to criticize and gossip against other preachers

> > Easy to criticize and gossip against other Churches

> > Criticize, condemn and renounce all that "competing Churches" do

> > Preach against other Churches instead of "Preaching Jesus!"

> > Preach against other preachers instead of "Preaching Jesus!"

> > Preach "nit-picking doctrine" constantly (straining at gnats Christ called it) instead of "Preaching Jesus!"

> > Most pastors find it very easy to snub other preachers and members of other Churches in public.

> > Most pastors are happy when other Churches struggle and split.

> > Most pastors are jealous when other Churches succeed and prosper.

> > Most pastors will serve their members greatly in the name of love and serving Christ [because it is "job security!"], but have neither time nor money for those who are NOT their members.

> > Even among their own members, most pastors will serve their "TITHING-GIVING" members greatly in the name of love and serving Christ [because it is "job security"], but have neither time nor money for those members whom they know to give very little!

> > Most pastors will serve strangers and new people greatly in the name of love and serving Christ - if they are good prospects to come to their Church [because it is "job security"] - but have nothing but scorn for those who are not in the last likely to ever joining their Church.

Pastoral Set-of-attitudes

*** This set-of-attitudes has some degree of "human-Earthly-success" in building a local, sectarian Church, that stands tightly-knit together, against all others who do not attend their Church, whether they are fellow-Christians, or non-believers.

*** However, this set-of-attitudes was NOT the attitudes of Jesus and His Apostles

> > Furthermore, many Pastors really couldn't care less if the community does poorly or not, as long as their Church does well.

It should be obvious that this set-of-attitudes that the vast majority of all pastors "exhibit" - even though they will never admit it publicly - if you watch what they do, you will find them overwhelmingly. What we do with our time, and money, tells the world what we really believe.

Let's take a moment to address factually that the average American Church averages 75 people and takes in $150,000 a year with this general set-of-attitudes. The simple truth is that Christ cannot, and will not bless this set of attitudes, and the small, poor, stagnate condition of most local churches - struggling and declining - is evidence something is greatly wrong!

The basis of Mt 25:21 is a powerful promise and guarantee: 'His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and FAITHFUL servant: thou hast been FAITHFUL over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things.'

IF we are greedy, selfish, self-centered and sectarian with the "hand-full of followers" - obviously, this set of attitudes is not which Christ will bless: so 95% of local Churches continue to struggle!

A Wise Chaplain's Set-of-attitudes

[1] The wise Chaplain's livelihood does NOT depend on the size, giving and faithfulness of his specific membership and local congregation, and Chaplains must NOT adopt "preacher like" attitudes.

[2] The wise Chaplain must realize the Kingdom of God DOES lose every time a Chaplain does not reach out and "Minister the love of Christ effectively!"

[3] The wise Chaplain must realize that if they do not reach out to ALL people, of ALL faiths, and ALL races, of ALL languages and nations, such Chaplains will not be blessed, and will not be called upon to serve their communities.

Thus it is natural for the "Wise Chaplain" to be as follows:

> > Very NON-denominational and NON-sectarian,

> > Very NON-jealous of all other preachers, and to the contrary, should do all they can to promote every Bible Preacher in town!

> > Very NON-jealous of all other Churches, and to the contrary, should do all they can to promote every Bible Church in town!

> > The wise Chaplain will NOT criticize and gossip against other preachers!

> > The wise Chaplain will NOT criticize and gossip against other Churches!

> > The wise Chaplain will NOT criticize, Bible Churches and will NOT see them as competing at all . . . but rather as being on the "same team" - the Lord's team!

> > The wise Chaplain will "Preach Jesus!" instead of preaching against other Churches!

> > The wise Chaplain will "Preach Jesus!" instead of preaching against other preachers!

> > The wise Chaplain will "Preach Jesus!" instead of preaching "nit-picking doctrine" constantly . . . that is (straining at gnats Christ called it)!

> > The wise Chaplain will NOT snub other preachers and members of other Churches in public.

> > The wise Chaplain will NOT be happy when other Churches struggle and split.

> > The wise Chaplain will NOT be jealous when other Churches succeed and prosper.

> > The wise Chaplain will serve all members-citizens of their communities greatly in the name of love and serving Christ - NOT because it is "job security"!

> > The wise Chaplain will serve all members-citizens of their communities, greatly; NOT distinguishing between those who have money to bless them, and those who don't have money!

> > The wise Chaplain will serve strangers and new people greatly in the name of love and serving Christ - simply because the wise chaplain remembers he will answer to Jesus face to face . . . for every encounter and every potential opportunity to serve faithfully!

Paul's Pattern

The wise Chaplain will pattern personal ministry after the Apostle Paul who declared:

1 Cor 9:19-23 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

And this I do for the gospel's sake,

More by Paul

1 Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

1 Cor 1:18 & 21 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

The Wise Chaplain

* * The wise Chaplain talks of Jesus constantly, and never mentions denominations - except to say they are divisive destructive, and cause diminishing and decay - in the Body of Christ!

* * The wise Chaplain reaches out to all strangers, of all races and languages, in all stages of false religions, remembering . . . that we must always be Christ-like to strangers, that Scriptures tells us that: "hereby, some have entertained Angels unawares. [Hebrews]

* * The wise Chaplain reaches out to serve the poor, the unclean, the shabby, the rude, and the uncouth - always remembering Christ's words "whatsoever you have done unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me."

* * The wise Chaplain is NOT concerned about building a single local Church, but is greatly concerned about building his Community to become part of the ever-growing Kingdom of God!
