Christ's Philosophy of Ministry -1

"Making Disciples who Make Disciples!"

> > Every group struggles to find new Ministers and young Ministerial students;

> > Every group struggles for more funds;

> > Christianity in the USA & Europe is completely broken and dysfunctional;

> > Many of the Pastor-Leaders are good-&-Godly men, striving for the mastery, . . .so we are compelled to analyze this “Modern-Method” that many of us still follow . . .

. . . compared to Christ’s Personal Method (and Apostle Paul's), 2,000 years old.

The "Modern Method of Ministry" is to have "Professional Clergy" try to "Draw a Crowd" - seeking all of the publicity possible, to "advertise" who they are, greatly emphasizing music, entertainment, drama, variety of all kinds, extreme brevity, jokes and humor in every message (# See what Scripture says about "jesting" and even laughter . . . it is "sobering!"), . . .

Yet we find Jesus leaving the "uncommitted crowd" to climb a mountain, go into the desert, or across the Sea to the wilderness, etc., where the vast uncommitted crowds could not - or would not - go.

Why did Jesus do this?

Didn't Jesus want to preach to as many as possible?
Didn't Jesus want to win as many converts as possible?
Didn't Jesus want to train as many Disciples as possible?

The answers are "Yes!" "Yes!" and "Yes!"

MODERN ERROR CLERGY-LAITY: 

Most ministers in the Western World use the “professional clergy-spectator laity” system.

> > The “Clergy” are “Professionally Trained Experts who Perform Publicly”

> > The “Laity” are “Untrained Spectators who Contribute Finances and Clap” for the professional performers.

(We will ignore for now that there are to be NO SPECTATORS in the Body of Christ! ALL are to Minister . . . and ALL are to supply something to the Body!)

There are many such “Professional-Performing-Clergy” who have done well . . . so the world says:

> > Dr. Robert Schuller has several thousand members after 50 years at the Crystal Cathedral. The growth stopped, however, over 30 years ago. They have deficit-spent over the years and are deeply in debt in 2009, and just sold property for many millions ($60-million as I recall) - trying to “keep the appearance of success" - yet growing in debt daily with ever-decreasing offerings and attendance and no real solution . . .

. . . EXCEPT to get "bigger names" to draw-a-crowd: Hollywood, Music and Sports stars, etc. Hopefully, they at least know who Jesus is . . .

Dr. T.D. Jakes of the Potter's House - with a tremendously large Ministry with "Mega-Man Conferences" etc., . . . are no longer able to grow, and are striving mightily just to hold on to what they have.

> > Dr. D. James Kennedy built a great Cathedral in Coral Ridge Florida, but he peaked in early 1980's with over 10,000 members, and in spite of his most-professional performances, his membership dwindled to about 2,000 over the last 30 years. When he died, his Main Organization, “Re-Claiming America” - that he spent so much time and money in latter years - was put out of business in a week: DEAD!

> > Oral Roberts University was also in steep decline, deeply in debt, and more so every year, with great buildings never finished. . . the wealthy "Greene Family" from Tulsa resuced them financially, took over the university (putting everyone named "Roberts" off all boards), and city government offices now house the "City-of-Faith" . . . that was built with God's sacred tithe and the contributions of widows . . .

. . . for the saving of souls and healing of bodies . . . NOT for atheist, anti-Christ, secular, evolutionistic government offices and agencies to persecute Christian Schools and Ministries!

> > Bob Jones University has been stagnate for 40 years, unable to grow in spite of hundred-million dollar budgets.

> > Rick Warren’s Church is unable to pay bills from time to time, and Warren must take his personal money from books to pay Church bills: more debt plus interest. He literally had to "beg for funds at Christmas 2009".

> > Whatever happened to Promise Keepers? They filled the greatest stadiums 10 years ago, . . .but can’t fill a coffee-shop today!

> > Even Joyce Meyers and Joel Osteen - who gave up Bible Preaching to be "Life-Coaches” [in order to reach the masses regardless of belief] - have peaked, leveled off, and only maintain “CROWDS” by hiring “POPULAR" singers who appear for them and “use the name of Jesus" . . . anything to sell records.

> > There are scores of thousands of others, all traveling the same road: going in debt to build great facilities, doing everything possible to "Draw a Crowd" . . . but cease growing - if they ever grew at all - and fail to gain converts or make disciples, . . . stagnate and decline.

“Vanity of vanity, Scripture says . . . All (worldly ways, goals, values and methods) is vanity!”

Even the world describes the “Mega-Churches in the USA as a “Circus-Like-Atmosphere” . . . and accuses most Ministers of as being “entertainers” - more like Jay Leno than John the Baptist.

> > Dr. Jerry Falwell did a good job training leaders, but died 100 million dollars in debt, owing interest as well, things that God’s Word expressly forbids. It remains to be seen if his two son’s can raise the money to pay Falwell Senior’s debts. . . and maintain the Ministry . . . while maintaing Scriptural Doctrine.

[I LOVE the Falwell Family and this is my earnest prayer!]

CHRIST’S PHILOSOPHY OF LEADERSHIP: "OPPOSITE of MODERNITY!"

Amazingly, Jesus walked away from great masses, of perhaps 30-40,000, to climb a high mountain taking 3-hours to ascend, with perhaps only 10 to 100 who followed. The steep, high climb up the mountain on a hot day separated the followers by their dedication.

Christ's method was a most amazing display of wisdom. How do yo - personally - propose to "separate your followers according to their dedication and commitment"?

Once Christ and all followers knew who the most dedicated followers were, He conducted a most powerful-&-high-quality “leadership meeting” - with only the most dedicated followers!

Mat 5:1 “And seeing the multitudes, He (Jesus) went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto him:”

Note that this climb also separated and weeded-out

[1] the lazy,

[2] the tired,

[3] the sickly,

[4] the weak,

[5] the aged infirm,

[6] the too-busy,

[7] the uncaring,

[8] the unbelieving,

[9] the doubting,

[10] the unwilling

. . . and Jesus accomplished this without offending the masses of others.

Had Jesus announced that He DID NOT want to meet with "losers, average Believers, typical attenders, spectators, and for all of those listed above to "stay home" He would have offended many, some of whom would have grown in their commitment to become true Disciples.

However, THIS IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE of the Leadership Philosophy followed by almost every Modern Christian Leader known, . . . who absolutely, willingly, eagerly, and always . . . do leave - and will leave - their best-and-most-dedicated-disciples - anytime and always - to be with a bigger crowd: anyone, anywhere, at anytime . . . just so long as it is a “Bigger Crowd” than the one they are with.

This bears repeating: almost every Modern Christian Leader known, . . . absolutely, exclusively and always . . . do leave - and will leave - their best-and-most-dedicated-disciples - anytime and always - to be with a bigger crowd: anyone, anywhere, at anytime . . . just so long as it is a “Bigger Crowd” than the one they are with.

To the contrary, Jesus spent the majority of His time teaching and training a handful of men, twelve to be exact.

Christ made a three-and-one-half-year investment in 11 men, as Judas, we know, did not follow through to train others, and for simplicities sake, let’s say that at least one of the other disciples withered under the pressures and also failed to train others.

Therefore, let us work with the number 10 for simplicity's sake in the little bit of math to follow.

EXAMPLE of the FRANTIC PASTOR: 

In fact,

> > the more a local Church grows,

> > the less time the Pastor has for anyone in his ministry,

. . . including paid-&-volunteer staff, Deacons-&-Elders, wife and children. Most Pastor’s - if successful in reaching numbers - run themselves ragged . . . doing 'less-&-less' with each individual to reach 'more-&-more' masses of people until finally . . . they are doing "nothing-with-everyone"!

Let’s call this leader of a large and growing Church “The Frantic Pastor!”

MODERN MINISTRY MODEL: the Frantic PASTOR!

The "Frantic Pastor" sees himself as a "CEO" (Chief Executive Officer) of a Corporation like Donald Trump or Bill Gates. He has many meetings to attend, counseling sessions to do, sermons to prepare, budgets to approve, schools to superintend, often radio and television ministry to perform, jokes to learn, new stories to find, maybe songs-and-or-instruments to practice, mid-week services, school chapels, community functions to attend, Kiwanis & Lion's Club meetings, golf with the Ministerial Association, Chaplains the local sports team, head-up the National Day of Prayer locally - has weddings and funerals and hospitals - and new build projects to work on, fund-raisers to promote, bills to pay and debts to be retired, drama clubs to oversee and music teams to approve; buildings to upgrade, repair, and insure, advertising campaigns for the community, the radio & TV audience, evangelism campaigns to promote, last year's attendance records to exceed, new converts classes to "stop-by-and-greet", children's vacation Bible School to plan, Sunday School to oversee, Youth Ministry to keep on track, Junior church, a Bible college to Chancellor, the Bank President's Birthday Party to attend and lunch with the Mayor. . . (possibly with a house, spouse, kids, car and other family to attend!) . . .

Let’s say the “Frantic Pastor” - racing to-&-fro in a maniacal-like-fashion [with neither time for exercise nor a decent meal] ACTING SO VERY IMPORTANT, HIGH & MIGHTY - just barely touching the lives of the masses, without a single quality relationship . . . decides to slow down and develop a Christ-Like-Ministry.

Do you remember what Jesus promised?

[1] Jesus said: "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden.

[2] Jesus said: Take “My Yoke” upon you (Yes, Christ’s method does require a “Very-restrictive” YOKE! He only taught “One-Method” of Leadership)

[3] Jesus said: "Learn of Me!

[4] Jesus said: "My yoke is simple, but my burden is light!"

From now on, the Formerly Frantic Pastor will be spending massive amounts of time with his most dedicated leaders - over years - training only the BEST-&-MOST-DEDICATED LEADERS INTENSIVELY - for at least three-five years - who will then each train 10-other leaders, etc., who will teach and train others . . . and continue the "Making-Disciples-who-Make-Disciples" unabated. 

The Apostle Paul wrote it like this to Timothy:

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same COMMIT thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also (to commit to faithful men who will do the same - as this commit is in the Greek continuing verb tense). 2 Tim 2:2

So here we have it from Christ . . . to Paul & others . . .to Timothy and others . . . to other Faithful men . . . who will teach the same to others also, . . . who will teach the same to others also, . . .who will teach the same to others also, . . . who will teach the same to others also, . . . so it continues

This is how the “Little House Church” in Rome - without means or money - conquered the mighty Roman Empire that stood for 1,000 years . . . in just 2-&-1/2 centuries!

Back to the Formerly “Frantic-&-Failing Leader” - perhaps even “You!” - now pushing forward wearing the Yoke-of-Christ:

Your Divine Model Ministry would look like this.

You start with 10 men,

[1] After 3 years you have trained 11 men counting yourself

[2] After 6 years you have 121 trained disciples counting yourself

[3] After 9 years you have 1,210 trained disciples counting yourself

[4] After 12 years you have 12,100 trained disciples

[5] After 15 years you have 121,000 trained disciples

[6] After 18 years you have 1,210,000 trained disciples

[7] After 21 years you have 12,100,000 trained disciples

[8] After 24 years you have 121,000,000 trained disciples

[9] After 27 years you have 1,210,000,000 trained disciples

[10] After 30 years you have 12,100,000,000 trained disciples

After a 30 year Ministry of NEVER WORKING WITH MORE THEN 10-PEOPLE AT A TIME . . . you have trained 12,100,000,000  disciples, . . . and the WHOLE WORLD HAS BEEN SAVED AND TRAINED . . .TWICE OVER!

. . . from the Ministry of one person!!!!! . . . with an extended group of 50,000,000,000-75,000,000,000 people) . 

This is 10-times as many as ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THE WHOLE WORLD!

ANALYSIS OF THE MODERN METHOD!

> > either seeking crowds,

> > or doing the wrong things, (running errands for the organization)

> > or spending his time with the wrong people . . . such as spending much time with the lazy, the disobedient, the uncommitted, the emotionally weak, the failing, the stubbornly helpless, the depressed & discouraged, rather that those with the DEEPEST COMMITMENT!  

In Christ’s Mathematical Model given above . . . if only 1% of trained leaders stay focused . . . a 30 year ministry would still produce 1 million people in local church!!!

Yet in my home town there is a most gifted Minister in every way who has only 35 members after a full-35-year-plus ministry!

My Fellow-laborer in Christ, not 1-local-church-in-1,000 operates properly . . . or anywhere near approaching Christ's Method & Priorities.

WHY?  Because the Television, Modern-&-Media Mega-Preachers IMITATE and MIMIC the world, acting like CEO's of secular corporations . . . and the other preachers IMITATE the TV and Mega-Church preachers.

Thus most Little Churches and Mega-Churches have the same philosophy of reaching people as Rock Concerts, Circuses, County-Fairs, Television & Music Stars: take all who will come, raise money at all costs, and do whatever it takes to draw a crowd!

SEE THE CHURCH MIMIC THE WORLD!

> > If it is a “Church Service” they will continue to put the camera on the young & pretty in the choir or music team, and the camera will "pan-the-audience" for the same: painted faces, form fitting clothes and shameful low-cut-tops.

> > If it is talk television, they will mostly have guests who are young & pretty, and the camera will "pan-the-audience" for the same: painted faces, form fitting clothes and shameful low-cut-tops.

> > If it is music, they will mostly have singers who are young & pretty and the camera will "pan-the-audience" for the same: painted faces, form fitting clothes and shameful low-cut-tops.

> > Even it is a Bill Gaither's Old Timers' Show, they will mostly show the singers who are youngest & pretty, and the camera will "pan-the-audience" for the same: painted faces, form fitting clothes and shameful low-cut-tops.

> > At the end of the "Christian" Television, they will “COPY” the world and show the credits of every person involved, as if we need to know the name of every person who held a light or moved a camera. God didn’t even bother to tell us who wrote much of the Bible!!!

> > The really ridiculous thing about Christian Television copying the world and showing hundred’s of persons involved, is that they could be sharing the Gospel after the program and perhaps getting someone saved!!!

> > Sadly, there is NO TIME to share the Gospel every half-hour at the end of each program . . . it is TOO EXPENSIVE . . . and WHY is there NO TIME? . . . because they are busy showing the credits!

> > Foolish, mindless, copying the world, and wondering why God does not bless!

Christ did NOTHING to promote - or cater to - SPECTATOR CHRISTIANITY!!!

PLEASE KNOW . . .

*** Christianity is NOT begging, pleading, persuading, and manipulating - "uncommitted people" to become committed . . .  

Christianity . . . as Christ practiced it . . . is walking constantly through the crowds . . . ALWAYS looking for those who are SO HUNGRY . . . and SO READY  . . . to DROP ALL . . . and FOLLOW CHRIST COMPLETELY!  

Jesus NEVER worried about Sunday Morning Attendance . . . but rather the number who had COMMITTED ALL to BECOME INSTRUCTED!!!

In fact, Jesus never even bothered to establish His own "scheduled public gathering" of any kind:

Jesus could have done any of the following:

> > Bought a new building for regular services (He had women who ministered to Him out of their substance)

> > Rented a building for regular services (He could have rented the Synagogue for the first-day-of-the-week)

> > Met under a tree for regular services (He often taught out of doors)

> > Jesus could have had "Sunday-Healing Services, and drawn bigger crowds than 300-500 Synagogues COMBINED! (Think what publicity that would have gotten him!)

But Jesus didn't pay any attention to drawing a crowd or the largeness of any crowd.

Thus as in Matt 5, Jesus LEFT the massive multitudes and climbed a high Mountain (I've been there, climbed it and it takes three hours!!!)    

> > Only the dedicated WOULD make the climb - who really wanted - what He had to teach  

 > > Only the energetic COULD make the climb - those sick and tired do little for Christ  

 > > Only those NOT OLD ENOUGH to be old wineskins - WOULD even attempt the climb  

SHOCKING TRUTH OF CHRIST'S MINISTRY

***Given our human propensity to help the MOST NEEDY and invest time and money in them, we somehow MISS what Jesus DID EXCLUSIVELY & COMPLETELY!!!!!      

Jesus healed the blind, the sad, sick, the insane, discouraged, the depressed, the lame, and the possessed . . . BUT HE NEVER INVITED EVEN ONE OF THEM . . . TO COME AND FOLLOW HIM as His personal Disciple!!!!!  

Jesus invited only the serious minded, the spiritually hungry, the mostly self-employed who could support their personal ministry as their companies went on, . . . and mostly younger workers -  rather than older wineskins, and workers-rather-than-spectators!!!  

Jesus walked away from the blind, the sick, the insane, the lame, and the possessed, and the beggars AFTER he Prayed for them, and sent most to their families and home-communities to GROW . . .    

PRAY FOR all you can - have healing lines, prayer-time all Sunday after noon . . . but teach, counsel and invest in THOSE HUNGRY TO BE INSTRUCTED & ARE COMMITTED all week long!!!

This is a "Hard saying" but if ignored, the ministry will quickly peak . . . stagnate, slowly decline - (as all denominations are doing) and the leadership becomes overworked . . . stressed discouraged and weary - failing to draw that "ever-bigger-crowd!"

CHRIST‘S LEADERSHIP IN CAPSULE FORM

When Jesus said "Follow Me", it was His Teaching, His Methods, His Principles, and His Practices He was talking about, not necessarily His suffering, martyrdom or public execution.

He defines what He meant very precisely:

“Follow me” Jesus said, and “I will make you to become “Fishers-of-men”, . . . and from Henceforth, thou shalt CATCH MEN!”

Therefore no matter who you are, what your are doing and why . . .

If you are NOT catching men . . . YOU ARE NOT FOLLOWING CHRIST!
