Christ's Philosophy of Ministry -3
“How Should we Train Christian Ministers?
("Bible College v. Modern Churches!")
It has been the custom for over 500 years for those called into full-time Ministry to "go off to Bible school." [1] The typical local Church has regularly scheduled Church "Services" - (wonder what chapter and verse they get that from: what are Church "services" . . . like computer services, taxi services, accounting services and janitorial services . . . ?)
[1-a] The typical Bible College has regularly scheduled "teaching classes" with quizzes and tests.
[2] The typical local Church spends lots of time singing, praise-&-worship, choirs, and special music in its services [2-a] The typical Bible College spends a lot of time studying, library research, and reading books.
[3] The typical local Church spends lots of time and energy trying to get a big Sunday Morning Crowd: they usually keep track of the attendance. [3-a] The typical Bible College spends lots of time and energy trying to get students to get higher grades they usually keep track of student grades.
[4] The typical local Church has lots of ministry to hospitals and nursing homes, spends lots of prayer time praying for the sick, and the financially in debt.
[4-a] The typical Bible College has lots of student-dating and students spend lots of time looking and praying for a steady partner.
[5] The typical local Church doesn't have a Bible College. [5-a] The typical Bible College isn't under the direct authority of a local Church.
[6] The one thing the typical local Church and typical Bible College have in common is that they both pray for and want more money, and wind up charging for things Jesus never charged for!
[7] Another thing the typical local Church and typical Bible College have in common is that they both profess "Christ-like goals:"
> > the church professes to be about winning souls, and > > the Bible College professes to be about training Ministers to win souls.
[8] Furthermore, what the typical local Church and typical Bible College have in common is that they both profess to be "following Christ" in Ministry . . . yet neither of them do what Christ did in Ministry, nor have His Priorities. [9] Sadly, what the typical local Church and typical Bible College also have in common is that they both are failing to get their "professed-jobs" done.
[10] Saddest of all regarding what the typical local Church and typical Bible College have in common is that they both are copying worldly models:
> > We have seen in Christ's Philosophy-1 how the Church follows the world, and does like Nashville & Hollywood in trying to get a crowd.
> > We have seen in Christ's Philosophy-2 how the Bible College follows the world, and does like Harvard & Yale in trying to train students in a classroom.
HARVARD & YALE SAYS . . . [HARVARD & YALE SAYS-1] Turn your children loose when they are 18, let them be free to do as they please WITHOUT Parental, or Pastoral oversight. So the world does what Harvard & Yale says and turns their children loose at age 18: no more parental obedience.
My friend, show me "age eighteen in God's Word." Why should you take your children - the most precious of all Earthly things you hold dear - and the only things you can take to Heaven with you, and turn them loose at a most vulnerable age?
Why spiritual principle are you following to willingly turn your precious children loose at age 18 to do as follows: > > Date whomever they want
> > Date as much as they want
> > Date as many different persons as they want
> > Date as late as they want - midnight, 2:00 am, 4:00 am, or try to finish the date in time for the morning class - if they even bother?
> > Do you really think there will be no pressure to take Birth Control pills at a Christian College?
> > Do you really think there will be no pressure to "social drink" at a Christian College?
> > Do you really think there will be no pressure to "try recreational drugs" at a Christian College?
> > Do you really think your 18-year-old is ready for "unlimited freedom" at a Christian College?
Harvard & Yale says so . . . and most Christian parents agree! These eyes have witnessed a million tears, from the eyes of those terribly distraught parents who exclaimed through broken sobs: "But I thought when I sent my child to a Christian College I wouldn't have to worry about these things!"
There has always been temptation to ask: "How can anyone on this Earth get to be 40 years of age . . . sitting under a God-called Minister . . . and still be so stupid???"
In fact, fellow college professors have told me who taught at both Christian Colleges and State Schools that the Christian School Students were worse in "reckless abandon" . . . because the state school kids had already experience much freedom over the past 4-6 years, . . .
. . . and many students from Christian homes were like animals let out of a cage!
This topic of turning your children loose without restraint or parental supervision at age 18 could be - and should be a book - but there is much more to cover in the "errors of Harvard & Yale!"
HARVARD & YALE SAYS . . . [HARVARD & YALE SAYS-2] The only way to learn . . . is to read books in a classroom! When you go to college today they all follow the Five-Failed-Principles of Learning: > > [1] You buy & read many "state approved and expensive" textbooks; > > [2] You have a "state approved teacher" tell you the same thing you read last night, in your state approved and expensive textbooks; > > [3] You take state approved quizzes & tests on your state approved and expensive textbooks; > > [4] You take state approved final exams on your state approved and expensive textbooks; > > [5] You get permanent grades and a state approved Degree based on your reading and remembering of your state approved and expensive textbooks!
HOW SUCCESSFUL IS THE STATE APPROVED SYSTEM? Check the local schools in Anytown USA! The State-approved, State-accredited government schools all over the USA, averages spending $10,000 per-student, per-year!
** At age 18 we find that a third have dropped out of school
** In many cities that rate rises to two-thirds drop-out rate
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot read and write well enough to fill-out a proper job application.
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot write their own resume and must "hire" it done.
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot find the USA on a world map.
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot make change for a dollar without struggle, or figure the amount of discount on a sale.
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot speak proper grammar at even the 6th-grade level.
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot write a simple paragraph with proper grammar & structure at even the 6th-grade level.
** After twelves years of State approved schooling, many cannot read and write well, and Military papers for new recruits must be written at the 4th-grade level, and public newspapers are little better.
*****If you think there is some "miraculous change" that occurs from "State-Approved-Government-Schools from high-school 12th grade to college freshmen . . . . . . you are as ill-informed and naive as the Christian parent above who didn't think there was any social pressure for sex and alcohol at Christian Colleges!
***** Check your local colleges, especially Community Colleges, and you will find they ALL teach: > > Remedial reading > > Remedial writing > > Remedial math > > Remedial English > > Remedial study skills > > Most of these go down to the 4th grade level or so;
Why must colleges teach fourth-grade knowledge? Because the State-Approved High-School Graduates were "Approved-&-Passed" . . . year after year after year . . . in the State-Approved Books, Quizzes, and Standardized testing system.
Why are their "Community Colleges" at all? Because the State-Approved Government Schools system simply does not work, is badly broken, and must be compensated for by the Community Colleges.
[PLEASE NOTE: We are not speaking against Community Colleges, as in many cases, these have some of the most caring administrations of the whole American Government Educational System, who see to it that the best teaching in the whole system occurs in their institutions.
Part of the reason is that the community college system makes much more provision for "hands on learning" - tutoring, and learning that requires the students actually do something besides sit-&-listen!]
PLEASE DON'T MISUNDERSTAND Now please don't misunderstand me - I love books! I personally own over 40,000 volumes - have spent more on books than on my new house - and have read a book-a-day-since fourth grade when challenged by my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Stenson, at the Moxahala Grade School.
Please don't misunderstand me - I love classroom-schooling!
I have attended over a dozen State Universities in several states - and about as many Christian & Bible Colleges - all with 4.0 GPA and each of the numerous Degrees are all "Summa Cum Lauda".
I could be the "eternal student" - excel in that arena - and would gladly use that system: if Christ had used it and commanded it.
Why didn't Christ use it? It doesn't work! I am not saying "dispense with books". The Cambridge System of Learning and Philosophy for Bible school is very, very simple.
Bible School Philosophy: DO WHAT JESUS DID! Isn't this really simple and clear?
Now my friend, lets remember that Jesus liked books Himself, and spoke four languages: > > Jesus taught at the synagogue in Hebrew, > > Jesus used Aramaic in every day life, > > Jesus knew Greek and introduced Greek concepts into His teaching (The English "Church" - ekklesia - itself is a Greek Word & Concept) > > Jesus spoke Latin in Roman Legal matters including His own trials and court hearings.
The Apostle Paul liked books so much, that when in an unheated prison over winter he asked for someone to bring him a coat and his books, but if they couldn't bring both . . . forget the coat and bring the books.
Conservative Bible Christians are not against books, it is just that books are a very small part of "complete learning!" Let's look at the facts:
> > [1] Jesus NEVER sat down with His disciples and got out the Scrolls;
> > [2] Jesus NEVER told His disciples to go out and buy such and such a Scrolls;
> > [3] Jesus NEVER told His disciples to read so much in the Bible Scrolls every day;
> > [4] Jesus NEVER quizzed His disciples or gave them "final exams" on what they had been assigned to read in any Scrolls;
> > [5] Jesus NEVER questioned His disciples on their reading of anything: Bible Scrolls or other scrolls;
> > [6] Jesus certainly NEVER gave His disciples final grades or a "Degree" based upon what they had been assigned to read in any Scrolls;
> > [7] Jesus could have made life much simpler for all modern Christians had He written some Principles and Practices very plainly - in light of the nearly 40,000 denominations world-wide but Christ never wrote a single sentence as far as anyone knows!
Faced with Two-Ways: "Harvard-&-Yale" or "Christ's"? Now my Christian friend, since the Harvard-&-Yale method is all about books . . . and the Way-of-Christ is not built upon books . . . somebody is "radically wrong!"
I wonder who it could be?
Let's pretend for a minute that you (or I) do not already believe in the superiority of Christ in all things. Let's see where "reason" - that God told us to use (Isa 1.17-18) takes us.
WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE: "BOOK-LEARNING" or "TRAINING"? > > [1] Would you want a piano teacher who never played for you or with you, or allowed you to touch a piano, but only gave you book after book on "music theory"?
> > [2] Would you want a singing teacher who never sang for you, or with you, or allowed you to sing, but only gave you book after book on "music theory"?
> > [3] Would you want to have open heart or brain surgery by a physician who never seen inside of a human being, never touched a real heart or brain, never even helped on a surgery - much less performed one - but had read all of the books on "medical theory" in Harvard & Yale Libraries?
> > [4] Would you want to fly on a jumbo-jet with a pilot who had NEVER flown any kind of plane, never co-piloted a plane, never ridden on a plane, never even touched - or seen - a real plane . . . but had read all of the books on "flying theory" in Harvard & Yale Libraries?
I think you get the picture . . . > > [5] Would you want a mechanic to rebuild your transmission who had never touched one, but had only read books? > > [6] Would you want to eat a Thanksgiving Dinner prepared by someone who had never cooked a single food one time, but had only read books?
> > [7] Would you want to hire an artist to paint your family portrait who had never painted, but only read books?
> > [8] Would you want your medicine mixed by one with no experience, who had only read books?
> > [9] Would you want your new house built by someone, who had never touched a hammer or saw, who had only read books?
> > [10] Would you want your tooth filled by someone, who had only read books?
It seems like it can be greatly established that book learning is NOT the best way to learn.
In fact, most would greatly prefer a pilot who couldn't even read and write . . . but had learned-well on the job . . . and been successfully flying for years - to one who had read all of the Harvard-&-Yale books, but never seen a plane!
In fact, most would greatly prefer a heart doctor who couldn't even read and write . . . but had learned on the job, by successfully assisting for decades, and then successfully doing open-heart surgeries for years - to one who had read the Harvard-&-Yale books, but never done a surgery!
Now lets make it more spiritual > > Do you want a full-time pastor who has never preached a sermon - just read books? > > Do you want to learn how to pray, from someone who has never prayed a real prayer - just read books?
> > Do you want to be family counseled, by someone who has never been married, never raised children, never been around married folks or children, or even had a date - just read books?
> > Do you want to learn how to win souls, from someone who has never won a soul - just read books?
> > Do you want a full-time pastor to lead the whole ministry, who has never lead anything - just read books?
We don't either!
What did I Learn at America's top Christian College? I attended Bob Jones University, the absolute top-rated Christian College four-decades ago. In many ways it is one of the greatest institutions ever - and still among the top 2-3 schools. It is as "good-as-it-gets" for having the inherent problems of "patterning Harvard-&-Yale's system".
Here is what I got at BJU: > I got a lot of book learning. . .
> > > But no one from Bob Jones University EVER took me soul-winning!
> I got a lot of culture with the Art Museum, literature and all. . . > > > But no one from Bob Jones University EVER taught me how to pray or prayed with me. I was never able to attend a prayer-meeting with any one on staff or faculty of BJU!
> I got a lot of information in "Preacher's Boys Class" . . . > > > But no one from Bob Jones University EVER gave me an opportunity to preach!
> I got a lot of instruction on various phases of ministry. . . > > > But no one from Bob Jones University EVER took me to the hospital or prison to teach me how to witness in these settings!
> I got a lot of discipline imposed on me. . . > > > But no one from Bob Jones University EVER tutored me for 30 seconds!
> I got a lot of Bob Jones name & glory. . .
> > > I never got close to EVER shaking hands with any of the three Bob Jones's!
> I got book-learning, erudition and high educational standards. . . > > > But no one from Bob Jones University EVER gave me the slightest bit of training.
> I learned how to build a "resume" from Bob Jones University . . . > > > But I NEVER learned how to "build a Church or Ministry!"
HOWEVER, . . . I did make some really great friends while at Bob Jones University . . . sadly, the one thing they all have in common is this: of all whom I became good friends with, none are in full-time Ministry today - except me!
Sadly, I wasn't able to become a "full-time Minister" by what I learned at Bob Jones University . . . I learned what I needed to learn about being a Minister by attending:
> > Over 150 Sword of the Lord Conferences;
> > By visiting Dr. Jerry Falwell's Ministry personally over 150 times, each time getting a bit of personal training;
> > By visiting Dr. Jack Hyles's Ministry personally over 150 times, each time getting a bit of personal training;
> > By visiting over 1,000 of the largest and most dynamic Ministries on the face of the Earth, personally, and each place each time getting a bit of personal training;;
In the next section of Philosophy, we will compare all of this to how Christ trained His Disciples.
