1] A wee bit of sun. Vitamin D, which lies dormant in skin until ultraviolet rays activate it, may protect themselves from a variety of cancers, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, breast, and colon.

Ironically, it even improves survival rates of melanoma, the most serious skin cancer. But 10 to 15 minutes a few days a week is all it takes to benefit. (Or you could try a supplement--aim for 400 IU a day.) If you're out any longer than that, slather on the sunscreen.


2] Eat an orange every day. It just may zap a strain of the H. pylori bacteria that causes peptic ulcers and can lead to stomach cancer. Researchers in San Francisco found that infected people with high levels of vitamin C in their blood were less likely to test positive for the cancer-causing strain.

colonoscopies Though colonoscopies are about as popular as root canals, if you're 50 or older, get one. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Don't think you're off the hook because you got a digital fecal occult blood test at your last checkup: Research by the Veterans Affairs Cooperative Study found that the test missed 95% of the cases. (Schedule your first colonoscopy before your 50th if you have a family history of colon cancer.)

Steam a little green. Piles of studies have shown that piles of broccoli help stave off ovarian, stomach, lung, bladder, and colorectal cancers. And steaming it for 3 to 4 minutes enhances the power of the cancer-fighting compound sulforaphane, which has been shown to halt the growth of breast cancer cells. (Sorry, microwaving doesn't do the trick; it strips out most antioxidants.) Get more protection by sprinkling a handful of selenium-rich sunflower seeds, nuts, or mushrooms on your greens. Researchers are discovering that sulforaphane is about 13 times more potent when combined with the mineral selenium.

Pick a doc with a past. Experience--lots of it--is critical when it comes to accurately reading mammograms. A study from the University of California, San Francisco, found that doctors with at least 25 years' experience were more accurate at interpreting images and less likely to give false positives. Ask about your radiologist's track record. If she is freshly minted or doesn't check a high volume of mammograms, get a second read from someone with more mileage.

Drink jolt-less java. Downing 2 or more cups of decaf a day may lower the incidence of rectal cancer by 52%, finds a study from two large and long-term research projects--the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study from Harvard University. One theory is that coffee increases bowel movements, which helps to reduce the risk. Why decaf reigns supreme, however, remains a mystery.

Drop 10 pounds. Being overweight or obese accounts for 20% of all cancer deaths among women and 14% among men, notes the American Cancer Society. (You're overweight if your body mass index is between 25 and 29.9; you're obese if it's 30 or more.) Plus, losing excess pounds reduces the body's production of female hormones, which may protect against breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancers. Even if you're not technically overweight, gaining just 10 pounds after the age of 30 increases your risk of developing breast, pancreatic, and cervical, among other cancers.

Bananas a day cut their risk of kidney cancer by 54%, compared with those who didn't eat them at all, found an analysis of 61,000 women at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. Gnawing on root vegetables such as carrots did the same.

Get naked with a friend. You'll need help examining every inch of your body--including your back, scalp, and other hard-to-see places--for possible changes in the size or color of moles, blemishes, and freckles. These marks could spell skin cancer. Women, take special note of your legs: Melanoma mainly occurs there. For the guys, the trunk, head, and neck are the most diagnosed spots. While you're at it, check your fingernails and toenails, too. Gray-black discoloration or a distorted or elevated nail may indicate the disease. And whether you see changes or not, after age 40, everyone should see a dermatologist yearly.

See into the future. Go to Your Disease Risk to assess your chance of developing 12 types of cancer, including ovarian, breast, and colon. After the interactive tool estimates your risk, you'll get personalized tips for prevention.

Pay attention to pain. If you're experiencing a bloated belly, pelvic pain, and an urgent need to urinate, see your doc. These symptoms may signal ovarian cancer, particularly if they're severe and frequent. Women and physicians often ignore these symptoms, and that's the very reason that this disease can be deadly. When caught early, before cancer has spread outside the ovary, the relative 5-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is a jaw-dropping 90 to 95%.

Get calcium daily. Milk's main claim to fame may also help protect your colon. Those who took calcium faithfully for 4 years had a 36% reduction in the development of new pre-cancerous colon polyps 5 years after the study had ended, revealed Dartmouth Medical School researchers. (They tracked 822 people who took either 1,200 mg of calcium every day or a placebo.) Though the study was not on milk itself, you can get the same amount of calcium in three 8-ounce glasses of fat-free milk, along with an 8-ounce serving of yogurt or a 2- to 3-ounce serving of low-fat cheese daily.

Sweat 30 minutes a day. One of the best anticancer potions is a half hour of motion at least 5 days a week. Any kind of physical activity modulates levels of androgens and estrogen, two things that can protect women against estrogen-driven cancers such as ovarian and endometrial, as well as some types of breast cancer. The latest proof comes by way of a Canadian study that found that women who get regular, moderate exercise may lower their risk of ovarian cancer by as much as 30%. Bonus: All that moving might speed everything through your colon, which may help stave off colon cancer.

Stamp out smoking--all around you. Lung cancer is well known as one of the main hazards of smoking. But everything the smoke passes on its way to the lungs can also turn cancerous: mouth, larynx, and esophagus. The fun doesn't stop there. Smokers are encouraging stomach, liver, prostate, colorectal, cervical, and breast cancers as well. The good news: If you give up the cigs today, within 15 years, your lung cancer risk will drop to almost pre-smoking lows. Share that news with the people who puff around you, because exposure to someone else's smoke can cause lung cancer, and it may boost your chances of cervical cancer by 40%.

Step away from the white bread. If you eat a lot of things with a high glycemic load--a measurement of how quickly food raises your blood sugar--you may run a higher risk of colorectal cancer than women who eat low-glycemic-load foods, finds a Harvard Medical School study involving 38,000 women. The problem eats are mostly white: white bread, pasta, potatoes, and sugary pastries. The low-glycemic-load stuff comes with fiber.

Have your genes screened. Do you have a strong family history of any kind of cancer or multiple cancers? Talk with your doctor about genetic counseling. For instance, nearly everyone born with familial adenomatous polyposis (the genetic predisposition to colon cancer) develops the disease by age 40 if preventive surgery isn't done. Knowing this early can aid in prevention and early detection.

Request a better breast scan. If you're at high risk of breast cancer--you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation, for example - ask your doctor to pair your routine mammogram with an MRI. One study found that together, the two picked up 94% of tumors; mammography alone detected just 40% and MRI, 77%.

Grill smarter. Cooking your food over an open flame is a great way to cut calories. Unfortunately, it can also raise your cancer risk: The grill's high temps can trigger substances in muscle proteins to form cancer-causing compounds called hetero-cyclic amines, or HCAs. But avoiding this potential hazard is easy; simply keep gas jets low or wait until the charcoal turns into glowing embers before you start cooking.

Protect yourself even more by lacing your burgers with rosemary (and perhaps other antioxidant-rich herbs such as basil, oregano, or thyme). This helps reduce the amount of some HCAs in meat, a Kansas State University study found. Also helpful: Microwaving meat ahead of time helps disable HCA formation and cuts down on grilling time.

Exercise: Yet another reason to love your Swiffer: Active postmenopausal women who got most of their exercise from housework cut their risk of breast cancer by 30%, Canadian researchers say.

Let garlic lie. Thanks to this bulbed wonder, you can ward off vampires and stave off cancer. To preserve the potential cancer-fighting power of garlic, chop it up and let it sit a bit. Research suggests that heating garlic can block 90% of the activity of alliinase, the enzyme that helps to form a cancer-fighting compound. Alliinase is activated when the cloves are crushed or cut, but if cut garlic cools its heels for 5 to 10 minutes before heating, enough compounds are formed to survive cooking.

Check for radon. Exposure to this odorless, radioactive gas that's produced by the natural decay of uranium is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the EPA. Test your home to see if you're safe. The National Safety Council's National Radon Hotline (800-767-7236) offers low-cost test kits; they're also available at hardware stores.

Play hot tomato. Red fruits (watermelon, tomato, pink grapefruit) are loaded with lycopene, a substance that has been proven time and time again to be a potent cancer fighter. It seems that heating said fruits makes the lycopene easier for the body to use, which explains why men who eat a lot of ketchup, pizza (it's in the sauce), and spaghetti (ditto) are far less likely to get prostate cancer.

Ditch the wieners. You can smother 'em in all the ketchup you want, but you can't negate a hot dog's, well, negatives. One study of 190,545 people found that eating a wiener daily may boost your risk of pancreatic cancer, which is nearly always fatal, by 67%. Same goes for sausage and other processed meats.



The Perfect Cancer-fighting Salad

Can you spot the cancer fighters at the salad bar? Build yourself some powerful protection with these ingredients.

Start with leafy greens. They contain a hefty amount of the B vitamin folate, which has been shown to reduce one's chances of getting colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers. In one study, researchers at Vanderbilt University found that women who ate the mostly dark greens were among the least likely to get breast cancer. Apparently, folate can halt changes in DNA that trigger runaway cell growth, the main characteristic of cancer.

A Carrot A Day - In a study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, women who ate just five servings of four raw carrot sticks a week had a 54% decrease in their risk of getting ovarian cancer, compared with women who ate them less than once a month. Carrots may also reduce your risk of kidney cancer.

Serve yourself some tomatoes. If you don't feel like turning up the heat on your tomatoes, you can still get some of their cancer-shielding benefits. German research on 165 colonoscopy patients found that those who had the lowest blood level of lycopene, one of the chemicals that give tomatoes their color, had the highest rate of colorectal adenomas, a precursor to colorectal cancer. Toss a few into your guy's salad: They also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Eat Beans. Women who ate beans at least twice a week were 24% less likely to develop breast cancer than those who ate them less often, report Harvard School of Public Health researchers, who analyzed data from 90,630 people. Legumes may lessen risk of breast cancer, thanks to their ability to suppress the production of enzymes that encourage tumor growth.

Add a little fish. Want to add something hardy to your lunchtime salad? Go wild with salmon. When B6-rich foods (like salmon) are eaten with folate-filled foods (dark leafy greens), they can help reduce the recurrence of colorectal adenomas, a precursor to colorectal cancer, by 39%, a University of Arizona study found. Salmon may also help shield regular eaters from skin cancer, British research found.

Olive Oil: Mixing your favorite vinegar with olive oil can also help prevent breast cancer. Scientists from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine found that oleic acid in olive oil dramatically cuts the levels of the cancer gene Her-2/neu, associated with highly aggressive breast tumors with poor prognosis.

Garnish with citrus peel. They're like eating sunscreen - but they taste better. Limonene - a compound that gives oranges, lemons, and limes their scent - is linked to a 34% reduction in skin cancer, finds a University of Arizona study of 400 people.

FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAKE YOU SPIRITUAL

The secret to eating a healthier diet may be going to church. Yes, you read that right. Saint Louis University School of Public Health researchers find a definitive link between involvement in church and eating the most nourishing fruits and vegetables, reports Newswise.com.

"We're saying church membership or having that church community is one of the key links in the long chain of social support structures that help people eat better," lead researcher Deidre Griffith said in a news release. Specifically, the researchers found that people who frequently attended church ate 26 percent more "powerhouse" fruits and vegetables--the ones that contain the most nutrients--than people who didn't go to church. Powerhouse fruits and veggies include citrus, cruciferous (broccoli and cauliflower), and those that have the brightest colors (dark green leafy greens or bright orange carrots and cantaloupe).

While everyone in the survey ate the most popular fruits and vegetables, which are corn, iceberg lettuce, and bananas, it was the frequent church-goers who ate the most nutritious foods. "The body is your temple and we should treat it that way," Griffith said. "Church can be a big part of your support system for changing your diet." Most Deadly Cancer Nixed by 1 Vitamin: Folate?

Pancreatic cancer, arguably one of the deadliest forms of cancer with just a 4 percent survival rate over five years, could possibly be prevented by increasing levels of dietary folate from food, Reuters reports of a very large, population-based study of men and women from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The catch is that supplements don't seem to make a difference and might even be harmful.

Folate, which is also called folic acid, is a B vitamin found naturally in spinach, asparagus, chickpeas, kidney beans and lentils and added to numerous grain products, such as flour, rice, pasta, cold cereals and cornmeal. Previous research has shown it may protect us from colorectal and breast cancer.

Researchers have found yet another health benefit of folate--especially for women who drink alcohol.

The study: Led by Dr. Susanna C. Larsson, the Swedish team followed 36,616 women and 45,306 men who were between 45 and 83 years old in 1997 to determine if folate also protects against pancreatic cancer.

The subjects were already enrolled in the Swedish Mammography Cohort or the Cohort of Swedish Men for which they had completed food frequency questionnaires. The group was followed for 6.8 years, and during that time 135 cases of pancreatic cancer occurred.

The results: Even when such influences as demographics, smoking, body mass index, diabetes, exercise and the amount of dietary fruit, vegetables, calories, carbohydrates and alcohol were factored in, those who consumed the most dietary folate (350 micrograms per day or more) were 75 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer, compared with those who had the lowest intake (200 micrograms per day). Folate derived from supplements had no effect.

Eating this spice could help prevent and possibly even cure cancer, according to researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Click to find out what it is. Why does the folate have to be from food to work? Larsson speculates that food sources better represent long-term folate intake than do the supplements, which may be taken for only a short time. In addition, high quantities of folate supplements may actually promote the progression of cancer if it's already there. The study findings were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

If you do these nine things--or at least most of them--you will greatly reduce your risk of getting cancer and dying from it.

Being Tall May Heighten Risk of Testicular Cancer

July 14, 2000 -- Being tall is usually considered a benefit -- we speak of someone being "tall, dark and handsome," and research has shown that tall people get offered better jobs and are seen as more confident and attractive. But height may be a disadvantage in one area: new research shows that tall men are more likely to develop testicular cancer.

The Swedish study of more than 400,000 men indicates that the taller a man is, the greater his risk of developing testicular cancer. Men who were overweight, meanwhile, seemed to develop the disease less often. The researchers were searching for clues to the causes of testicular cancer, which became twice as common in the 1990s as it was in the 1970s.

"The incidence of testicular cancer has been increasing markedly among many populations worldwide for as long as cancer occurrence has been assessed," says researcher Olof Akre, MD, PhD. "The cause of this increase, however, remains unknown." Akre is a medical epidemiologist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Akre and colleagues analyzed data from a registry of more than 600,000 Norwegian men that was begun in 1963 and which included measurements of each man's height and weight. The data were then correlated with information from the cancer registry in Norway. Akre speculates that the connection between height and testicular cancer might be linked to growth hormone levels during puberty. And other hormones associated with obesity may explain the protection against testicular cancer seen in obese men, he says.

"This is a very interesting finding," says Matthew Allaway, MD, PhD, a urologist at West Virginia University. "I don't know why this association is seen, but it may have something to do with hormonal levels at puberty. I'm really interested in why we are seeing this increase in testicular cancer, and I believe it should be studied in greater depth because it may offer some clues to how other types of cancers should be treated." The treatment of testicular cancer, Allaway says, is "one of the great success stories in oncology. Even in men with advanced disease, chemotherapy is almost always effective." That doesn't mean, however, that men should ignore problems or hope they go away. Early detection virtually always results in a better outcome."

Allaway is a proponent of testicular self-examination, beginning when men are in their teens. "All teen-agers should be taught to examine their testicles each month, just as women do breast self-exams.

"The best place to do the exam is in the shower, by simply rolling the testicles between the fingers and feeling for any changes," he explains. "It's best to do the exam at about the same time each month." Male teens or their parents should ask a physician to teach the teens about testicular self-exams during routine health exams.

Could the association between height and testicular cancer be explained by genetics? After all, height is at least partially genetically determined.

No, says Stephanie Han, MD, a therapeutic radiologist at Yale University. Research has shown that genetics are a factor in very few cases of testicular cancer, she says. "In anyone with a family history, I would be more suspicious, but right now, I think self-examination is the best method for early detection," she says.

Pepper Component Hot Enough To Trigger Suicide In Prostate Cancer CellsCapsaicin, the stuff that turns up the heat in jalapeños, not only causes the tongue to burn, it also drives prostate cancer cells to kill themselves, according to studies published in the March 15 issue of Cancer

According to a team of researchers from the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in collaboration with colleagues from UCLA, the pepper component caused human prostate cancer cells to undergo programmed cell death or apoptosis.

Capsaicin induced approximately 80 percent of prostate cancer cells growing in mice to follow the molecular pathways leading to apoptosis. Prostate cancer tumors treated with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in non-treated mice.

"Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture," said Sören Lehmann, M.D., Ph.D., visiting scientist at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine. "It also dramatically slowed the development of prostate tumors formed by those human cell lines grown in mouse models."

Lehmann estimated that the dose of pepper extract fed orally to the mice was equivalent to giving 400 milligrams of capsaicin three times a week to a 200 pound man, roughly equivalent to between three and eight fresh habañera peppers – depending on the pepper's capsaicin content. Habañeras are the highest rated pepper for capsaicin content according to the Scoville heat index. Habañero peppers, which are native to the Yucatan, typically contain up to 300,000 Scoville units. The more popular Jalapeño variety from Oaxaca, Mexico, and the southwest United States, contains 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units.

As described in their study, the scientists observed that capsaicin inhibited the activity of NF-kappa Beta, a molecular mechanism that participates in the pathways leading to apoptosis in many cell types.Apoptosis is a normal cellular event in many tissues that maintains a balance between newer replacement cells and aged or worn cells. In contrast, cancer cells seek to be immortal and often dodge apoptosis by mutating or deregulating the genes that participate in programmed cell death.

"When we noticed that capsaicin affected NF-kappa Beta, that was an indication that we might expect some of the apoptotic proteins to be affected," said the study's senior author, Phillip Koeffler, M.D., director of Hematology and Oncology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and professor at UCLA.

The pepper extract also curbed the growth of prostate cancer cells through regulation of androgen receptors, the steroid activated proteins that control expression of specific growth relating genes.

In prostate cancer cells whose growth is dependent on testosterone, the predominant male sex steroid, capsaicin reduced cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Increased concentrations of capsaicin caused more prostate cancer cells to freeze in a non-proliferative state, called G0/G1.

Prostate cancer cells that are androgen independent reacted to capsaicin in a similar manner. Capsaicin reduced the amount of androgen receptor that the tumor cells produced, but did not interfere with normal movement of androgen receptor into the nucleus of the cancer cells where the steroid receptor acts to regulate androgen target genes such as prostate specific antigen (PSA). Capsaicin also interfered with the action of androgen receptors even in cells that were modified to produce excess numbers of androgen receptors.

The hot pepper component also reduced cancer cell production of PSA, a protein that often is produced in high quantities by prostate tumors and can signal the presence of prostate cancer in men. PSA content in the blood of men is used as a diagnostic prostate cancer screening measure. PSA is regulated by androgens, and capsaicin limited androgen-induced increases of PSA in the cancer cell lines.

More men in the United States develop prostate cancer than any other type of malignancy. Every year, more than 232,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the U.S., and more than 680,000 develop the disease worldwide. Approximately 30,000 men die from prostate cancer in the U.S. each year, which is about 13 percent of all new cases. Worldwide, there are 221,000 deaths – approximately 31 per cent – among men with prostate cancer.

Lehman conducted the studies in Koeffler's laboratory in collaboration with UCLA cancer researchers Akio Mori, James O'Kelly, Takishi Kumagai, Julian Desmond, Milena Pervan, and William McBride. Mosahiro Kizaki, a former post-doctoral fellow in Koeffler's laboratory who initiated the capsaicin studies, is currently at the Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan.

Maybe there IS something you can do to greatly reduce your risk of ever getting cancer.Researchers from the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota have identified 12 specific things we can do to potentially reduce the risk of getting cancer and dying from it.

Based on a 13-year-old study of nearly 30,000 older Americans, the bottom line results are simple: Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle. Although the study involved older persons, the researchers are quick to note that it is highly plausible the findings could be replicated in younger adults. Living healthy is easier said than done. The 12 recommendations work best if you do all of them (or almost all of them).

Those who followed just one or none of the recommendations had a 35 percent higher risk of developing cancer than those who faithfully practiced at least six of the recommendations, according to James Cerhan, M.D., Ph.D., head of Mayo Clinic Cancer Center's genetic epidemiology and risk assessment program and leader of the research study. Those who followed none of the recommendations had a 42 percent higher risk of dying from cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in two Americans will develop cancer in their lifetime, and one-in-three will die from it. This year, nearly 659,000 women will be diagnosed with cancer, not including non-melanoma skin cancers. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in women overall, and the leading cause of death among women between the ages of 40 and 79.

But Cerhan says, "Our findings indicate that even at an older age, women who choose to eat and live healthier can reduce their risk of developing or dying from cancer. We think this is very positive, empowering news."

Boron May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

April 5, 2001 -- Red wine, almonds, coffee, and certain fruits and nuts rich in a nutrient called boron may help stave off prostate cancer, preliminary research suggests.

While researchers are not sure exactly how boron lowers risk for prostate cancer, the new study shows that men who consumed the greatest amount of boron were 64% less likely to develop prostate cancer, when compared with men who consumed the least amount of boron in the study. The findings were presented this week at the Experimental Biology conference in Orlando, Fla.

The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be about 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer in this country in the year 2000, and about 31,900 men will die of this disease. Boron is a naturally occurring trace element that is believed to play a role in certain cellular processes involved in cancer protection.

"This is the very first study relating dietary boron intake and cancer risk," says lead researcher Zuo-Fen Zhang, MD, PhD, director of the Cancer Epidemiology Training Program at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health.[MY NOTE - See "The cancer Answer" Based on an Almond diet]

While cautioning that the findings are preliminary, he tells WebMD that "there was a big reduction of prostate cancer in people who consumed the greatest amount of boron."

And those men in the study who ate the second-highest and third-highest amount of boron also had a lower risk than men in the study who consumed the least amount of boron, he says.

To arrive at their findings, the researchers compared dietary patterns of 76 men with prostate cancer to that of 7,651 males without cancer. Men in the lowest quartile of boron consumption ate roughly one slice of fruit per day, while those in the highest quartile consumed 3.5 servings of fruit per day.

"We see this association is very specific to prostate cancer," he says. "We did not observe any association for boron and colon/rectal, breast, uterine, cervical or skin cancer," Zhang says. The researchers used data from the large-scale, ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination study to draw these conclusions.

The next step, he says, is to repeat the findings in a larger study to see if the results hold.So what should you do in the meantime?

"Eat a balanced diet that especially includes fruits and nuts," says another study researcher

Charlene Rainey, the president of Food Research Inc. of Costa Mesa, Calif. And remember that boron is anything but boring, she says.

There's something for everyone when it comes to boron-rich foods."Almonds, peanuts, peanut butter, grapes, raisins, grape juice, dried fruits, dried nuts, and legumes are rich in boron," she says. "Red wine is also a very good source of boron," she says. Some of the compounds found in red wine also have been shown to lower risk for heart disease when it is consumed in moderation.

Coffee and milk also contain some boron, she says.

"Structurally, fruits and vegetables contain lots of micronutrients and ingredients that seem to have a protective effect, and we have added boron to the list," says another study researcher Curtis Eckhert, PhD, chair of the department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA school of Public Health and the chair of boron research at the meeting.

"It came out to be protective against prostate cancer," he says.

"It seems that people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables in their diet have a lower risk of certain types of cancer," says Ruth Kava, RD, PhD, the director of nutrition for the American Council on Science and Health, based in New York City.

Boron is virtually an "unknown nutrient," she says, adding that this is "an interesting study that is going to be the basis of further research."

Kava points out that there currently is not enough known about boron to establish a recommended daily allowance

"It's way too early to say much of anything so far about the possible health effects of boron, [but] there are reasons to think from animal studies that it could be important in growth and development," she tells WebMD.

Viruses: Surprising Cause of 18% of All Cancers

Nearly one-fifth of all types of cancer worldwide are caused by just a handful of viruses, bacteria and parasites, Reuters Health reports of new research from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Specifically, 17.9 percent of cancer cases globally in 2002 were caused by infections ranging from HIV to the ulcer bug Helicobacter pylori.

Most Americans don't realize that THIS is one of the leading causes of cancer. Do you? The good news:**** If **** the infections can be prevented, then many cases of cancer could be avoided, especially in developing nations. Study leader Dr. Donald Maxwell Parkin says that a massive 1.9 million cases of cancer in 2002 are directly attributable to these preventable viral and bacterial infections.

1] The No. 1 culprit is H. pylori, a bacterium that causes stomach ulcers that can lead to stomach cancer, which is responsible for 5.5 percent of all cancers worldwide.

2] human papilloma viruses (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer, and the

3] hepatitis B and C viruses, which cause 85.5 percent of liver cancers.

4] The Epstein-Barr virus accounted for 1 percent of cancers in 2002, most notably Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal cancer. HIV infection can lead to variety of cancers, including lymphoma, Kaposi's sarcoma and cervical cancer.

Pomegranate Juice May Prevent Cancer

If lab results translate to real-world benefits, it appears that pomegranate juice will be the next big health drink.

Pomegranate extract shows major promise in preventing prostate cancer or slowing its growth, according to researchers at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Prostate cancer is the most common invasive cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men.

Why pomegranates? This fruit that is native to the Middle East is packed with polyphenolic compounds, which makes its juice higher in antioxidant activity than both red wine and green tea.

The Wisconsin research team wanted to find out if the extract from pomegranates would not only kill existing cancer, but also help prevent cancer from starting or progressing. Using human prostate cancer cells, the team first evaluated the fruit extract's effect at various doses on those cells cultured in laboratory dishes.

They found a "dose-dependent" effect. That is, the higher the dose of pomegranate extract the cells received, the more cells that died.

The research team then progressed to tests in mice that had been injected with prostate cancer cells from humans and developed malignancies. The 24 mice were randomly divided into three groups. 1] The control group received normal drinking water, 2] while the animals in the second and third groups had their drinking water supplemented with 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent pomegranate extract respectively. 3] The doses for the mice were chosen to parallel how much pomegranate juice a typically healthy human might be willing to eat or drink daily.

The results were dramatic: The mice receiving the higher concentration of pomegranate extract showed significant slowing of their cancer progression and a decrease in the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a marker used to indicate the presence of prostate cancer in humans. The animals that received only water had tumors that grew much faster than those in the animals treated with pomegranate extract.

"Our study--while early--adds to growing evidence that pomegranates contain very powerful agents against cancer, particularly prostate cancer," lead author Dr. Hasan Mukhtar, professor of dermatology in the UW Medical School, said in a news release. "There is good reason now to test this fruit in humans both for cancer prevention and for treatment." And that is the next step these researchers will undertake.

The study findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Eat This. Cut Breast Cancer Risk in Half

Eat your fiber. It could be a key weapon in preventing breast cancer. A diet rich in fiber--especially whole wheat bread and whole grain cereals--has been shown to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer for pre-menopausal women, according to a seven-year study of 35,000 women by researchers at the University of Leeds in England. Those who ate the most fiber--30 grams a day--cut their risk of breast cancer in half, compared with those who ate less than 20 grams, report the BBC News and News-Medical.net.

Young women who have not yet reached menopause have a far higher risk of developing breast cancer if they eat this every day. What does it take to eat 30 grams of fiber a day? For starters, the average person eats about 12 grams. So you'll need to eat a lot more! To eat 30 grams, start your day with a high-fiber breakfast cereal, eat a sandwich made with whole wheat bread for lunch and have five servings of fruit and vegetables throughout the day.

A diet rich in whole grains can also help you lose weight! Find out how. The study: Using a 217-item food questionnaire, researchers from the University of Leeds Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics monitored the eating habits and health of more than 35,000 women ages 35 to 69 for seven years. Just under 16,000 of the women were pre-menopausal and the rest were post-menopausal. The women had a range of diets, including some who were vegetarian and never ate red meat.

Find out the No. 1 way women can avoid getting breast cancer. The results: During the seven-year study, 257 of the 16,000 pre-menopausal women developed breast cancer. These women, more than any of the others, had a greater percentage of energy that was derived from protein, as well as a lower consumption of dietary fiber and vitamin C, compared with those who did not get breast cancer.

Among the post-menopausal women, 350 developed breast cancer, but the protective dietary effect was not seen among them. "Our study found no protective effect in the older group, but significant evidence of a link in the pre-menopausal women," lead study author Janet Cade told the BBC News. "The relevant exposure may be earlier in life, explaining why the protective effect was not shown in the post-menopausal group. In addition, post-menopausal women with high body mass indexes [who are overweight or obese] have an increased risk of breast cancer. Their weight may override any other effects such as benefits from fiber."

Dietary fiber appears to affect how the body processes and regulates estrogen and offers protective antioxidant properties. The No. 1 Way to Not Get Breast Cancer

There is one thing more than any other that women can do throughout their lives to protect themselves from breast cancer: Don't gain weight.

Women who gain weight after they reach menopause increase their risk of developing invasive breast cancer by 18 percent, while women who lost and kept off 22 pounds or more since menopause and did not take hormones actually reduced their risk by 57 percent. Why? Weight loss after menopause lowers circulating estrogen hormones in women, and because estrogen is directly related to breast cancer, weight loss is thought to decrease risk of the disease.But lifetime weight gain also counts. Women who gained 55 pounds or more since age 18, upped their risk of breast cancer by 45 percent, compared with those who maintained their weight. There was an even stronger association among women who never took postmenopausal hormones.

That's the word from researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, who analyzed data from the long-running Nurses' Health Study to assess the risk of breast cancer from weight gain during two stages of life--since 18 years of age and since menopause. A total of 87,143 postmenopausal women ages 30 to 55 years were followed for up to 26 years to analyze weight change since age 18. Weight change since menopause was assessed among 49,514 women, who were followed for up to 24 years. During this period, there were 2,376 cases of invasive breast cancer among postmenopausal women in the study.

The bottom line: The researchers concluded that 15 percent of the study's breast cancer cases may be attributable to weight gain of 4.4 pounds or more since age 18 and 4.4 percent of the cases may be attributable to weight gain of 4.4 pounds or more since menopause.

"These data suggest that weight gain during adult life, specifically since menopause, increases the risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women, whereas weight loss after menopause is associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer," lead study author A. Heather Eliassen writes in Journal of the American Medical Association.

This Food May Stop Breast Cancer Cold

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have determined that a compound found in broccoli and Brussels sprouts, called sulforaphane, hinders the growth of human breast cancer cells in the laboratory, reports Reuters.

This magic bullet worked by disrupting the action of protein "microtubules" within the cancer cells, which are vital for the success of cell division and growth. What is most intriguing about this finding is that certain cancer drugs work in a similar way. That means it's quite possible that sulforaphane could be used in combination with other compounds or drugs to prevent and treat cancer.

This isn't the first time scientists have shown sulforaphane helps prevent cancer. Previous research has also proven that the compound blocks the formation of breast tumors in rats, and it can even force colon cancer cells to commit cell suicide. It seems that sulforaphane works its magic on the detoxification enzymes that try to defend the cancer-promoting substances.

This latest research suggests there is a new mechanism for sulforaphane to battle cancer cells called microtubule disruption. And that is what co-study author Dr. Keith Singletary, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois, finds most intriguing since microtubule disruption is exactly how certain types of cancer drugs work. What if those cancer drugs were combined with sulforaphane to work in combination for an even more powerful effect?

So the big question remains: If you eat a diet that is rich in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and other sulforaphane-containing foods, will your risk for developing breast cancer decrease? Scientists aren't ready to say that. However, numerous studies have linked a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits to a lower risk of cancer, including breast cancer. What still is not known is which specific vegetables work best for preventing cancer.

That said, it won't hurt you to load up on broccoli, and it may very well be a lifesaving side dish you enjoy with dinner tonight.

Scary News for Left-Handed Women

Left-handed women are more than twice as likely as those who are right-handed to suffer from breast cancer before reaching menopause, according to researchers at the University Medical Center in Utrecht in the Netherlands.

The study: Over an 18-year period, the researchers examined the link between handedness and incidence of breast cancer in more than 12,000 healthy, middle-aged women who were born between 1932 and 1941. Body measurements were taken and risk factors, such as social and economic status, smoking habits, family history of breast cancer, and reproductive history were recorded. About 8 to 9 percent of all women are left-handed.

The results: They found that left-handed women were more than twice as likely to develop premenopausal breast cancer as right-handed women. (About 75 percent of breast cancer cases occur after menopause, which typically begins around age 50.) Adjusting for risk factors hardly affected the overall association.

What would handedness have to do with the development of breast cancer? The origin of the association may lie in exposure to high levels of sex hormones before birth, which can induce left-handedness as well as changes in breast tissue, say the authors. "Although the underlying mechanisms remain elusive, our results support the hypothesis that left-handedness is related to increased risk of breast cancer," the researchers write in the British Medical Journal.

Lead study author Cuno Uiterwaal is the first to say left-handed women should not be alarmed by the findings. "What our study intends to do is focus on this area," he told Reuters in an interview. "We do not know all the causes of breast cancer; that is why we should continue. This may be one new factor that leads us to a better understanding of the aetiology (cause of the illness)." Additional research is needed to determine if this relationship is real and if there is an explanation for it.

Study: Hair Dye Boosts Risk of Cancer

Dyeing your hair appears to increase your risk of developing a type of cancer called lymphoma, Reuters reports of a study conducted at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain that confirms similar findings from earlier research studies.

The study: Led by Dr. Silvia de Sanjose, the team analyzed results from another study of 4,719 people from six European countries, half of whom had lymphoma and half of whom were matched healthy controls. In this study, 75 percent of the women reported using hair dye, while 7 percent of the men did.

The results: Among those who used hair dye, there was a 19 percent increased risk of lymphoma, but that risk jumped to 26 percent among those who used it 12 or more times during the year. Those who started dyeing their hair prior to 1980 had a 37 percent increased risk of developing lymphoma, while those who only dyed their hair before 1980 had a 62 percent increased risk. Based on this, the team concluded that about 10 percent of lymphoma cases in women are caused by using hair dye.

Why 1980? It was between 1978 and 1982 that formulas were changed for certain types of hair dyes that contained potentially cancer-causing agents. Still, de Sanjose notes that it is not certain new dyes are totally risk-free. "Our data suggest that personal use of hair coloring is associated with a small increase in lymphoma risk, particularly among women who started using hair coloring products before 1980," de Sanjose wrote in the American Journal of Epidemiology. She emphasized that more research is needed.

Eat This. It's an Anti-Aging Superfood

Eat your blueberries! This delicious fruit is not only considered an anti-aging superfood, but also helps prevent colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and Great Britain.

The magic ingredient appears to be a potent antioxidant called pterostilbene, which is found in the pigment that gives blueberries their rich purple color, according to researchers from Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While blueberries won't cure colon cancer, they could go a long way toward preventing it.

"This study underscores the need to include more berries in the diet, especially blueberries," said lead study author Dr. Bandaru Reddy. Rising rates of colon cancer in Western countries have been linked to high-fat, high-calorie diets.

The study: Eighteen rats were injected with azoxymethane, a colon cancer-causing compound. For eight weeks, half the rats were given a balanced daily diet, while the other half were fed the same diet supplemented with pterostilbene.

The results: The rats that were fed pterostilbene had 57 percent fewer pre-cancerous lesions in their colons, compared to the rats who only received the balanced diet without pterostilbene. In addition, the compound appeared to reduce the growth rate of the cancerous cells, as well as inhibited certain genes involved in inflammation, both of which are implicated in the development of the disease. The findings are so promising scientists are hopeful a blueberry-based preventative pill for colon cancer can soon be developed, which would have far fewer side effects than current commercial medications.

And if that's not enough reason to sprinkle a few blueberries on your morning cereal, consider this: Previous research has shown that blueberries also improve short-term memory loss, enhance balance and coordination and help prevent heart disease.

Vitamin D Reduces Cancer Risk Study Shows Risks of Several Types of Cancer Cut in Older PersonsBy TIMBERLY ROSS AND JEFF DONN, AP 18 June 2007

OMAHA, Neb. - Building hope for one pill to prevent many cancers, vitamin D cut the risk of several types of cancer by 60 percent overall for older Americans in the most rigorous study yet. The new research strengthens the case made by some specialists that vitamin D may be a powerful cancer preventive and most people should get more of it.

"The findings ... are a breakthrough of great medical and public health importance," declared Cedric Garland, a prominent vitamin D researcher at the University of California-San Diego. "No other method to prevent cancer has been identified that has such a powerful impact."

The study takes an important step in extending several decades of research that began with observations that cancer rates among similar groups of people were lower in southern latitudes than in northern ones. Scientists reasoned that had to do with more direct sunlight in southern regions.

The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight's ultraviolet rays [NOTE-I: Sunlight makes D3 in the oil, on the skin - not on dry skin scrubbed with soap-&-hot-water!]. This study used that same form of the vitamin, known as D3 or cholecalciferol. Multivitamins usually carry a much weaker variant known as D2, but D3 is available in stand-alone dietary supplements.

[NOTE-II: D3 is actually a hormone - not a vitamin [and very similar to testosterone! Doctors have a hard time admitting error, accepting truth, and changing - just like Christians keep calling the Mourner’s Bench an “altar” - when the ONLY Christian altar is the Cross of Christ.]

Earlier research has shown that vitamin D helps regulate cell growth, a fundamental biological process that goes haywire in cancer. Most other supplements have tended to target specific types of disease in early testing, like selenium or vitamin E for prostate cancer.

This study, published Friday in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, is the first time that researchers significantly boosted - and measured - blood levels of vitamin D and then followed identical groups of patients from start to finish.

That's why the research was generating excitement. Nearly all other work has compared disparate groups of patients.

The researchers at Creighton University in Omaha focused on 1,179 seemingly healthy patients with an average age of 67. The patients were divided into three groups: 446 got calcium and vitamin D3 supplements, a similar number got calcium alone, and 288 took dummy pills.

The research team gave 1,000 daily international units of vitamin D, more than current guidelines calling for 200 to 600 units depending on a person's age.CANCER -2

The researchers intended to check mainly for the effects of calcium on bone health. Their interest in cancer risk was secondary. But the lower cancer risk stood out. Only 13 patients, or 3 percent, developed cancer over four years of calcium and vitamin D supplements. With calcium alone, 17 patients, or 4 percent, got cancer. With dummy pills, cancer appeared in 20 patients, or 7 percent.

That shows a 60 percent lower cancer risk over four years in the group taking both supplements, compared to patients taking placebos. And when the first-year cancers were excluded - the ones mostly likely present before the study began - the findings were stronger still: a 77 percent lower risk for the combo group.

While the calcium-only group lowered its four-year cancer risk by 47 percent compared to the untreated group, it did no better when early cancers were excluded. That suggests calcium alone may have done little in this experiment, the researchers said.

Experts reviewing the study focused on vitamin D3 as the powerful agent in the combo group, but it can't be ruled out that calcium might somehow amplify the effect of vitamin D3.

While the number were limited, these patients developed a broad range of cancers, including cancer of the breast, colon, lungs and blood. Dr. Michael Holick, of Boston University Medical Center, who sat on the professional panel that issued the 1997 guidelines for vitamin D, said this study shows that enough vitamin D "markedly reduces the risk of developing the most serious deadly cancers."

He supports raising the recommended amount of the vitamin and said 1,000 daily units of vitamin D3 would now be reasonable for most people. Some recommends up to 4000 units for those who already have cancer while others, such as Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society, cautioned overdosing vitamin D3, that more than 2,000 units is viewed in the guidelines as potentially dangerous.

Joan Lappe, the study's lead researcher, said it "just adds to the great bunch of evidence that we need to have better vitamin D nutrition." Some foods carry the vitamin, like salmon, tuna and fortified milk, but diet accounts for little of the vitamin circulating in the body. Conversely, overexposure to the sun can cause skin cancer.

Still, people should consult their doctors before boosting their vitamin dosage, several experts also warned.

More study is needed to determine if the effects in this study hold true for large groups of people and men as well as women.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:I still strongly endorse progesterone, however I think the cream version has potential complications particularly by the way it accumulates and contributes to disruptions in the adrenal hormones such as DHEA, cortisol, and testosterone. I have learned that although progesterone cream is an enormously useful tool, it needs to be used very cautiously. So, if one is going to use the cream they absolutely need to be monitored with a saliva test on an annual basis. The saliva value should be below 300. I have seen numbers over 10,000 and it may take up to two years for this level to normalize as the progesterone is stored in the fat and comes out very slowly. One should not resume progesterone (in any form) until the level drops below 300 again.

Highlights from my time with Dr. John LeeWell I had the great privilege of dining with Dr. Lee on Friday and lecturing with him on Saturday. I was expecting to learn some exciting new information and I was not disappointed. There are two major highlights to review. I am even more convinced now of the value of natural progesterone for women and even for men as I will discuss later.

The most exciting information though has to do with progesterone's ability to PREVENT and REVERSE many cancers. The newer studies show that estrogen, specifically A] estradiol, does not increase the risk for breast cancer but it actually CAUSES breast cancer AND prostate cancer. B] There is not any debate left about this issue. All major researchers have found this C] The information on the prostate is new.

Let me attempt to explain the relationship for prostate cancer in more detail. Men also make estrogen and estradiol, but in much lower amounts than women. The male hormone, testosterone, is antagonist to estradiol.

Testosterone prevents estradiol from causing prostate cancer by destroying the prostate cancer cells it stimulates.

Testosterone does NOT cause prostate cancer. If this were true 19 and 20 year old males would be developing prostate cancer as these are the individuals with the highest levels. This is obviously not the case.

Males also produce progesterone, although about half as much as females do.

***** The progesterone prevents the body from converting testosterone to di-hydro testosterone. It does this by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. *****

*****Progesterone inhibits 5 alpha reductase far more effectively than Proscar and Saw Palmetto *****which are the more standard agents employed in traditional and natural medicine.

As a male ages, his progesterone level decreases just like it does in women. In women this decease occurs about the age of 35 and men about 45

When progesterone levels decrease, the male's 5 alpha reductase converts the testosterone to di-hydro testosterone which is useless at removing the prostate cancer cells that estradiol stimulates.

Estradiol also stimulates the enlargement of the prostate. This allows the prostate gland to swell and enlarge and in many cases transform into prostate cancer.

The prostate is embryologically similar to the female uterus. Prostate cancer is the NUMBER ONE cancer in men. Prostate enlargement is a major cause of problems in elderly men. It appears we now have a simple, safe inexpensive solution to prevent and treat this problem.

Dr. Lee's has a large number of anecdotal stories of complete reversals of metastatic prostatic cancers. The clinical research has just begun. Dr. Lee states that there are several studies that will be published in the peer reviewed literature very shortly confirming this observation in animal studies.

There is no need to wait for these studies as there is strong biochemical evidence to support this recommendation. The January 28 JAMA had an article To die or not to die? most cells in the body die through a more subtle, non-inflammatory, energy-dependent form of cell death called apoptosis.

Recent research into the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis has revealed that apoptosis is a genetically programmed process that can become deranged when the components of the cellular apoptotic machinery are mutated or present in inappropriate quantities. Dysregulation of apoptosis is associated with the cause of a wide array of diseases: cancer, neurodegeneration, autoimmunity, heart disease, and other disorders.

All cells, with the exception of brain and muscle cells, multiply continuously. The genes which regulates this cell growth are p53 and bcl2 . If the gene bcl2 dominates it will push cells to cancer. If gene p53 dominates the opposite will occur and the cell growth is controlled and the cancer do not occur.

The article clearly shows that traditional chemotherapy using poisons to stop cell hyperplasia do not work as they kill normal cells easier than cancer cells. The new idea promoted by the review is to find agents that activate p53 and deactivate bc12 is the hope for curing cancer.

Well folks, guess what the research shows??? Estradiol turns on the cancer gene bc12 and Progesterone turns on the anti-cancer gene p53!!! Breast cancer cells do not multiply when women are on progesterone.

These hormones also worked for cancer of the ovary and uterus and small cell lung cancer which is normally a very difficult cancer to treat with a horribly dismal diagnosis.

This is MAJOR news and will provide a radical shift in my recommendations for hormonal replacement.

I now believe that nearly all men should seriously consider natural progesterone replacement sometime in their 40s, or even earlier if they have a family history of prostate cancer.

There is also a reasonable likelihood that this will decrease male balding. So, all the men who wish to retain what is left of their hair, I would start this immediately.

Dr. Lee has always recommended a low dose cream. Originally, I did not believe that the low dose cream was necessary and decided to reduce the patient cost by using a high dose 10% prescription cream. This made the cream very affordable but also significantly increased the risk of overdosing and causing complications.

Dr. Lee explained to me that when much higher doses are given the excess progesterone is metabolized in the liver and some of the metabolites may have an anesthetic dose on the brain. I believe that many of the patients I have prescribed the higher dose 10% cream for have experienced some of these symptoms.

The other consideration has to do with the distribution of the dose. A] The progesterone cream enters from the skin into the fat. B] The progesterone is released from the fat into the blood stream in direct proportion to the concentration of the cream. The danger of using a higher dose cream is that there will not be a smooth release of the hormone into the blood stream over the 12 hour period.

Since progesterone has a relatively short half life of five minutes once it is in the blood, this will significantly limit its effectiveness and one will only receive partial benefits from the progesterone.

His arguments are very compelling and I am changing my recommendation to the lower dose cream. The higher dose cream was $3 per month and shifting to the lower dose cream will actually increase triple the price to about $9 per month. However, I believe the benefits are significant enough to warrant the increase in cost.

There are many low dose non prescription natural progesterone creams on the market. A typical one would have about 900 mg per two ounces which is about 1.7%. Many are available in the health food store. However, one needs to be very careful that the cream indeed has natural progesterone and in the 1.7% concentration.

We will be offering one of the best low dose creams on the market, Natragest, which we obtain from Biotics Labs.

The dose of natural progesterone for men is 10 to 12 mg per day.

Men do NOT need time off like women and can take the progesterone without taking any days off.

The normal dose for women of natural progesterone should be about 20 mg per day from day 12 to 26.

These doses are split and taken twice a day If one is using the Natragest cream the 6 mg male dose would be about 1/16 of a teaspoon twice a day. The dose for women would be about twice that 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon twice a day from day 12-26. It is VERY important to be a precise as possible when administering this dose.

If you are a woman and have the older higher dose cream they can still be used but I would decrease the dose to 1/32 of a teaspoon immediately.
