George Washington, Teaching on Providence and Death:

Seven Letters to Family and Personal Friends: With Washington's Thirty Points of Doctrine following:

Introductory Note:

    First is a most profound letter by George Washington on accepting the death of a close friend and brother-in-law's sweet, young daughter . . . explaining her death 'as the Decree and Divine Will of Providence.'

    George Washington, American Apostle and ever the Theologian - always teaching, everyone, everywhere on every occasion - goes into great detail, yet extremely precise and concise, well-worded and carefully thought-out.

    Washington explaining God's Providence in such a Death, is perhaps the singular greatest treatise on this Doctrine from the reformed Point of View.

    It is obvious, George Washington took great care and much time to put together this amazing thoughts and teachings from the Word explaining the death of a child - to the parents of that child . . .

    . . . who believe in a God of love who answers prayers of His Children.

    Profoundly providential; God in His great wisdom, led General Washington to study this subject deeply, think on it intensely, and write on it powerfully - but not ONLY to be able to console the broken heart of his close friends.

    PROVIDENTIAL PREMONITION?

    Only God knew at that moment . . . but in almost two months to the day, Washington was writing to this same man . . . to inform him that shockingly, he - George Washington - had just buried his own precious young daughter Patsy;

      . . . after an immediately rapid illness and decline - within 48 short hours. And even though the Great General Washington had knelt and prayed so earnestly for her life, . . .

      Little Patsy died . . . his tears flowing downward as his prayers flowed upward . . .

    And the greatest General who ever lived was left with his own teaching on the Doctrine of Death as God's Divine Decree . . .

    . . .and his personal advice on how to handle this "lamentable decree" - his own letter to a friend as written below.

    Please keep this sudden turn of Providence in mind as you read Washington's teaching on Divine Providence of the death of a child.

    Surely God Almighty prepared George Washington's own heart and mind for the personal tragedy that was soon to come, by having him think and write deeply on this Doctrine to comfort a friend.

    George Washington: Teaching on Providence and Death

    Consider what George Washington, Theologian and 'Apostle of Providence' teaches on this Doctrine:

    [1] Death is NOT caused by human means, but by Divine DECREE;

    [2] The Decree of Death, is always by DIVINE WILL;

    [3] The PREDESTINATION - that is the carrying out - of God's Divine Will on Earth, is the 'Doctrine of Providence':

    [4] Therefore, since God's Will is immutable, as true Christians, we are realize as humans THAT God's Providence is also inscrutable;

    [5] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is absolute;

    [6] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is not even to be "scanned" - that is to be observed carefully, looking for answers to the question why, etc.;

    [7] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is too deep to be comprehended by the "eye of humanity" that is "too shallow to comprehend" Providence;

    [8] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is NOT "to be COUNTERACTED..." period;

    [9] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is NOT "to be counteracted..." by the UTMOST EFFORTS...";

    [10] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is NOT "to be counteracted by the utmost efforts of human POWER";

    [11] THAT God's Justice in His Providence is NOT "to be counteracted by the utmost efforts of human...WISDOM";

    [12] THAT rather than seeking to counteract "God's Justice in Divine Providence" we are to live in the Doctrine of "RESIGNATION to Divine Will";

    [13] THAT rather than seeking to counteract "God's Justice in Divine Providence" we are to learn in the "Doctrine of ACQUIESCENCE to Divine Will";

    [14] THAT rather than seeking to counteract "God's Justice in Divine Providence" we are to "use the strength of our REASON...in accepting" God's Providence with acquiescence;

    [15] THAT rather than seeking to counteract "God's Justice in Divine Providence" we are to "use the strength of our...RELIGION in accepting" God's Providence with acquiescence;

    [16] Furthermore, THAT rather than seeking to counteract "God's Justice in Divine Providence" - not only are we to "use the strength of our reason and religion in accepting" God's Providence with acquiescence, but we are to accept Divine Providence with "HAPPY acquiescence";

    [17] Thus the great Theologian and Apostle of Providence - George Washington [on his way to becoming the greatest human being who ever lived (outside the pages of the Bible)] - with Mhis greatest of understanding of this deepest of doctrines, uses great boldness and strongest courage - to TEACH and admonish this couple who has just lost a young daughter forever to this life:

    > > To accept this death as Divine Decree;

    > > To accept this death as Divine Justice;

    > > To accept this without seeking to understand by human means;

    > > To accept this without questioning;

    > > To accept this simply by acquiescence;

    > > To accept this tragedy happily as the children of God trusting in the Providence of God - and not worrying or asking why, because God's Providence is as inscrutable as it is immutable;

    [18] Then in continued greatest of wisdom and teaching on Providence, realizing most Christians will never growth to this spiritual height or have faith to this degree, Theologian George Washington leaves a little room for less than apostolic perfection and he teaches them - where ever they may be in this spiritual journey - that all of the previous "is what we are to aim";

    [19] Theologian George Washington then declares his faith in them as follows saying: "I am persuaded that your own GOOD SENSE will arm you with fortitude to withstand the stroke, great as it is, and enable you to console

    [20] NOT only does George Washington, Apostle of Providence link their well being and acceptance of this Doctrine of Providence to their "good sense" , but he also realizes the battle life will offer against their "happy acquiescence" - thus he uses the military terminology of battle and speaks of their being "armed" with good sense;

    [21] The Apostle of Divine Providence lastly encourages - and teaches - that this deep understanding, happy acquiescence, and being armed with "good sense" will lead to a "fortitude to withstand this great stroke (blow)"

    [22] He then promises that developing this fortitude, with all of the strength of reason and wisdom and religion and good sense will allow them to both "console" each other in this Doctrine and to be consoled thereby: also realizing that in God's Providence, though the evil one means this blow to destroy, God will use it to their advantage and blessing by and by;

    [23] The great Teacher, ins spite of this strongest admonition in the face of death of a child, Washington then allows for the natural human emotions: "the feelings of loss" that are acceptable and allowed to be "pitied";

    [24] Hearkening to George Washington's first paragraph to this bereaving family, he also allows for sympathy to be received and appreciated - in spite of "aiming for happy acquiescence":

    [25] Note that Theologian George Washington sees NO CONTRADICTION between accepting this Decree of Death as Justice, and act of Divine Will, the determination of God's Providence, and grieving and receiving sympathy for this loss;

    [26] Note that Theologian George Washington sees NO CONTRADICTION between accepting this Decree of Death as Justice, and act of Divine Will, the determination of God's Providence, and receiving sympathy for this loss and even considering this Divine Decree of Providence as a Decree "which has deprived you of so dutiful a child,";

    [27] Note further that Theologian George Washington also allows for this Divine Decree to be considered an Act of Providence to be "LAMENTED" - even though it is to be accepted with "resignation and happy acquiescence" - and sees NO CONTRADICTION between the two;

    [28] Note further that Theologian George Washington also allows for this "LAMENTATION" to be MADE, for the death, by family, friends and loved ones;

    [29] Note further that Theologian George Washington also allows for this "LAMENTATION" MADE, by family, friends and loved ones, to be RECEIVED in sympathy by those suffering the deprivation, yet being in happy acquiescence, without CONTRADICTION;

    [30] Note finally that Theologian George Washington also allows for this Act of Divine Providence - a Decree of Death according to God's Divine Will, in His unquestionable Justice - inscrutable - to be sympathized by family, friends and loved ones, to be RECEIVED in sympathy by those suffering the deprivation

    and considering this Divine Providence a 'LOSS' -yet being in happy acquiescence, without CONTRADICTION in good sense developing the fortitude to use the strength of their reason and religion, that they might CONSOLE and be Consoled thereby.

    George Washington, Teaching on Providence and Death:

    Seven Letters to family and friends:

    First, His PROVIDENTIAL PREMONITION to his Brother-in-Law whose young daughter died, just 60 days before Washington's own young daughter died!

[1] George Washington, Letter on Providence and Death of Spouse:

From George Washington To BURWELL BASSETT, from Mount Vernon, April 25, 1773. [His Brother in Law]

    Dear Sir:

    The interruption of the past for several weeks, prevented our receiving the melancholy account of your loss until within these few days. [NOTE: Their young daughter had died]

    That we sympathize in the misfortune, and lament the decree which has deprived you of so dutiful a child, and the world of so promising a young lady, stands in no need, I hope, of argument to prove;

    but the ways of Providence being inscrutable, and the Justice of it not to be scanned by the shallow eye of humanity, nor to be counteracted by the utmost efforts of human power or wisdom;

    [R]resignation, and as far as the strength of our reason and religion can carry us, a cheerful acquiescence to the Divine Will, is what we are to aim;

    and I am persuaded that your own good sense will arm you with fortitude to withstand the stroke, great as it is, and enable you to console Mrs. Bassett, whose loss and feelings are much to be pitied....

    My sincere good wishes attend Mrs. Bassett and ye family.

From George Washington To his Brother Samuel Washington from Mount Vernon, August 8, 1777.

    "I most sincerely condole with you on your late loss [of his wife]; and doubt not your feeling it in the most sensible manner;

    [N]nor do I expect that human fortitude, and reason, can so far overcome natural affection, as to enable us to look with calmness upon losses wh. [which] distress us,

    although they are acts of Providence, and in themselves unavoidable,

    yet acquiescence to the divine will is not only a duty,

    but is to be aided by every manly exertion to forget the causes of such uneasiness."
