George Washington Believed U.S. Constitution was by Providence: Therefore Sacred

George Washington Firmly Believed the U.S.Constitution was Constructed by Providence and therefore Sacred!

George Washington always believed there was a great omission in the US Constitution (more below), apart from this great error - he still believed 'two great truths' about the U.S. Constitution:

> That God had providentially overseen the construction of the U.S. Constitution,

> That the U.S. Constitution, thus being the work of Providence (though imperfect due to human obstinance), was still a "Sacred Document" - (somewhat like ancient Israel, though imperfectly obedient, were still God's Chosen People, thus a sacred nation).

===President Washington declared Constitution 'Greatest Act of Providence':

> That Invisible Hand, which has 'so often interposed to save our Country from impending destruction',

seems in no instance to have been more remarkably excited than in that of disposing the people of this extensive Continent to adopt, in a peaceable manner, a Constitution,

which if well administered, bids fair to make America a happy nation."

[SOURCE: George Washington- Letter to Philip Schuyler, May 9, 1789].

===President Washington declared Constitution 'Sacred':

Should, hereafter, those incited by the lust of power and prompted by the Supineness or venality of their Constituents, overleap the known barriers of this Constitution and violate The Inalienable Rights of Humanity:

It will only serve to shew, that no compact among men, (however 'Provident' in its construction and 'Sacred' in its ratification).

- can be pronounced everlasting an inviolable, and if I may so express myself, that no Wall of words, that no mound of parchment can be so formed as to stand against the sweeping torrent of boundless ambition on the side, aided by the sapping current of corrupted morals on the other."

[SOURCE: George Washington - Draft of First Inaugural Address, April, 1789].

===Because George Washington believed the previous, he therefore concluded the following:

"The Constitution which at any time exists, 'till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People, is 'Sacredly Obligatory upon All'."

George Washington at First was Devastated by US Constitution's 'Omission':

George Washington to GENERAL MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE, Philadelphia, September 18, 1787.

My dear Marquis: In the midst of hurry, and in the moment of my departure from this City [Philadelphia, ending the Constitutional Convention], I address this letter to you.

The principal, indeed the only design of it, is to fulfil the promise I made, that I would send to you the proceedings of the Foederal convention, as soon as the business was closed. More than this, circumstanced as I am at present, it is not in my power to do. Nor am I inclined to attempt it, as the enclosure, must speak for itself, and will occupy your thoughts for some time.

[Note: The Constitutional Convention had Dunlap & Claypoole print 500 copies of the Constitution after it had been engrossed on parchment and signed. The inclosure above was, doubtless, one of these. ]

It [US Constitution] is the production of four months deliberation. It is now a Child of fortune, to be fostered by some and buffeted by others.

What will be the General opinion on, or the reception of it, is not for me to decide,

nor shall I say any thing for or against it:

if it be good I suppose it will work its way good;

if bad, it will recoil on the Framers.

My best wishes attend you, and yours; and with the sincerest friendship and most Affectionate regard etc. 6

[Note: From the "Letter Book" copy in the Washington Papers.Washington left Philadelphia in the afternoon of September 18 for Mount Vernon, which he reached about sunset on Saturday the 22d.]

George Washington conveys Reservation To Patrick Henry:

George Washington to PATRICK HENRY Mount Vernon, September 24, 1787.

Dear Sir: In the first moment after my return I take the liberty of sending you a copy of the Constitution which the foederal Convention has submitted to the People of these States.

I accompany it with no observations;

[Y]your own Judgment will at once discover the good, and the exceptionable parts of it.

And your experience of the difficulties, which have ever arisen when attempts have been made to reconcile such variety of Interests and local prejudices as pervade the several States will render explanation unnecessary.

I wish the Constitution which is offered had been made more perfect,

===

This same letter was also sent to Benjamin Harrison and Thomas Nelson.

===

George Washington conveys Reservation To Thomas Jefferson:

George Washington to THOMAS JEFFERSON, Philadelphia, September 18, 1787.

Dear Sir: Yesterday put an end to the business of the Foederal Convention. Inclosed is a copy of the Constitution by it agreed to,

[N]not doubting but that you have participated in the general anxiety which has agitated the minds of your Countrymen on this interesting occasion, I shall be excused I am certain for this endeavor to relieve you from it; especially when I assure you of the sincere regard and esteem with which I have the honor, etc. 2

[Note: From the "Letter Book" copy in the Washington Papers].

In writing to Jefferson, Washington had nothing good to say about the US. Constitution. Why would this be? It seems he would have been overcome with joy, as the constitution is now lauded today by those in many lands.

What was Washington's great reservation?

Washington Firmly Believed in the "Religious Test"

It will seem strange in this modern secular society - even to Bible Believers who now accept agnostics, atheists, homosexuals and Christ-haters as politicians, but for the first 200 years of the American Colonies it was not so.

All of American Society, as stated in all 13 of the State Constitutions, believed a person must believe in God and eternal judgement, a final day of accountability, of reward and punishment, to have the very highest motivation to 'tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!'

Thus atheists, agnostics, and those who did not believe these things were as follows:

> not allowed to vote

> not allowed to testify in court

> not allowed to sign affidavits

> not allowed to hold public office

George Washington believed "Honesty" was the foundation of all success in a society from private individuals to organizations to governments and he was strongly against those who did NOT want this in the U.S. Constitution.

* George Washington warned Americans in his Farewell Address - again - that "Honesty is always the best policy";

* George Washington also warned Americans in his Farewell Address - again - about the necessity of Religious foundation for all public oaths:

"Let it simply be asked:

Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice?

Apart from this great omission - which George Washington always believed was great error - he still believed two great truths about the U.S. Constitution, especially after the Bill of Rights was ratified:

> God had providentially overseen the construction of the U.S. Constitution,

> Thus being the work of Providence, the U.S. Constitution became a "Sacred Document".
