George Washington personally "changed" how he dated his official papers, and advocated that the USA date official documents, in the following manner:

George Washington, in his First Administration “Thanksgiving Proclamation” dated it October 3, in the “Year of our Lord”.

However:

George Washington, in his Second Administration, dated his “Thanksgiving Proclamation” to the “Year of Independence of the USA"
