Many of us think of George Washington the brave Soldier-Commander-in-Chief at Valley Forge; the good-honest-&-fair-but-reluctant president, not grasping for dictatorial power like his peers: Napoleon, King George-III & Simon Bolivar.
We romanticize those days when politicians were neither sharp nor shrewd, when few were greedy and grasping for power, when none would seek dishonest gain, fraudulently get wealth, lie, deceive, manipulate, steal, kill, and destroy enemies with lies or guns.
Thus we miss the fact that Washington was an absolute Master at the Psychology of Perception, Popularity and Politics - making ‘Slick Willie’ & ‘Teflon Ron’ seem like ‘Bubba & Bonzo’!
Don't ever underestimate the wealth, greed-&-glory seeking, the revenge, jealousy & hatred of human nature!
From Cain killing Abel, to Abraham having his wife say she was his sister - twice - teaching his son Isaac to do the same, to Lot at Sodom, to Jacob deceiving his brother, lying to his father and manipulating his semi-father-in-law Laban; to Joseph's games with his brothers;
To Aaron's quick turn to make the Golden Calf assuming Moses Leadership, to Moses temper of murdering the Egyptian to beating the Rock-that-was-Christ, to using Rahab the Harlot & her lies to conquer a city, to Ehud, and Jephthah and Samson & Jehu;
To King Saul's lies and deceit to kill David, to David's willingness to kill the husband of Abigail and taking her to be his wife immediately, to adultery with Bathsheba and cold-hearted-murder of Urriah her husband & his own faithful soldier;
The Bible is full of the deceit & treachery of human nature and the depth of sin of the human heart cannot be exhausted, Jeremiah said in 17.9 - consider that Judas betrayed Jesus for the price of a slave.
In fact Jesus warns us to be as "SHREWD as SERPENTS" as brother would betray brother, parents the children and children the parents when Christian dedication is involved.
If you think the 'Political Scene' was much, much better from 1770 to 1800 than today, you are completely wrong!
In fact, some things are better today, because liars get caught more easily, thanks to email records, cameras, videos including phones, secret tape-recorders, bugged offices, telephones & phone tapping, Internet records of many things; with thousands of research reporters probing every person of power & celebrity and every one with secret knowledge being able to "sell" their story, with dishonesty & betrayal a way of life.
If you don't remember the lies, the literal fights, the newspaper fights, the duels-to-death, etc., read of Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Silas Dean, Ben Franklin, and the hatred of Thomas Jefferson, James Hamilton, John Adams, Andrew Jackson and even Abraham Lincoln;
In one of the most chaotic environments ever known, the amazing, near-miraculous, unbelievable "Hero Worship", near idolatry, and incredible praise, honor, and admiration heaped upon George Washington defies credulity.
Washington’s mastery of psychological principles of persuasion, influence, perception, manipulation, politics & leadership - of whom the world has yet to see his equal before or since - devoting his whole life to one thing: his reputation.
Not even Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, Disciple John, or Mary the Holy Virgin were so well spoken of, beloved, admired and/or as accepted as George Washington.
[If you doubt this, take a look at what other world leaders - his peers - said about him, and see if you can find his equal anywhere in the world - ever - send us the evidence we'll send you back the award: a $10,000 wager says you can't find anyone to equal the praise of George Washington.
Washington Developed the “Formula to Lead" without making Enemies
Read what just a few World leaders, peers and following US Presidents said of Washington. "Never did nature and fortune combine more perfectly to make a man great, and to place him in the same constellation with whatever worthies have merited from man an everlasting remembrance."
Thomas Jefferson, himself one of the greatest men ever, whom Washington twice-defeated for President!
“. . . Greatest Man in the World!“
King George III, of the United Kingdom - hated war enemy upon hearing of Washington's plan to retire as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army (1783), surrendering his power to Congress voluntarily.
“Posterity will talk of Washington as the 'Founder of a Great Empire', when my name shall be lost in the vortex of revolution."
Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon I of France)
“The Great Citizen, the First-Born Son of the New World.”
Simón Bolívar
“The Cincinnatus of the West.”
Lord Byron
"You have in American history one of the Great Captains of all times."
Von Moltke, Berlin, Germany
"He is polite with dignity, affable without formality, distant without haughtiness, grave without austerity; modest, wise and good."
Abigail Adams, wife of the man whom Washington defeated TWICE for President! (in a letter to John Adams, 1789)
"One of the Greatest Captains of the Age!"
Benjamin Franklin, world famous scientist, renowned statesmen, US Ambassador to France, American Founding Father, Author, Printer, Philosopher.
“Eternity alone can reveal to the human race its debt of gratitude to the peerless and immortal name of Washington."
James A. Garfield, US President
“He was, indeed, in every sense of the words, a wise, a good, and a great man.”
Thomas Jefferson
Washington's is the mightiest name of earth — long since mightiest in the cause of civil liberty; still mightiest in moral reformation."
"On that name no eulogy is expected. It cannot be."
"To add brightness to the sun, or glory to the name of Washington, is alike impossible. Let none attempt it."
"In solemn awe pronounce the name, and in its naked deathless splendor leave it shining on."
the above by Abraham Lincoln, 16th US President
There are many more:
We challenge you to find anyone who led a nation for nearly 25 years, who so maintained the good-will of all factions - even those whom he defeated!
This is impressive to the extreme, as we see in Lincoln’s words above; who himself was a world acclaimed leader - but who was concurrently HATED & DESPISED by many of his peers and enemies!
Washington's universal admiration is worthy of recognition, consideration, and commentary indeed! He is still among the most admired of all Americans, often considered our greatest President, still considered the Greatest Mason, and these are nearly 250 years after he lived his life!
Thus historians are dazzled and baffled by this Machiavellian Master just as were his World competitors, his American competitors, his peers, his fellow citizens, his soldiers, his Lodge Members, his historians and his fans & followers for centuries now!
At the same time his peers with whom he served 30 years were developing great legions of enemies who called for their death in some cases, from Thomas Paine, to Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, John and Samuel Adams, Hamilton & Burr, Silas dean and Ben Franklin, etc.
His accomplishments through “People Skills” were overwhelming.Washington was 'Billy Graham' for Goodness, 'Elvis' for Star-Power, 'Michael Jordan' for getting the job done, 'J. F. Kennedy' for class, 'Nixon' for shrewd as a serpent, 'Obama' for Promise and Hope, and 'Rock Hudson' for deceit: COMBINED!
What were his most Shrewd Secrets of Great Popularity?
,Br>NOTE: Billy Graham, as much as anyone in the 20th century, approached George Washington's ideal of popularity - except for Christianity - and thusly has been voted the most admired man many times over the last 40 years. Joel Osteen is picking up the mantle, think of these two along the way, and see that this is how they operate.
Washington's Shrewd Rules for Popularity
According to George Washington, the most popular 25-year leader of a nation in the history of the world - one achieves great popularity by doing as follows:
[1] Realize as early as possible in life, that your reputation - what people THINK you are - is most important thing in your life!
Importance of reputation exceeds your education, beliefs, innate abilities, born talents & cultivated skills; as well as your willingness to work hard, lead, sacrifice, give, etc.
QUOTE: "George Washington’s MAJOR GOAL IN LIFE was to fabricate-cultivate-&-elevate a reputation-of-renown: of aristocracy & superiority, of breeding & blue-blood, of erudition & education, of culture & refinement, and of decency & dedication, which reputation he protected above all things." [1]
> Thus Pay your bills
> > Rarely give your word, but if you do, keep it.
> > > Promote praise & recognition of your assumed greatness, but publicly, be modest and state how it really wasn't you: just keep the praise going: just keep saying, you would've done the same thing, wouldn't you?
** Thus you are praising the person praising you, and the more greatly the person praises you, the more you heap praise back upon them: it is a self-perpetuating mutual admiration society EXCEPT, you are being praised for some supposed deed, while you are only attributing to them INTENTIONS!
** Thus they gain by praising you more, and you always win best!
[2] Take no position and advocate no cause that does not already enjoy true, overwhelming popularity.
**Simply change all beliefs, styles opinions and values to whatever is popular - in priority as well as quality & quantity.
** If you cannot change all beliefs, hide your true beliefs on important issues, and never let them be known.
> Say what listeners want to hear, privately & publicly,
> > Never give an opinion when you have NOTHING to gain!
> > > Never give an opinion when you have SOMETHING to lose!
[3] Diligently practice deceit, guile, lying, & manipulation facts according to what is required to be popular and accepted by all.
**It's not really a sin in this manner because you gaining personal power to use for the good of all: God understands and approves.
**Washington, in cultivating his opinion of great goodness, found it important to convince himself that he was good, thus he looked for a way to "Justify every sin: Regardless!"
> Say as LITTLE as possible on EVERY issue of importance!
> > Take NO sides on ANY serious feud or division!
> > > Take NO position on ANY issue of serious controversy!
[4] When asked about controversial matters point-blank - in public or private - PLEAD indecision, ambiguity & ambivalence; applaud the issue & ‘how complex it is!’
** Tell them how smart they are, and how much you'd value their opinion. Thus you learn what they think and know what to say and what not tom say around them.
** Declare boldly how you can see both sides, and that as a ‘wise, intelligent person of intellectual depth & deep reasoning, you are committed to studying this great issue.'
> Thus you pick up points for modesty by admitting you don't have all answers as a 'know it all', . . .
> > More points for looking at issues long & hard & not making rash decisions, . . .
> > > More points for being a deep-thinker and caring about getting important and complex issues right! Thus ‘hiding true thoughts behind self-deprecating INDECISION' . . . becomes a 'win-win--win-situation' - IF you just don't take sides!
[5] George Washington taught the importance of 'Never speaking ill of ANYONE with influence, regardless what they believe, say, or do.' [It seems he may have learned this from Ben Franklin].
> Always be forgiving,
> > Always be understanding
> > > Always offer mercy and future confidence in them, even if you don't trust them at all.
** Do not criticize the High & Mighty!
** Do not find fault with or blame the High & Mighty!
** do not indulge in gossip - true or false - about the High & Mighty!
[6] Never EMBARRASS anyone EVER, not even in private: always allow them to maintain ego & self-respect.
> Never ARGUE, & never make a scene: EVER!
> > Ignore direct confrontation, AVOID contradiction,
> > > If you sense something developing, just leave tense situations.
[7] Washington learned from Ben Franklin to "speak all the good you know about every body, as well as to their face."
> Simply start praising a person as soon as you are in their presence and don't stop until they stop you.
> > Most people love to hear the sound of their own name, and never tire of being praised.
> > > Remember, "Old Ben" was just a couple of steps behind George in popularity, though it was much easier for him, as Washington was a Military General fighting a 9-year war, later presided over the Constitutional Convention, served 8-years as U.S. President, and was a 25 years a leader of the Masonic Lodge.
Washington had many opportunities to make enemies, and apart from his own Mother & family, he was universally admired
[Truthfully, he was loved by everyone EXCEPT those who truly knew him!]
[8] Washington insisted on making very few friends, and taking no one into your confidence until well proven over the years.
> Be a 'party type people person'
> > Eat out often, and entertain often
> > > Let the food and music do most of the entertaining, let your words be few unless you are praising the guests
[NOTE: Washington was extremely wealthy, so spreading a lavish table often was a simple matter for him.
[9] Washington says: "Be a peacemaker!" [so did Jesus & said such would be blessed!] Help disagreeing power-brokers find middle ground. This was perhaps his forte in some ways
> Do not speak your own opinions,
> > Speak of the greatness and intellect of both of them.
> > > Insist they are both right, and that under different circumstances either of their exclusive positions would be the correct one, but that in this position, it seems the middle course is the answer.
** Allow them to work out differences if they can.
** Anything you are forced to do for the good of the cause: be as perfectly fair as is humanly possible: even if you HATE the position you are forced to take.
** NEVER favor one over another: regardless if you love one and hate the other, "IF" both are important to what you are trying to achieve.
[10] Washington says: "Look as good as you can!" Washington was immaculate & stylish! He was NEVER under-dressed.
**He used props, like his shining sword; his horse and saddle, always the biggest & best, his riding boots polished to mirror likeness.
** He wore white riding breeches, clean and tightly fitted.
> His hair was long and curled.
> > When his hair turning gray & thinning, he powdered it for thickness a color.
> > > He kept a ready supply of wigs for emergencies, when time didn't allow curling, powdering, etc., and wore wigs all of the time when his hair was mostly gone.
[11] Washington insisted one not be rude & crude, never using language that might offend. None ever heard him use profanity.
> He was always polite
> > He was always a gentleman
> > > He treated all with respect, even those who did not deserve it.
[12] Washington was very "Politically Correct". He was not bigoted against women, even saying god might be a "she!"
> He accepted all foreigners [except Native American tribes]
> > He accepted all religions, and treated them as equal
> > > He accepted all nationalities and treated them as equals
[13] George Washington was a Great Believer in the "Token Symbolism": He went to all Churches, now & then.
> He gave to all worthy causes - as little as possible!
> > He advocated every good cause - as seldom as was needed!
> > > He stood with every regular citizen and working person - but only when and because he had to.
** What ever it takes to keep the reputation.
** Whatever it takes to correct and false image.
[14] George Washington was a "True Believer - IN HIM SELF!" NOT so much his abilities & intellect, but in his Destiny. He truly believed he was chosen to do, be, and achieve greatness, to be admired and praised by many.
** Thus where many great leaders are very uncomfortable in the presence of cheering masses, Washington was 'right at home and received it as if he were Christ!'
** Because he received adulation & admiration well, it seemed to add fuel to the fire.
> He knew how to dress,
> > He knew how to bow & wave to the cheering fans,
> > > He knew how to smile and show great pleasure at their praise: He ws in his element, which enhanced it all the more!
[15] Because George Washington was a "True Believer - IN HIS DESTINY!" . . . he never complained when things were hard, or even when everything went wrong.
When everything went wrong he assumed one of the following:
> He had done something to offend the "Deity" thus he deserved the trials & tribulation,
> > Therefore he would take the difficulties with a great attitude - never complaining or being negative!
"OR"
> > > It was simply a "test by the Deity" to see if he were ready to be promoted to bigger and better things!
> > > > Therefore he would take the difficulties with a great attitude - never complaining or being negative!
Where Washington developed this "Stoic Philosophy" is not known with certainty, but it made him seem truly great to NEVER complain or NEVER be negative about the difficulties in achieving a cause! These added to his popularity!
[16] When in doubt - BE QUIET! Amazingly, Washington the adult was so closed mouth on all things important that his most famous quotes are NOT strong statements on slavery, the Constitution, democracy, Bill of Rights, theology, science, or the issues of his day . . .
. . . but rather simple things, many he said as a boy, such as
“Fine feathers don’t always make a fine bird!’
"Honesty is the best policy, I always say" (but never do - especially when trying to deceive!)
CONVERSELY, consider his peer of 30 years: Thomas Jefferson spoke & wrote on many subjects, clear & convincingly: thus he was hated by many with great enemies & detractors. Likewise Madison, and Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was one of the most hated persons of his time, and one of the most despised of all presidents while in office.
Washington was a Grand Master at these techniques! He made ‘Slick Willie’ seem like ‘Slow Joe’ Even Jefferson, who was quite a master himself with logic, reason, and all things linguistic called Washington “The OLD FOX”!
One modern researcher said of Washington:
"Washington is American history's grand exemplar of the virtue of civic duty. Say "actor-president" and people think Reagan, but Washington played a role so thoroughly, and so perfectly, that people still think he was that regal, noble Roman hero.
When you read the accounts of him written by his intimate circle during the Revolution, you see the American man -- vain, hard-driving, hard-cussing, clever in a farmer's ways. And you appreciate what he did to get America launched on an even keel: passing up a life he could have spent happily among his horses, transforming himself into a living virtue as a gift to the new nation.
Douglas Harper

And it is possible to look into the details of Washington's biography and see what might have been made of him for a modern America. Washington held himself aloof from his peers, as he felt befitted his role. He endured the familiarity of men who sought to treat him as an equal, but he never returned anything for it. Within the ordered social arrangements, he had few men who could be called friends. Yet one close companion was his able wife, Martha. She was in every sense his adviser and confidante. He married her though his heart was on another woman (Sally Fairfax). Stoic Washington never cost his nation a scandal. It would have been unthinkable.

George Washington's "Quick -List" to "Quick-Popularity"!
George Washington's Maxims for Absolute Popularity
> > STAND for popularity rather than for TRUTH!
> > ADVOCATE popularity rather than that which is RIGHT!
> > Be AGAINST that which is not popular, rather than that which is EVIL!
> > Befriend ALL who are of money, power & influence, REGARDLESS, regardless what they think say or do
> > ALWAYS compromise for PEACE!
> > ALWAYS receive PRAISE and deceive for more
> > ALWAYS be SHREWD for GAIN - whatever it takes!
> > ALWAYS value Reputation above Character, and people in delusion, will eventually consider the False Reputation to be the True Character!
[See Titanic Doctrine for an outrageous truth!
> > Be a MASTER at creating perception, as true REALITY!
George Washington was ALL OF THESE THINGS TO THE EXTREME!
Thus he presided over fighting factions through deciding to form a Continental Congress, then a Continental Army, then secede from England; writing & approving the Declaration of Independence, drafting & approving the Articles of Confederation, fighting a near-10-year Revolutionary War, presiding over casting out the Articles of Confederation, writing, approving & implementing a new US Federalist Constitution, getting elected & presiding as President for 8-years, settling the Whiskey rebellion without a shot, and the Treaty of Tripoli in sorry compromise without American citizens even aware of it . . .
. . . all without making any enemies to speak of - while others were fighting literally, hating, assaulting, cursing, having duels etc., Washington continued to “Accept Praise from them all!"
George Washington’s MAJOR GOAL IN LIFE was to fabricate-cultivate-&-elevate a reputation-of-renown: of aristocracy & superiority, of breeding & blue-blood, of erudition & education, of culture & refinement, and of decency & dedication, which he protected above all things.
He achieved that goal.
