What Happens?

The study of PRO-BIOTICS goes back to the start of the 20th century when Nobel Laureate Eli Metchnikoff studied the health giving effects of fermented milk products. In particular they are beneficial for the elderly, the young, pregnant women and people with weakened immune system.

FACT: "Bio" and "Biotic" mean life;

FACT: "Bio - ology is 'study of life';

FACT: "Anti" means 'against'

FACT: "Anti - Biotic" is "anti-life" - thus antibiotics kill bacteria, etc., and will kill you too, if enough are taken!

FACT: "Pro" means 'for' or to 'promote'

FACT: "Pro - biotics" is to 'promote life'

SUMMARY: Thus the supplements known as Probiotics work to promote life and health.

WISDOM: Probiotics are often recommended following a course of antibiotics in order to restore the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut.


Probiotics are defined by the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization, as live strains of microorganisms that provide health benefits to its host (person taking them) when taken in sufficient amounts.

They are useful in the treatment of diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. You may also use them to prevent yeast infections, to prevent or treat urinary tract infections and to treat eczema.

Probiotics may contain a bacterial or fungal species and may be purchased as a dietary supplement or found in foods such as yogurt and miso.

Another Definition;

Probiotics are live microorganisms, which when ingested, provide health benefits by improving the balance of healthy intestinal flora (microflora) in the gut.

The most common microorganisms used as probiotics are Lactic acid bacteria - the best known being Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterial strains.

Probiotic Benefits

Studies have linked the best probiotics with a wide range of health benefits including:

    * Management of antibiotic associated diarrhea and traveler’s diarrhea.

    * Reducing inflammation in the gut and assisting in the management of inflammatory bowel syndromes.

    * Preventing harmful bacterial growth and associated toxins.

    * Yeast infection treatment by restoring the natural balance of gut microflora thought to keep Candida yeast growth in check.

    Probiotics such as Threelac are often recommended as part of a Candida diet or yeast free diet.

    * Managing lactose intolerance via the action of lactic acid bacteria.

    * Prevention of colon and bowel cancers. It is thought that probiotics may bind with carcinogenic substances or reduce the activity of harmful enzymes.

    * Improving the absorptive capacity of the gut.

    * Some studies link robust probiotic populations with better management of cholesterol levels.

Best Probiotic Supplements:

There is no standardized manufacturing process for probiotic supplements, so their effectiveness varies between products.

Labeling is also poorly regulated with the result that certain foods and supplements, while labeled as ‘probiotic’ may not be providing sufficient quantities of viable bacteria strains to confer any health benefits.

When choosing the best probiotics for your needs, bear in mind the points set out below. If you want a short cut, then head on over to our article on best probiotics where we review 4 top-rated products.

* While probiotics supplements are available in liquid, powder or capsule form, most health professionals recommend purchasing probiotic capsules.

    In particular it is important to make sure the capsule has been specifically designed to withstand stomach acids and pancreatic bile that are harmful to bacteria and pass intact to the gastro intestinal tract.

* Multi-strain probiotics that contain both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, such as Acidophilus Pearls for example, are the most common. These replicate the bacteria found in most healthy diets.

* The concentration of bacteria is measured in colony forming units (CFUs) and will vary from product to product. Studies have shown 1health benefits for products ranging from 30 million to more than 1 trillion CFU/day, but more CFUs does not always mean better quality.

* While technically the term “Acidophilus” or “Acidophilus supplement” describes a single species called Lactobacillus Acidophilus, it has become a generic name for a group of probiotics that may also include other species.

* The best probiotics provide very specific information on the strains provided and how many CFUs per strain. See information provided by Align probiotic for example.

* If a specific health claim is made the manufacturer should provide details of verifiable, independent scientific studies to back these up.

* Products should have an expiration date and the best probiotics supplements use inert packaging, usually glass, that does not allow for any contamination. Note that some products will require refrigeration.

* Look for contact details for the manufacture and avoid products where this is not provided.


Lactobacillus is one of the more common bacteria contained in probiotic supplements. You may find it as a single entity or in combination with other probiotics. There are a variety of strains of this species--Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, acidophilus, reuteri and bulgaricus; all are useful in the treatment of diarrhea.

Some available probiotic supplements containing one or more strains of lactobacillus are Culturelle, RepHresh Pro-B Probiotic Feminine Supplement, and Lactinex.


Bifidobacterium, a bacterial species commonly found in probiotic supplements, also resides in your gut in various forms. Bifidobacterium exists in a variety of strains--infanti, lactis, bifidum, and longum.

Bifidobacterium may be purchased in combination with other probiotic species or as a single entity. It's useful in the treatment of antibiotic-associated, and traveler's diarrhea. Align is a commercially available probiotic supplement that contains bifidobacterium as a single ingredient.

Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is considered a yeast rather than a bacterium, but it is a common probiotic. Used to treat and prevent diarrhea associated with the use of antibiotics and infectious diarrhea caused by rotavirus, Saccharomyces may also treat inflammatory bowel conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It can be found as a single ingredient in the products Florastor and Florastor for kids.

"And from a theoretical point of view," Dr. Chutkan says, "we think that moving substances through the colon quickly is important for good health."

    When patients started asking Dr. Chutkan about a new line of Dannon yogurts called 'Activia', which contain a strain of bifido-bacterium, she did some homework to find out whether that particular probiotic has been studied.

    She found one trial of Activia that split healthy volunteers into two groups.

      > One group ate Activia.

      > The other group ate an inactive form of Activia product with no live bacteria.

    At the end of the study, the volunteers eating the authentic stuff had a 21 percent decrease in colon transit time;

    SUMMARY: In other words, food passed more quickly out of their bodies.

    FURTHERMORE, Dr. Chutkan says this 'may reduce the discomfort of constipation.'

    Fewer Allergies, but for How Long?

    But there has been solid research on probiotics as a medical treatment for irritable bowel, diarrhea, allergy disorders and other bowel disorders. In these studies, doctors have used either Lactobacillus GG, sold under the brand name Culturelle, or a product called VSL-3.

    In a study completed a few years ago, researchers gave Lactobacillus GG to pregnant women with a history of allergies, then to their infants. The babies developed a significantly lower rate of allergic eczema than the control group that did not take probiotics.

"For example, is that effect on allergy long-lived? Or as soon as you stop taking the probiotics does the eczema come back?" Bousvaros asks.

Bousvaros has done his own research, testing probiotics on children with well-managed cases of Crohn's disease. He found that the probiotics did not reduce GI flare-ups. He hopes to do follow-up research on a different population of patients that may benefit more.

"There are many good, quality-controlled trials in the medical literature that suggest probiotics might work," he notes.

Possible Side effects from Probiotics:

    * Probiotic side effects tend to be mild and associated with digestion effects such as gas, abdominal pain or bloating.

    * There is some concern in the scientific community that certain probiotics may cause bacterial infections that need to be treated with antibiotics. This is particularly the case in people with compromised immune systems.

    * Some probiotic strains may also over-stimulate metabolic activity and the immune system causing negative symptoms.

    * People with any kind of food allergy should take care when consuming probiotics and seek medical advice before hand. Allergic reactions may include dizziness, rashes, itchiness or swelling around the face or throat and trouble breathing.

    * Note that other effects, not listed above, may occur. If you notice any side effects seek the advice of a health professional.

Proper Purchasing Guidelines:

NOTE that ALL bacteria families have various levels of naming for EXACT identification:

    [1] Their GENUS; (example: Lactobacillus)

    [2] Their SPECIES; (example: Acidophilus)

    [3] Their STRAIN; (example: LAFTI 10)

    [4] The FULL NAME; (example: Lactobacillus Acidophilus, LAFTI 10)

      Here's why this matters:

      Products should ideally be sold on the "STRAIN LEVEL” linking health benefits supported by clinical studies on that "strain" .

      ***As a general rule, steer clear of products that don’t contain this information.


      o Don’t assume that effects from one strain hold true for others. The blending of different strains may also result in different effects.

      o In other words many of the results of taking pro-biotics are not general effects of probiotics . . .

      o. . . they can only be attributed to a particular strain or blend of probiotics.

      o PubMED and NCCAM offer good resources, guides and sponsored research on probiotics.

      o When reviewing different products refer to the definition of probiotics provided by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics.

      o Avoid manufactures who exaggerate the health benefits of their products. For example the FTC recently ruled that there is not enough evidence to support the claim made by Activia the probiotic infused yogurt drink by Dannon that the produce helps to mange constipation.

      o Some species such as those used for Acidophilus supplements have a long history of use as probiotics without reports of negative symptoms or side effects,

      o Realize that others are newer and less studied.


      [1] The cultures-bacteria MUST be live when administered;

      [2] There MUST be research that show this culture effective;

      [3] The taxonomic name (genus, species, strain) MUST be given;

      [4] The product must be proven safe for human consumption!


    IBS. Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The symptoms are certainly nothing to laugh about…

    * Cramping and Abdominal Pain (many times severe), * * Bloating and Persistent Flatulence, * * Constipation, or its counterpart… * * Frequent Diarrhea

    IBS is far more widespread than you might believe. As many as 20% of the adult population, or one in five people, have or will eventually experience symptoms of IBS, making it one of the most common medically diagnosed disorders.

    Occurring more often in women than in men, it can begin before the age of 35 in about 50% of people.

    What Causes IBS?

    First off, Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn’t caused by stress or anxiety. In fact, the large intestine of IBS sufferers often looks perfectly healthy. But the spasms, the cramps, the embarrassing gas are anything but a sign of health.

    The medical term for IBS is Dysbiosis – meaning a change in the type of intestinal bacteria.

    Our digestive tracts are inhabited by billions of bacteria, with our gut providing the “prime real estate” for them to both grow and thrive.

    There are “good” bacteria (like lactobacillus) and “bad” bacteria (like E. coli and numerous others) taking up residence in our intestines.

    Entering our body immediately after birth, good bacteria act in a symbiotic relationship with us - their human host.

    We give them room and board. In return, the good bacteria helps us with metabolism and digestion. Vitamin K and biotin production, in particular, are accomplished by beneficial gut bacteria.

    The Balance of Power

    As you just read, your gut provides a paradise environment for bacteria (both good & bad) to live in. But your “good” bacteria are pretty territorial and fight off unwanted neighbors.

    However, our modern day way of living is stacking the deck against good intestinal health…

    * Antibiotics * * Steroids * * Birth control pills * * Synthetic hormones * * Bad diets * * Poor nutrition * * Environmental toxins

    These are just a sampling of what can kill off the good bacteria, inhibit your body’s ability to fight off bad bacteria or just plain provide an overwhelming feeding frenzy for the bad guys to set up shop.


    When bad bacteria start getting the upper hand in your intestinal tract, yeast often moves in and takes up residence as well. This shift in your gut causes problems and is the essence of dysbiosis, an altered balance of power in the continuous war zone of your intestines.

    Once the good bacteria have been supplanted by yeast or bad bacteria in sufficient numbers, your health begins to suffer.

    Yeast – A Slow Assassin

    Yeast can produce toxins that enter your blood stream and quite literally poison you slowly over the decades. Or yeast infections can suddenly flare up in other places in your body – like your sinuses, ear canals, toe nails and vagina.

    Living off excess sugar in your diet that passes down to the large intestine, yeast in the gut can cause IBS all on its own

    How Much Is Excess Sugar To Blame?

    Consider this:

    * In 1900 the average consumption of sugar per person in the USA was about 5 lbs. per year. * * In 1980 it was 26 lbs. per year. * * Today it’s nearly 135 lbs per person, each year!

    All this sugar is a direct contributor to over 45 major health issues, including IBS.

    (Did you know that in a 20 ounce bottle of regular carbonated soft drink, there are over 15 teaspoons of sugar, and in a “small” 12 oz. can there are over 9 teaspoons of sugar? That’s for each and every bottle & can of pop you drink. Ouch!)

    Excess sugar is a seventh heaven for yeast cells. Just like in fermentation, yeast-sugar metabolism produces gas – mainly carbon dioxide (CO2).

    Carbon dioxide is both colorless & odorless. When the yeast in your gut manufactures enough carbon dioxide it causes bloating, cramping and… intestinal gas!

    How do you know if your IBS is mainly from yeast? If your flatus is mainly non-odorous, then it’s largely carbon dioxide.

    Rule of Thumb: If your “wind” doesn’t smell, you have a yeast problem.

    Bad Bacteria

    Harmful gut bacteria can cause acute illnesses such as dysentery, food poisoning or traveler’s diarrhea. More often, they cause localized inflammation of the bowel wall, setting the stage for eventual Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis.

    Antibiotics – Indiscriminate Killers

    Used properly, antibiotics can and do save countless lives. But like with most everything else on this planet, there are trade-offs. Antibiotics attack all bacteria – both good and bad. One antibiotic – one pill – can be sufficient enough to cause IBS.

    But what if you never take antibiotics?

    Doesn’t matter – because your digestive tract is under constant assault from toxins and bad diets. Plus, don’t forget the food supply has hidden antibiotics, hormones and poisons directly affecting your gut and bacterial flora. Our environment is unfortunately painfully polluted with all sort of harmful residues.

    Probiotics - Combating Bacterial IBS The Natural Way

    The last thing you want to take in relieving your IBS symptoms are antibiotics. Yet amazingly, some physicians prescribe exactly this counter-productive treatment!

    Probiotics - One Piece Of The IBS Puzzle.

    Probiotics are good bacteria packaged in large quantities and taken as a nutritional supplement, which go a long way helping to restore the beneficial flora in your gut.

    Some good bacteria are found in food items like yogurt and kefir, but their quantities are nearly negligible.

    However, one probiotic capsule (such as Primal Defense) is the equivalent of about 10,000 cups of yogurt!

    I would highly recommend anyone with IBS to immediately start supplementing with probiotics. In fact, it would be a wonderful idea to add probiotics to your nutritional regimen in any event – if only for keeping your intestinal tract healthy as possible.

    But restoring the balance of healthy bacteria is only part of the equation for treating IBS. Yeast is also a culprit – one which I personally believe is the case for most IBS sufferers.

    My professional opinion is that anti-yeast tactics are absolutely necessary for effectively treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

    Controlling Yeast Infections

    First you’ll have to convince your doctor that yeast infections can be the cause of your IBS. Then you have to convince him or her to prescribe some heavy-duty anti-yeast artillery:

    * Nystatin is a an excellent anti-yeast killer. Unfortunately it’s only available as a prescription product in the United States. One of the advantages of Nystatin is that it only kills yeast in the gut, and not taken up and absorbed anywhere else.

    Depending upon the severity of your infection, you may need to take Nystatin for several months, and then periodically after that for flare ups. * * Ketoconazole (again a prescription drug) is a systemic anti-fungal (anti-yeast) antibiotic. It inhibits yeast everywhere in the body, including the vagina, sinuses and ear canals. Many women are familiar with these medications (Diflucan) for treating their vaginal yeast infections. * * Nizoral is a cousin to Diflucan and much less expensive. However, to be effective, all these medications need to be taken for weeks or even months.

    Digestive Enzymes – No Prescription Needed

    Thankfully there are ways for controlling your yeast infections without the need for prescription drugs. You just read about probiotics. But there’s another method that can work wonders, especially for yeast infections… digestive enzymes.

    Your natural digestive enzymes are found in your salivary glands (saliva), stomach, pancreas and intestines. Each has a specific task in breaking down food for proper digestion.

    As we age, the amount of digestive enzymes in our body starts to decrease. That’s why as teenagers we can have a “iron stomach” and eat almost anything, but as the years progress we get more and more sensitive to what we ingest.

    All digestive enzymes are helpful, but those that digest sugars are particularly beneficial for combating your IBS symptoms. Anything that reduces the flow of undigested sugar feeding the yeast is good. If sugars are digested in the small intestine and don’t pass through into the large intestine, this is the equivalent of starving the yeast to death!

    Low sugar diets help for the same reasons that digestive enzymes do. Starving the yeasts.

    High Fructose Corn Syrup

    The Killer Lurking In Our Food

    Next time you go food shopping, take a look at the nutritional labels on anything canned, bottled or boxed. It’s a good chance you’ll find high fructose corn syrup as one the main (if not the top) ingredients.

    This sugar is being added to almost everything, and is a huge contributor to our national ill-health epidemic. Why is high fructose corn syrup finding its way into so much of what we eat?

    Corn is government subsidized – and the syrup is cheap. It’s an easy way to make food taste good while saving money for the producer. How do you think we’ve increased our sugar intake by over 4 times in just 30 years? It was by this stealth adulteration of the food supply.

    Unfortunately it’s now wreaking havoc with our bodies.

    IBS - The Long Term Consequences

    IBS is not a joke. It may start out as an uncomfortable condition with gas pains and flatus, but left unchecked, it leads to Leaky Gut Syndrome, and various toxic syndromes associated with yeast infestation.

    Leaky Gut Syndrome is probably the first step towards the production of auto-antibodies and chronic inflammatory diseases ranging from:

    * Lupus, * * Rheumatoid Arthritis, * * Fibromyalgia, * * Heart Diseases, * * Diabetes and * * Certain Cancers

    IBS is also the forerunner of truly awful inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. No doubt it’s the pre-disposer towards polyps and colon cancer, as well.

    Your gut is probably one of the most important organs in your body. Your entire body depends on the food it gets and how it’s digested. Your lifetime of health or chronic disease hangs in the balance at this point in the digestive process.

    IBS – A Serious Warning Signal

    IBS is just a symptom of your digestive process going wrong. Think of it as an early warning sign of impending bad things to come. This is why IBS is associated so heavily with the other chronic diseases mentioned above.

    If you are living anything near a modern lifestyle, then it’s more than likely your intestinal tract could use some powerful help, even if you aren’t experiencing the overt signs of clinical IBS.

    Digestive enzymes and Primal Defense probiotics can go a long way in helping you maintain your health and reversing years of nutritional neglect and environmental poisoning.
