In a state dominated by the same party – and in many cases the same people – virtually since its inception, Sarah Palin is at the vanguard of a new generation of Alaska Republicans with a reformist bent.

The self-described "hockey mom" ousted the incumbent governor in the 2006 primary, and she is both the youngest person and the first woman to serve in the post in Alaska.

Senator John McCain, the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican Party, drafted her as his running mate on Aug. 29, 2008.

After overseeing significant increases in both population and spending as mayor of her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, Sarah Palin started accusing high-ranking members of her own party of ethical lapses, leading to some resignations.

Finally, in 2006, she took on Gov. Frank H. Murkowski. Running on her usual message of a "new face," Sarah Palin beat the incumbent governor in the G.O.P. primary. Her outsider status helped her buck a national trend of Democratic victories in the general election.

Since taking office, Ms. Sarah Palin has raised taxes on oil companies' revenue from the state – seen as a risky move by some observers – and crafted a deal with a Canadian firm to potentially build a long-sought natural gas pipeline.

With five children, Sarah Palin's family is a central part of her public persona.

> Her oldest son, Track, is in the Army and slated for deployment to Iraq,

> her youngest, Trig Paxson Van, has Down syndrome.

> A few days after joining the McCain ticket, she and her husband, Todd, also disclosed that their teenage daughter was five months pregnant. They said Bristol would keep the baby and marry the father.

Sarah Palin, a former local beauty queen born in Idaho and raised in Alaska, has attracted monikers ranging from "Sarah Barracuda" (for her adversarial style) to "Saint Sarah."

From her support for gun rights and oil drilling to her opposition to abortion, Sarah Palin is popular with conservatives.

[2] Sarah Palin Rises in National Promise!"

The people of Alaska boast that they have the coldest state in the U.S. and "the hottest governor."

Sarah Palin is the Republican Party's "New Star!"

In her younger days, Sarah Palin did come in second in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant but that's not the point.

Republican John McCain named her just one week ago as his surprise pick for the vice presidency. This week, she was the star of the Republican National Convention and became the most talked-about person in America.

They are right in Alaska; she is a hot commodity, though the Republicans may yet get burned.

Most Americans have only started getting their first glimpse of Palin, but some of her appeal is obvious. She is a compelling public speaker: strong, sentimental and sarcastic.

Her speech to the convention showed her range and persuasive power. She communicated warmth, wit and maternal pride in her family, but then switched to fierce partisanship and a caustic critique of her Democratic opponents. She's good.

And she buries every stereotype in the snow. She hunts moose and eats what she kills. She's a crusader against corruption who's taken on powerful (male) politicians and prevailed. Polls suggest she may be the most popular governor in the country.

Sarah Palin also manages the state while raising five children. (She gave birth to her youngest less than five months ago, reportedly returning to work with her newborn in tow just days later).

Her 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy notwithstanding, she doesn't want public schools to teach about birth control. But she would like them to discuss 'Creationist' alternatives to the Theory of Evolution.

Sarah Palin opposes abortion in all cases, even to end a pregnancy that's the result of rape.

Lawmakers in Alaska have also launched an investigation into whether Sarah Palin misused her authority, allegedly trying to get her sister's estranged husband fired from his job as a police officer.

But opponents say Palin's biggest potential problem may be that her government experience consists only of being the mayor of a tiny remote town, and then the governor of a sparsely populated, remote state.

At the same time, Sarah Palin is already delivering an important demographic for the McCain campaign. As a centrist in his party, McCain was openly opposed by some of its most stalwart and active supporters: Christian conservatives.

Now that Sarah Palin is on his side, some of their leaders have announced that they are too.

She could deliver women, diminishing the 'gender gap' that tends to give a majority of men's votes to the Republicans, and women to the Democrats. Hillary Clinton got 18 million votes in the primaries and the Republicans are hungry for them.

And finally Sarah Palin reinforces McCain reputation as a Washington outsider. He is in fact a familiar face in the politics of the US capital, but she comes as far away as anyone on the continent can.

We'll see. Her appearance at the Republican convention this week was a complete, standing-ovation success.

John McCain has been eclipsed so far in this campaign by the excitement about two candidates he campaigned against: Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

[3] Sarah Palin's New Feminism: Conservative Christian Women"

[1] Susie Baron is a Buckeye Republican, a mother of two and a home-schooler from rural Lebanon, Ohio. She voted for Mike Huckabee in the Ohio primary, but now -- because of Sarah Palin -- she thinks she is part of something much bigger.

[2] "I wouldn't even call it a Palin movement, I'd call it a sleeping giant that has been awakened," Baron, 56, said at a rally here Tuesday.

She described its members as a silent majority of women in Middle America who "are raising our families, who work if we have to, but love our country and our families first."

[3] "And until now, we haven't had anyone to identify with," Baron said, adding that "traditional feminist groups such as the National Organization for Women do not represent me."

[4] Since her rapid transition from obscure Alaska governor to GOP vice presidential nominee, Palin has reenergized the presidential race and also further polarized it, setting her instant fan base, which sees her as a pit bull with lipstick, [ MEDIA SLAM! ] against those who dismiss her as just another Republican who happens to be a woman and seems intent on rekindling a culture war.

[5] The crowd that came to see her here Tuesday showed that Palin's support is rooted in conservative women such as Baron, with the addition of some independents and even Democrats -- women who are "fed up with a man's world," as one rally attendee said, and in some cases dispirited by the treatment of Palin and of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primary race.

[6] [ MEDIA SLAM! ] On the campaign trail, Palin has read the same remarks at each stop from notes or a teleprompter. She has answered no questions, except from People magazine, although she will give her first sit-down interview, to ABC News, this week.

But her mere presence has been enough to generate huge enthusiasm.

[7] The McCain and Obama campaigns are rushing to assess what the Palin force will represent. If it is a small but energized group of Republican women, it could have only marginal impact; if it is more, it could tip the balance of the campaign.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that Palin has also mobilized liberal women.

[8] "There's no doubt she has helped solidify and energize the right wing of his party," senior Obama adviser Anita Dunn said of Palin and McCain, while acknowledging that Palin has drawn the curiosity of people "who are not movement conservatives."

[9] "She's new, and a good performer of that speech that she reads, but that doesn't necessarily translate into votes eight weeks from now," Dunn said. "Obviously, people are going to be interested, because she's new, [ MEDIA SLAM! ] but the more you learned about her, the more you see she's like any other politician, male or female."

10] Other Obama advisers said that [ MEDIA SLAM! ] once women across the board begin considering Palin's stands on social issues such as human embryonic stem cell research and legalized abortion -- she opposes both -- their interest will fade.

That was a line of attack used by Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice presidential candidate, when he was asked Tuesday whether Palin's election would mean a step forward for women.

"Look, I think the issue is: What does Sarah Palin think? What does she believe? [ MEDIA SLAM! ] I assume she thinks and agrees with the same policies that George Bush and John McCain think," Biden said. "And that's obviously a backward step for women."

[11] The Republican National Committee responded by calling Biden's remarks "appalling and arrogant" and saying they are "better suited for the backrooms of his old boys' club."

[12] "Sarah Palin's nomination as the Republican vice presidential nominee is a historic opportunity to break the highest glass ceiling," RNC spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson said.

[13] Several senior officials in both parties said they think Palin's attraction is the result, in part, of a generally negative mood among some female voters this year, first, as Clinton faced a "boys' club" mentality in the Democratic primaries and then as Palin faced intense questioning, much of it highly personal, after McCain named her as his running mate.

[14] To Republicans, Palin's burst onto the national scene could be a chance to redefine the nature of feminism in politics, recasting it beyond traditionally liberal issues such as abortion rights.

"I hope so, because I think it's been unfortunate that it's been so closely pegged, so closely defined, to just a few issues," said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).

[15] Murkowski, whose father lost to Palin in a 2006 gubernatorial primary, said Palin represented a "generational shift" for voters in her state, something that will bode well for her ability to appeal to younger female voters.

[16] While Democrats reject the notion that Palin will somehow transform gender politics once her views are known, a few acknowledged that they have had little success in trying to define her. "I think there may be some hand-holding, but nobody's gone on a date yet," said Sen. Claire McCaskill (Mo.), a prominent Obama supporter who predicted that female voters will eventually return to his camp.

[17] Sen. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) said the issues that matter to female voters, not Palin's sudden rise to the national stage, will determine their votes in November, but she said the Democrats need to explain those policy differences. "I think it's our job to show the truth. They are more focused on an agenda than a gender," Klobuchar said.

[18] After just a week, Palin is as popular as either Obama or McCain. White women in particular express favorable views of the Alaska governor, according to a newly released Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Positive ratings of her spike to 80 percent among white women with children at home and among white women who are evangelical Protestants.

[19] The percentage of white women with "strongly favorable" opinions of McCain jumped 12 percentage points from before the parties' national conventions.

And nearly six in 10 white women in the new poll said McCain's selection of Palin increased their confidence in the decisions he would make if elected.

In the Post-ABC poll, it is white women who helped McCain erase Obama's late-August advantage and seriously cut into the Democratic nominee's lead as the one who would bring more needed change to Washington.

[20] Republican adviser Juleanna R. Glover calls Palin "the future of the GOP," and that was certainly the consensus at this stop in Ohio on Tuesday. McCain and Palin performed a ritual of Republican politics, speaking from a stage in front of the Golden Lamb Hotel, billed as Ohio's oldest inn.

More than 5,000 guests filled the streets, packing it as fully as it had been four years earlier, when President Bush made the same stop.

[21] But this event was more reminiscent of the Clinton campaign earlier this year: Mothers held their young daughters on their shoulders to catch a glimpse of Palin.

Women held up pro-Palin signs and wore "I Love Sarah" stickers. One sign read "Working Mom 4 Palin." Another: "Strike Oil with Sarah."

And another: "Outspoken Conservative Moms for Palin."

Like other women in the crowd, Baron, the home-schooler from Maineville, Ohio, expressed frustration that feminism and women's issues have seemingly been owned by Democrats whose values she does not share.

Julia Burns, 72, a Republican from Lebanon, cut in: "Men had better jump back. Women are going to take over. We're sick and tired of playing by men's rules. We're coming out of the ground, and they had better move out of the way."

Washington Post Staff writer Paul Kane and polling director Jon Cohen contributed to this report.

[4] "IMPALIN’ — Stop Sarah Palin for President in 2012!"

In Sarah Palin’s interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren this evening, she referred to bloggers as “kids in pajamas sitting in the basement of their parents’ homes” spewing out mean and inaccurate things about her.

Well, I am no kid, I am definitely not wearing pajamas and I am living in my own house, thank you! And I am seriously depressed about the prospect of this person having a political future.

In the course of the interview with Greta Van Susteren, a softball thrown with great affection by Fox, Sarah Palin manages to rebut all the attacks on her without ever providing much, if any, facts to support her position.

Sarah Palin - She never asked for the clothes or the stylists. They just appeared. Nor the clothes for her “eight” member family (eight? I thought she had 5 kids…).

Sarah Palin - She never thought Africa was a country . She was just concerned about Darfur and they discussed “Africa there…the country and the continent”.

Sarah Palin - She always knew what countries were in NAFTA.

Sarah Palin - She never thought the crowds were there because of her, it was just because of what she stood or — just a mom trying to change things.

“Impalin’ Palin editor - Pardon me, but I am nearly nauseous by now. There is no acknowledgement by Sarah Palin that she might not have been ready for this job . That there were things she did not know and should have known. That the media intensity revealed her weaknesses — only that it was mean and unfair.

She deftly avoided the question about 2012, but in a very frightening way to those of us who do not believe God tells what doors to open, she explained that God would reveal to her if she should run.

God would tell her if there was a door open with a tiny crack, and she would, “by god”, just push through it.

She is also a feminist in the sense of ” Feminists for life “, which for those of us who believe in the power of women, is not exactly our definition. I actually think she believes women should earn as much as men. But she does not believe government should help women and their families with children, especially special needs children, with any particular programs. Individuals and their communities should do that.

Well — Governor Palin? They do not.

And when they do not, why are you in favor of punishing those families when they find they can’t make it. They can’t support the 24 hour needs of those children without some support. Are they supposed to go out on the street corner and put out a sign that says, “Please feed my special needs child?”

[ MEDIA SLAM! All of the following is untrue. Palin‘s staff with Mc Cain said she was the most unassuming, easiest-to-get-along with person they had ever been around, who never asked for anything more than a Diet Dr. Pepper. Remember, she did win “Miss Congeniality of Alaska, as voted by all contestants!” Yet she is criticizes below as if she is some Hollywood-rock star so rude & belligerent! NOT TRUE!]

Oh my. We are in for a set of charming interviews over the next few days. The only losers will be the Republican party of “meanies” who have attacked Palin. No one is going to challenge her.

[ MEDIA SLAM! No one is going to ask her to be accountable for the leaks from the campaign about her diva personality, her tirades against her staff, her acceptance of all those clothes and makeup and hairdressing, her lack of knowledge of basic facts about American government or foreign affairs.

She can just deny it all, smile, wink and we are all ok with it. Are we?
